Defense Player Evaluations

If we had trouble sacking Armstrong, Golson is going to eat us alive.

We just have to stop overrunning the play.

McCord missed a handful of sacks as he's just not that good a pass rusher. Doesn't do us any good if he runs real fast 4 yards past the qb, or gets ridden too far inside.

Everyone here seems to think he's Lawrence Taylor, and he might be just as quick and fast, but he has no nose for the qb.
If he can ever control his rush, he would have double digit sacks before we reach game 6.

McCords as quick and fast as LT?

Here is what I'll say about this D. Right now they are playing very hard. AQM has one speed, but he needs to find 10 more pounds. Jenkins also, one speed.

Armstrong is no slouch, last year he was an athlete playing quarterback this year he has improved as a passer and is a true dual threat

I'll wait to see how he does against a real defense before I call him a " true dual threat ". He didn't exactly blow my skirt up against Byu

One thing I liked about the defense at the end of the game was in OT D'Ono actually used a spy and only sent a 4 man rush that still ended up making him scramble right. The spy is what kept him from running for a gain and forced him to rush a pass or throw it away. I wish D'Ono was smart enough to have maybe used the spy after the first TD to make it 33-18, but nonetheless he finally learned in OT and low and behold it actually worked and clinched the game.

I'm just hoping and praying the coaches learn from this game and realize what led to us dominating early. The aggressiveness and free reign on both sides, the 1 gap, and that D'Ono realizes that the spy works and when we play another QB who can run, he uses it earlier than in OT.

McCord sucked first half in setting the edge. His play improved later in the game.

-Heurtou is low key having a good year. Big man ran down couple screens so far this year..and actually has been disruptive a few tackles for loss. He controlled his guard inside pretty well

-Jenkins at time him and heurtolu were having their way inside. Jenkins looks
Good this year.

- Norton I like the young buck..I could
Live with a penalty for being aggressive..hands to the face he got early. He is disruptive. I like the rotation at td we have so far.

-Aqm don't know his stats but if you leave him one on one he is likely I gonna beat your tackle. Was being held all game.

-Kirby I have no clue why this dude constantly runs up on guys then puts his hand up like " I didn't do nothing" all it does is draw more attention to him. Kirby for as big as he is...isn't really physical. Honestly he may be better as an olb.. But he can line up d for us and can play mike. His grade for me is a c for the year. And I'm a Kirby fan...he is not impress sing me..a whole lot of bad run fits..and wrong gap hits. I'm still waiting for him to shoot under a block and make a play.

- elder is money. Kid needs to hook up with Brent grimes in the offseason. That's who he reminds me of

- burns if he continues to get picks he is nfl bound. In the fourth quarter he was gassed though. Nfl size and is a solid 4.45-4.5 guy. With a better DBS coach can you imagine him?. Because he's showed he can play this year.

-Howard up n down game. I like his ability in this defense. Plays run support ok... Made a few plays early on that I liked. End of the game seemed to be sleep walking as we strated playing a soft zone...he played wayyy to soft in it though.

- carter physical as all he'll. has tools. Seems like in covg just needs a bit more confidence..dude actually leaped early in the game and almost made a heck of a pick. He did target though..and I don't care I liked it.

- Crawford didn't kill is yesterday. Was solid in run support. Going to play a lot as well next week..he's ok playing downhill. Not sure of his covg skills. Which is wierd as he came in to the program with a ton of picks in high school. He had a solid game

Juwan young got some snaps... Big *** kid.

-Trent Harris if he plays so much in going to need to see more production. Because he is aging a pass rush role I would like to see chad get to rush against tackles.

- gayot busted a few covg. Which is wierd because he is a safety. He has speed though and I like him paired with a bigger guy inside. Hasn't looked to bad playing lb. seems to have some pass rushing skills as well.

agree with everything except the weight gain for some guys. our strength and condition program has not been able to gain lean weight and maintain speed so for mccord and grace to gain weight, then you can kiss their speed goodbye. and who cares about mccord needing to gain weight for the NFL. we need him to play at an effective weight now. let him gain or lose weight as needed when he hangs it up. never understand that mentality. sure it's nice to have the NFL pipeline. but you don't sacrifice wins for making sure everyone is prepared for the NFL. the goal is to win now.
Yearby maintained speed well.

there wasn't a lot of speed to begin with. he's more quick than fast

Crawford can shoot an alley very well. Its his open field tackling that needs improvement. Besides choc, i would like to see Jenkins get a lot more playing time.

