David Feely Expected to be hired as SC Coach

Does this guy actually have any formal education in this field?

Swasey and Felder did not.
Hester has a degree in exercise physiology.
Degrees mean very little to me (and I did have a bachelors in Exercise and Sports Science). The certs carry some weight, but still don’t mean a whole lot.

More important is who were his mentors and what has he been exposed to. You learn 90% of what you know in that biz through experience (time as an asst) and a solid mentor.

I believe Jay Butler was his mentor. Maybe someone can find something on that.

I mostly disagree with you here.

It is definitely important to have mentors and experience coaching under other great coaches, I don't deny that one bit. But this isn't the 70's anymore. New research in exercise physiology emerges every year. An educational background in exercise science and relevant industry-standard certifications like the CSCS doesn't guarantee you'll be a great coach, but it at least tells me that this person has the foundational aptitude to understand the science behind their training and why they do it. Otherwise the training philosophy just becomes, "Well because I learned under coach so and so and that's what he did."

Yeah, sorry, I want a guy who has formal learning in this area.

Like Alpha said, we’re in a time of football where approaching the game and the process with analytics and actual intelligence is pushing out the old guard. The 3 yards and a cloud of dust, bring a lunch box stuff is dead. We need badasses but guys with high IQs and formal educations in their field.

I don’t need some idiot who’s learned what he knows through “street smarts” running around teaching our team the same bro science I can find at LA Fitness on any given night.

Seems like a crazy concept. Hire someone in this position thats actually studied it at a higher institution. Wow.

I love how most 'Canes fans sucked off Swasey for years as one of the best in the business then it comes out that he wasn't even certified to be in the weight room and now most of those same fans already know this guys sucks.

Lol, he’s actually one of my all time favorite fighters.

Yep, one of the best to ever lace em up, plus he could take a punch, his style was funny, just walking round the ring going where he wanted to, fighting when he wanted to fight. I think he got the shoulder roll more down pat than floyd. One of the best defensive fighters that never gets mentioned as one, i might put em in 3rd behind floyd, pernell than him.

Exactly. Loved how he slip the counter immediately. You’re defensive list looks like mine. I got Pee-wee ahead of Floyd though.

Swasey got a pass from most Canes because he was part of that 2001 team that destroyed everyone. They made the easy correlation that he must have had something to do with it. Like I said in another post, it's pretty easy to look like a genius when you're the strength coach for Ed Reed, Vilma, Jeremy Shockey, Andre Johnson, McGahee, Clinton Portis, etc.

The reason i always put floyd ahead of peewee is because roger dropped em, and the way his face looked against de lace ahoya, he couldnt get out of the way of his jab, so that eye got welped up!

Can’t argue with that.

Once they fine people will to work for Manny and the price we will pay, then Manny will announced it was the guy he was trying to get the whole time.

The general consensus I'm seeing is that this is a slam dunk hire. So...I'm going to trust the people who know what they're talking about (former coaches, guys who've worked with him) before I listen to the experts on CIS.

All of the analytics and “new age” methodologies still haven’t managed to push out good ole fashioned Oly lifts. If someone has shown you the ropes on how to train the technique of the big 4 lifts, and how to develop a well thought out program off of that, then you are more than half way there.

New information in the field is great, but you don’t wanna get caught up in the weeds with the overwhelming amount of research and experimental training that takes place, and lose focus of the basics.

What I will say is that it’d be nice to have a qualified speed and agility coach on staff (or hire someone off the track staff).

S&C coach is the most important hire a staff can make. They spend the most amount of time with the kids. This is a very underwhelming hire, what's the point of getting rid of Felder when you're just replacing him with a guy who's experience is just as bad

Felder got replaced because he wasn't punctual. And the beast in the team felt they needed bigger challenges. He might suck but he gots the support of his former coaches. Manny didn't have that much support coming in. We will see at least hes young and not stuck in his ways saying his system has worked for 20 years

No one said anything about "new age" training, where some guru makes everyone do yoga and focuses on overtly "functional" movements and no load.

I'm not sure why these are mutually exclusive, and this is why I want someone with an educational background in this field. That IS the basics, and provides a foundational aptitude that allows you to decide what new research and methodologies are worthwhile to implement in your weight room, and which ones are garbage and a waste of time.

No doubt. Mickey Marotti over at Ohio State has a guy specifically for speed/agility.

Posted this in the other Feely thread and thought I’d share here. Brought me comfort over a google search or reading Temple boards for their reaction:

Just texted with a friend that played at Ball State when he was there and was all-MAC, now coaches at YSU under Pelini and bounced around NFL practice squads for 5 years with about 1 active season: “should be a happy Canes fan getting Feeley” I like it
