DC candidates

So Mark Richt didn't understand the type of players in S Fl? His #1 choice for DC was Aranda. And he runs a 3-4. I think you are stuck in the 3-4/4-3 debates from a decade ago. 3-4 has a lot of variations now. Aranda invented a version of the 3-4 that doesn't rely on war daddies.

"But after Allen graduated Wisconsin was bereft of said war daddies, so Aranda adapted. Namely, he crafted “peso,” a front that relies less on one war daddy in the middle as a nose tackle and instead relies on two lighter (but still big, think more like 6-3 275 lbs) guys who play inside over the guards while fielding a plethora of versatile linebackers." Leonhard is an Aranda disciple.

Cristobal and Leonhard would have no problem finding 6'3" 275 lb players in S Fl.
I don't know if Leonhard is really a disciple of anyone. Dude was one of the smartest Safeties I've seen survive the NFL. He's like 5' 8". Tough as nails, too.

We have the highest budget in the ACC. Let's come over top with a better offer.
Napier has eliminated both I believe but I still think we can do better than either Knowles or Belk. Not that they aren't excellent coaches but I still think we can aim higher because of our budget. Go big or go home. However in Mario's case he came home so he could go big!

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!!!!!!!

Edit. I meant to say we can do better than Belk. Jim Knowles would be an excellent hire IMO.

that dude is a legend up here in northeast ohio. I wouldn't be upset at all If we got him as DC

doesn't seem to be any connection though so I doubt he gets a call

true but Mario didn’t have connection to Joe Moorhead, Geoff Collins, Todd Orlando, or Scott Scatterfield when he hired them

muschamp was subpar in his last stint as DC at Auburn before taking the USCe job, I would pass on him

I am all aboard the jim knowles train, I don't think he would come here but I wish he would

Right on point my brother. Leonhard is an elite DC and an Aranda disciple as you pointed out. Forget the minutiae of a 3-4 vs 4-3 debate. An elite DC is an elite DC. Let him figure that out. That's what he does for a living and what he gets paid 7 figured to do.

I think any of these 3 would be great and ensure we build something special imo

Jim Knowles - give this man a blank check, took over okie state in 2018 and has absolutely turned a sh*tty defense into one of the best in the country

Phil Parker - Iowa DC - hasn't allowed 20 ppg since 2015 and that was right at 20. Excellent DC

Derek Mason - Excellent at stanford and a great year at auburn this year too giving up 22ppg

----

these 3 I wouldn't be thrilled about but not ****ed either

mike tressell - Cincy

Doug Belk - Houston DC

zach arnett - mississippi state (formerly san diego state)

Jim Knowles makes $800K
Jim Leonard makes $1.12M
Zach Arnett makes $1M

*Salaries from online sources, FWIW

Leonard would seem the least available. Everyone assumes he’s a Wisconsin lifer, heir to Paul Chryst. But if you don‘t inquire, you’ll never get a ‘Yes’.

Arnett interviewed with Mario at Oregon, and at other programs, before last season but chose to stay at Mississippi State.

That's a great find I didn't know Arnett interviewed

I wonder why Mario didn't go with him

Call it PTSD if you want to, but I simply think our recruiting base doesn't yield the massive inside bodies we need in most variants of a 3-4. It's a risky move given that. Even our best DT on the roster right now in Leonard Taylor isn't a natural NT for a 3-4.

Most of our local kids are playing in 4-3's or 4-2-5 hybrids in HS. It's a draw for them to play in a similar system when they come to college because they don't have to learn a massive jump in concepts/systems, and they can contribute earlier when they get to campus.

All implementing a 3-4 at Miami does is set us up for having to swim upstream trying to fit the personnel the whole time we're running it.
This is an old style thinking of a 3-4 defense. Michigans base defense is a 3-4 but most of the time they're in a 4-2-5. Alabama runs a 3-4 but they're in a 4-2-5 more than the 3-4. With teams running mostly spread offenses 3-4 defenses have changed playing lighter dts and playing more nickel and dime. It's more about versatility in your defense. Wisconsin is really the only 3-4 team I can think of that actually runs their base defense more than nickel and dime.

Bring me Muschamp.
I've always thought he was overrated. I could be wrong but I would prefer one of the following...In no particular order

1) Jim Leonhard (Wisconsin)
2) Derrick Mason(Auburn)
3) Jim Knowles(Oklahoma State)
4) Phil Parker(Iowa)
5) Jimmy Lake( Former Washington HC, DC)
6)Jon Heacock(Iowa State)
7) Doug Belk (Houston)
8) Zak Arnett(Mississippi State)
9) Brad White(Kentucky)
10) Mike Tressell(Cincinnati)
11) Barry Odom(Arkansas)
12) Alex Grinch(USC)
13) Morgan Scalley(Utah)
14) Brad Lambert(Purdue)
15) Dan Lanning(Georgia)
16) Glenn Schuman(Georgia)
17) Ron Roberts(Baylor)
18) Mike Siravo(Carolina Panthers)
19) Nate Woody(Army)
20) Will Muschamp(Georgia.Ok I'll include him)
21) Vince Kehres (Toledo)
22) Scott Symons (Liberty)
23) Jeremy Pruitt (New York Giants)
24) Chad Staggs (Coastal Carolina)

I hope this is more for defensive staff than DC, but keep an eye on Clint Hurtt (spent the last 8 years in the NFL, mostly with Pete Carroll).
I hope not.

And before people ask, Seattles defensive line has been underwhelming to say the least for a few years now.