Jamal Carter- He is a strong Safety not a free safety.. Not that he cant play free safety but he is a better strong safety... He doesnt react as quick as Bush..DOnofrio had him lining up so deep it was hard for him to make a play on that deep bomb where he got the targeting call and on the TD.. I have the feeling Corch D told him dont let anything get behind you... he should have been playing 5 yards closer. But im sure hes coached to do that... He should be playing a hybrid role closer to the line of scrimmage... C

Deon Bush- Been Hurt every year I agree with the switching out...Never out of position..Great playmaker..Broke up the 1st pass I wamt him to add about 10 more pounds so he can last a season. A

Crawford Aint gonna lie he played a great game. He made some solid tackles. tackled high (sound familiar) instead of diving at ankles... Only if he were faster and tallerA

Jenkins- Didnt get much playing time and I dont know why. He seems to be the 4th safety

Burns- played a good game but it looked like he tired towards the end of the game..I still want him to be more physical at the line of scrimmage..He has the body to do that..If he had Tracy Howards attitude he would be a sure fire 1st round pick. Nice pick at the goal line..Looks like his ball skills are improved B+

Howard Yea he was picked on today..They tried to throw at Elder and got naa daa..They threw at burns and got a pick... They decided to go Howards way..As i said he is small and is not athletic as Elder..He is a slot corner in the NFL...HE gets bodied by bigger WR but he played a good game had some break ups... Hes still a good corner but will do better against smaller WR's and is better in pressman coverage where he can disrupt them at the line jamming was his best quality coming outta high school but he is not really allowed to do it that much here B-

Elder -

Boy does everything right he is a 2nd round corner 1st if he was a little bigger he is a little light in the *** needs to breakdown when blitzing he has missed 2 blitz sacks this year.. costly miss cost us a stop only reason for the AA-

Grace Best linebacker on the team by far...so fast so explosive..needs to get a lil bigger and stronger misses a few tackles because of it but man is he good He is best in open space..I am not worried about any WR screen when hes on the field A

Kirby I will admit He plays fast he plays well chasing down plays but not as agressive when running at him... a lil soft.. When he has a chance to stop for no gain or 1 yard losses they turn into 4 yard gains with Kirby... Go look at first play from scrimmage it should have been a 2 yard loss Kirby hesitated and Newby gained 4 yards. He is not apocraphyl we have had worst. B-

Mccord- Lost some speed due to weight gain...He actually plays the pass well.... But has lost some explosion coming around that end... He was faster coming around that end freshman and sophomore years. A no win situation he needed to gain weight for an NFL career but I think his best option was to stay at 235 and try to play OLB but Darrion Owens is better than him.. Best thing for the team was to be a 235 situational pass rusher but that barely gets you into the league.. i aint mad I think he will make some big plays for us this year.. C+

Chad Thomas Playing out of position at times we have him lined up at DT is he a double digit sack guy? No Very few are in college. But his numbers are taking a little bit of a hit of what he is asked to do.. But you can see on film he has the strength and the pop.

Gotta go Ill try and finish the rest later
That's the golden way have 5 star de holding up blockers

How is it that no dlineman put his hands up to block pass attempts the entire game..

I've wondered that myself for the last couple of years.

Maybe Dorito has them focused on something else.

From what I was told by a source very close to the situation, if your D lineman keep their hands down, it makes it easier for your DB's to make a play on the ball.

Wasted McCord. I remember when Dmoney said he was a 3 and done type player. Chads career is getting wasted just like chickillo. Carters career is getting wasted. Jenkins needs to start every game either wise he'll be wasted as well. Too much talent in this team that is not even remotely playing up to potential.

Bush and Burns are easily 1st rounders at any other school. Same goes for Chad Thomas. Guys like Jenkins, Grace, Carter would high draft picks too if used correctly. It's a **** shame.

AQM was good against the run, pursued the ball carrier well
Finally !!!
AQM contained his side.. I'm not gonna throw former players under the bus, but AQM played the run well and got after the quarterback a little bit.

Armstrong is bad man. He's not a dual threat. The best offense was Pellini's offense. He's a very inconsistent passer.

He rushed for 700 yards last year with 6 touchdowns and threw for 2700 with
22 touchdowns. How is he not a dual threat?
