He has a motor which helps. I just think Lowe, Blount, and Charles all have better bend and speed. Lightfoot/Pickett clearly have a ton more, and if they add the weight to help set the edge, they can creep into more snaps, eating into his.

I would say that Charles is more of a Jack

Fair, and if that happens then maybe they nudge him to gain weight and convert him to a 3-tech.

He's motor and toughness provide value to our current defensive scheme.

Lightfoot was 200lbs coming in and weighs 230lbs now. Pickett was 190 and now 210. Bryant I believe was 200 and now 230-240. Charles is 230lbs now and likely gets over 240-245 by August once on campus with good S&C/nutrition if he is an EE. I also haven't seen much of him backing off the line like a Jack normally does(LB play).

I was under the impression he would be back at some point this year. How serious is his injury? Will he play at all this year?

Guys don’t take into consideration Development, Injuries, and etc when making bold statements. He has the skill set to be in the rotation after Bain and Mesidor leaves.

Rotation yes, replace no. Lowe, Charles, Blount have much higher ceilings imo. He also needs to add more weight to give us the option of moving him to 3t during the nascar packages. Lightfoot, Lowe, Blount, Charles, McConathy, Pickett, Bryant… hopefully Tank or another de body with elite talent

Mesidor is playing the Jack this year. I think that Charles frame looks like he can be an explosive Edge in the 250's, Strong Side DE in Heatherman's D is usually larger

Jack is a stand up end in a 3-4 look. Mesidor is playing end and DT in a 4-3 looks. Technically we could be in a 3-3 look with Thomas at rover. Nonetheless, Lightfoot hasn’t had his hand in the ground and Mesidor hasnt played standing up.
 
Regardless of whether or not McConathy proves capable of first team, we need to be active in the portal for that 4i role Bain and Mesidor fill. Only two on roster capable of that are Lowe and McConathy. That’s not enough.

Actually in Hetherman Defense the Jack is usually the boundary DE on the short side of the field. There are times when Mesidor and Bain have both played it this year in Base 4-2-5 D.

Sure all of them can play edge but you aren’t going to drop a hand in the ground in the 4-3 with Lightfoot every down. We aren’t seeing Bain drop off the line. Mesidor really shouldn’t be doing but he is the DC.

Charles is big enough to play DE. Hasn’t played in space much from what I’ve seen. Will grow to be 240-250 likely by August with the frame/build he has.
