DB Omar Thornton commits to Miami

While watching his highlights after he forces a fumble against ND the announcer flat out says, "that's why he'll play at the next level"

Now that's likely a BC color commentator and it's no lock he's right of course. But for them to be talking about a kid on a losing team (who got spanked pretty bad on multiple occasions this year) as a true sophomore like that shows you how highly think of his play.

We don't really ask our Nickel to do anything that requires THAT much speed. We're a mainly Cover-3 team. We seldom play any man. Scott ran to the flats most of the time. (doesn't require much speed)

What the Nickel position requires mostly is twitch, willingness to tackle, willingness to fit the run, ability to blitz, and violence.
Sounds like Thornton to me. Always appreciate your analysis, Macho.

It feels like ages ago, but I can't remember who played nickel when Scott went out. I know Fitzgerald was filling in for Thomas.
Fitz had the second most snaps at nickel. Weird cause he’s the biggest ballhawk we had and the weakest tackler (not open field, but in the box wise). Should’ve been the deep safety.

Damari wasn’t supposed to start at nickel. Guidry thought that would be his best position but brown had no interest in playing it
Guidry suck, I wouldn’t listen to him either 😂.

In all seriousness, Brown at nickle with Lucas, OJ, and O’Connor would be crazy. Can get your 4 best cover players on the field and not lose a drop in physicality.

Fitz's snaps at nickel came when Scott was injured. Otherwise he was playing almost exclusively deep safety
I think he’s a beast but his strength is covering . Wonder if he couid play cb if we needed him like example last year in the championship . We was injury away from not having enough cbs

A lot of competition for the Safeties and nickle positions. We’ll see who wins the starting position and where.

Staff needs to figure out of Thornton/Hussey who will fill the roles of Scott/Thomas.

I hope he's watching the playoffs. The Seahawks have a superstar in the nickel. It's a major impact position now and he's perfect for it.
I don’t think we can rely on him in the nickel even if he wanted to. He can’t stay healthy. Scott was in the box, holding edges, taking on blocks. Not sure brown can take that based on his track record.

Not to mention our very own Agent 0 this past year. I would argue he was as big a star and game changer as any outside CB in college football
I’ve never seen Damari exhibit the things that made Scott such a playmaker. I don’t think even in glimpses. The first time Damari takes on and defeats a puller or second level OL would surprise me. Sometimes, no matter how it looks on paper with attributes, it doesn’t translate to the field. For our sake, I hope the money motivates him to flash what many say they believe he can do. Would elevate our defense.

i dont see why we wouldn’t have a very strong rotation at Nickel and CB overall this yr: I think all the younger CBs (and safeties like Dunnigan) if they want to play asap will be begging to compete at nickel.

The fact is safety is a far larger depth threat we need to consider if we want to make a deep run. IMO we really only have 3 safeties we’d feel comfortable with with Fitzgerald, Poyser, and Thornton now. Day is next up but not exactly proven at all… so just depth and injury threats dictate us needing to have more ready to contribute and rotate in at nickel than just the safeties - all of whom I’d be comfortable rotating down to nickel - though I’d want Fitzgerald to stick at deep safety.

**** I’d want Damari/Lucas to maybe get some rotation at safety in practice too…

But Nickel literally all our freshman DBs, Damari, they should be going all in to compete there…

OJ and OConnor are pure CBS and going to be top 2/4 in outside CB rotation. Lucas and Damari can move inside or back to safety if necessary. Antoine is next up as pure outside cb imo… so just a **** load of Nickel snaps and Safety snaps if injuries to be had…

Can anyone on the roster do this? One of my biggest worries for 26

For reference, Jakobe had a 19% missed tackle rate and Keionte had a 20%

Not excusing it. Just some context.
Most of it comes from those quick hitter screens but those numbers aren’t noticeable to us due to our gang tackling
