David Yost Fired At Texas Tech

Diaz will be fired soon enough. I listen to nothing he has to say. He's a POS and nothing against him. I would rather cut my loses and start over with someone else. He has enough of a sample size for me to know this job is above his level. We will be mediocre and then he will be fired in 2022. Watch the cycle though, rinse, wash and repeat.

He's going to be here through 2022 like it or not. Cutting losses before 2022 isn't happening. Might as well say that Miami should try to hire away Dabo from Clemson. Both things are just as likely.

So someone can either look for practical solutions that might give him the best chance to be successful-- or at least build the strongest program for the next coach to inherit (an anti - Richt so to speak )- or not offer solutions because they have decided they want another coach and want to hasten his departure.

Personally as much as I think he or any Miami coach before him is probably doomed to failure, I'm still going to propose the best solutions I can that would give that HC the best chance at addressing the deficiencies.

I want Diaz to succeed just like I hoped Richt, Golden, and Shannon would have succeeded although right now I don't think he will. With each previous coach, there were some very obvious and easy solutions that could have led to vastly different results.

Assuming Diaz has two more years before he gets canned, at this point the best course of action for Diaz's career might be to focus his efforts on making sure the offense is as dynamic as possible and accepting the defense is hugely flawed. The scheme on offense is fine, it just needs a talent infusion and a few tweaks. The defensive scheme is broken and unless he abandons his defensive philosophy, he's not going to be able to fix it before the clock runs out. High end CBs aren't available in the portal and I don't see any talent on the rooster that will develop into lockdown CBs. His position coaches on defense are generally awful so I don't think player development at any other position is going to address the flaws. Taylor might be a dynamic DT, but that is going to be because of natural skill like Gerald Willis.

Bring in some top notch offensive analysts and hit the portal hard for offensive talent. A dynamic offense with a terrible D will look a lot like a Mike Leach team or a homeless man's Oklahoma, but at least it will be more fun to watch. Diaz really has one year to fix it. I know we are worried about 2021's opener with Bama, but 2022's schedule is absolutely brutal and I already see 3 near-guaranteed losses on the schedule: @ Clemson, @ TAMU, UNC. Just two slips (@ VT, @ UVA) and he's 7-5 or maybe 7-6 in year 4 and I am sure that will be it for him.

This may seem like an exaggeration, but this UNC loss is probably the end of his career if you look at the big picture. If Miami wins that game and then a NY6 game (or lost a hard fought NY6 game), he'd earn huge amounts of goodwill for success during a crazy season and that might have enough to get him a fifth year even if he finished 7-6 against a brutal schedule in year 4. No one will remember 8-2, they'll remember the season ending with the worst defensive performance in program history, at home, and players quitting on him for the second year in a row. If there was ever a time for Diaz to hit the panic button, right about now would be a good time.
That post had it all; intelligent analysis *and* the term “homeless mans oklahoma”.

well done.

What’s maddening tho is that the fixes are obvious to everyone BUT these coaches.. and the problem is the SAME **** one for each coach.

This AD needs to ask better questions in their job interviews.

And Flake will either hire another mediocre MAC coach or promote another clueless lifetime coordinator.

My number 1 hope is that he sees the writing on the wall and manages to change his philosophy on defense and brings more experienced coaches/analysts on both sides of the ball.
My number 2 is that the AD/BOT don't offer an extension no matter the record next season, so there's no issue of a buyout if he falls apart in 2022

That was one of the big issues with how James went about the hiring. If he'd interviewed a lot of a candidates and then decided on Diaz, then fine, at least he went through a process. But why wouldn't you interview a bunch of candidates just in case some of them have an interesting perspective on how to address the problems in the program? They might see something you don't. It's a great opportunity to learn. Maybe you even identify someone promising but don't hire him, and he can get a look if the position opens up again for some reason.

What a mess

2 points.

1. Yost has been with Wells for a bit now. The HC at TT isn’t afraid to make a tough decision on someone who is most likely considered a friend.

2. I was high on Yost, his offenses at Utah State were creative and exciting. I haven’t watched TT in a while but I’m curious if he was just figured out or didn’t adapt to his personnel.
