So while we all keep hitting the refresh button waiting for info on the offense...I’d hate to think the defense is a finished product. There is always room for improvement.

What would you fellas like to see improved/coached better/changed on D?

Two that come to mind for me are:
1. While our safety play was obviously good, I still see them taking bad angles too often and it makes me crazy

2. Our lb play. I’d like them to be more consistent. I’m glad all 3 came back and they all have things to work on

To expound on Safety play, really concerned about Carter and Hall. Both seem to favor the big hit over wrapping up and making the tackle.

Not a "play" issue but equally concerned at DT. Without Willis, and D looks nothing like it did. Nesta looks like he'll be a beast but he's not there yet.

That’s my issue with Pinckney. Always seems to try and make a highlight reel hit instead of staying disciplined and making consistent plays on each drive

Stop relying on JUCO's & GT's at a pivotal Corner spot, guys like Dean & Delaney have been liabilities in the secondary & they should only ever be at Miami as backups, not depended on as starters in big games. We got 3 young gun Corners plus Tecory Couch coming in, between Blades Jr, Ivey or Frierson one of them should be sufficient & developed enough to pair alongside Bandy.

Run Defense. Hopefully with Nesta emerging, Bethel/Ford step up and become stout in stuffing the run game upfront. Our Achilles heel as a team since 2016 has been Run defense, we do great in getting sacks, TFL's & forcing turnovers but we have to be more consistent in stopping the run game.

Curious to se how we replace Joseph Jackson's production, Garvin will continue to be a beast & I hope Rousseau gets back healthy because we'll need him big time.

I'm most confident in Safety play, Banda has actually done a good job in coaching up the Safeties since Jenkins/Carter to Quan/Redwine, I think Hall & Carter are going to be a beast duo.

I like the addition of Blake Baker to the staff as DC a lot as well, I look forward to seeing how he'll call games & how much semblance with Diaz he has & how much he does things his own way while still operating Diaz's system.

What I hope above all else happens is that this staff changes its approach to recruiting & stop with the eggs all in one basket style. We need to go scorched earth & stop being so picky with offers, we need to recruit for depth & start taking more chances early on under the radar local recruits, the kids they snub for the big stars that always play us for fools usually end up signing with schools that are just as good & competitive as us.

I think our Defense will maintain its top 5-10 status despite some of the losses to the NFL.

Don't see it AS MUCH personally from Pinck, though I see what you're saying. Overall tackling beyond the Safeties and Bandy was not great last year.

Some good points LCE. I’m very worried about the run defense. We get gashed up the middle far too often and losing Willis isn’t going to help. I think we’ll be alright but some new guys are going to have to step up fast.

Can’t agree more on the recruiting. Entire blueprint needs to be changed. I think one good thing from Richt is that it seems a lot of local relationships were mended from the Golden era. But that’s just step 1. The philosophy and approach need to change

It would appear every long RB run was through a hole with all the LBs elsewhere.

I don't agree with alot of the things posted in this thread but I completely agree with your 2 points. Our LBs are talented but they just to be more consistent . It always seemed they would play great for stretches and very average for stretches , well besides Shaq who is just a beast.
And as you as you said there is bad tackling by our DB/S to often.

I have very little to complain about from the Dline .

Need 96 to have the biggest jump of improvement on this team after QB.

Need him to play to his size and ability, it’s year 3 it’s go time. If he doesn’t then I’m worried about our defense because we will be weak in the middle IMO. Love Nesta but he is the penetrating type and Bethel simply lacks the size to hold up consistently all year and be THAT GUY we need him to be at NT/1T. A sub 300 pound NT isn’t the most ideal situation especially beside another shorter limbed guy like Nesta. Ford on the other hand is IMO. We really need Ford to beat him out, JMO.

Fair.

Obviously talent isn’t an issue. But let’s not forget JJ didn’t exactly play like an AA early in his career and Redwine really jumped later as well.

This year might be tough even if both these guys end up stars.

i'm wondering if that isn't just manny's scheme. have the lb's fill a hole, any hole quickly. let the safeties come up and make the tackle. never seemed like the lb's ever tried to dissect the run play instead they just crash down and hope for the best. the x and o guys here can expound on it better.

Very good points on Jaquan and Redwine. Experience goes a long way too. But yes, I think we're taking a step back on D this year... just lose way too much experience. Knew Jackson would leave, but THANK GOD the LB's are coming back.

You make a good point. Very good. Perhaps it is symptomatic of play calling.

I suspect early on Manolo will have several great Ws as HC, but we need to be willing to relive UT vs BYU on more than one occasion.

He'll need to work on getting to Saban-like consistency.

DT will be average barring some miracle improvement. The team does not have the depth necessary in 2019 and basically will be relying on true freshmen and/or unproven players. Hopefully depth and talent(for the better) changes in 2020.

Gotta sign more hogs in the middle!
