in judging offensive coordinators, I focus heavily on their play calls inside the red zone.
Three of Dawson’s calls come to mind:
— The Toney end-around that put us ahead of A&M late in the 4th quarter.
— Beck’s stutter step and dump off to Fletcher for the first score against OSU.
— Beck’s handoff to Fletcher, after indicating an end-around to Toneyto keep close vs Indiana. He walked in with no trouble.
There were some great red zone calls vs. Mississippi, too.
Smart play-calling in crucial situations,
Not sure this guy gets enough credit.

When you look at totality of everything, especially with Beck being soo limited (having to completely strip RPO offense out, arm not able to take shots, complete elimination of intermediate pass offense, etc) and having to design an offense with no explosives whatsoever (when every OC will tell you explosives and turnovers are keys to a good offense) I thought he did as best he could with what he had..

Disclaimer: He took wayyy too long to adjust in TAMU game and first half in championship game was not good enough and I wish someone would atleast ask a question about that to get an understanding but that will never happen..

Having watched every snap of Mensah and our 2024 offense, I expect the rpo stuff to come back, the intermediate offense to be a major piece again, a much more explosive offense, and the narrative on Dawson to change when we are must see tv rockstar top 5 offense again.. (our fans are crazy, I still remember the narrative last season of Mario getting rid of Maribal, I didnt forget)

Dawson gets better as the game goes on.

I don’t think our opening scripts are anything to write home about, but he knows how to make in-game adjustments.
Many have actually argued the opposite, even in our #1 offense season in '24 most games we would start out hot, then I think 2nd qtr would just be nothing once script was over then late in games we would need heroics again..

He’s been really good here. I think last year was just an adjustment from how RIDICULOUS Cam Ward was at generating offense versus how calculating Beck was when throwing the ball. I hated that we didn’t throw the ball deep or take more shots but it’s hard to complain with the success we had. I have a really weird feeling this year is going to look like Cam’s year but with a lot more efficiency in grabbing chunk yards at will.

I’ll take what we have. I remember seeing teams look like world beaters on the opening drive and never do **** the remainder of the game.

That 2nd quarter **** from 2024 was insane

The defense would keep the other team in the game and next thing you know we have another heart attack game

One thing Ive heard about Dawson that recently is he is extremely open to suggestions from assistants and staff, and in fact, values it. Apparently hes not as arrogant as he comes off in interviews.

He got better and really shined in the playoffs. I give him a break on A&M because the wind made it nearly impossible to throw.

Honestly, I get why some people think he’s coming off as arrogant in those but I actually don’t feel that way at all. I think he comes off of aware of what the scuttle bud is through whatever means he’s finding out and he’s just being a little playful and tongue in cheek with some of the guys Asking the questions.

I actually love his interaction with the media. It isn’t always pure coach Speak bull****.

Hes said so himself when talking about mirabal and Merritt.

Specifically the against A&M down here a few years ago. He credited mirabal for the creative call to get George in on a shirt motion in the red zone.
