Dave Aranda: Great DC Or Cool Ranch Doritos?

Chise and a few others brought up how he coached under Greg McMackin in Hawaii---well he strictly ran a 4-3 Cover 4 there. He started adapting that system b/c of all the spread teams he saw, but his entire system is in many ways rooted in that old Miami defense.

Not a knock on Aranda but I do think people underestimate program fits. Barry Alvarez was a very successful coach. Shalala was apparently pushing for him to take over. Would his way of doing things been a fit in Miami in 2001 and in the future? It would be interesting to see how 4-3 ends and DTs in south Florida and throughout the state would take to being told we're gonna use you as a distraction to free up one of our four LBs and you're not gonna put up numbers.

SMH now we are back to this nonsense "fit" concept.

You know what fits at Miami? Good coaches who win.

So Joe Paterno in the 80s would've been a fit here? Great coach. Winner. Would his style of doing things have worked in the mid 80s and 90s in Miami?

Wisconsin defenses are always good but stats are misleading. Because the style/pace of play other offenses get much less possesions and plays. Also defenses is never rushed out after 12 second 3 and outs ala Baylor. Wisc teams are always smart/savy well coached kids that overachieve. Much different than dealing with athletic beasts at say LSU.

They haven't been outside the top 20 in total defense since 2008. Their offense the big ten and that style of play has alot to do with it.

Aranda just held USC to 200 yards less than their per game average, and 14 points less than their per game average. That is with a team of 2 and 3 star players going against a team of 4 and 5 star players.

USC averages 176 rush yards per game. Aranda held them to 65. Hard to possess the ball when your opponent decreases your rushing output by 60%.

On what earth are you looking at this and not drawing a conclusion that this man is an excellent DC????

And what DC would you prefer????

Alabama has a slower pace of play and is ranked slightly below Wisky. Does that mean Bama's D stinks too? Or does this only apply to northern school defenses?

Before USC they hadn't played an offense in the top 50 in the country outside of Nebraska. They were #35. USC is a mess up front and he took advantage of it. But that isn't a traditional good USC OL. Even Bama is at 51. Iowa is next at 70. They play in the crap half of the Big Ten and they have throughout his tenure there. The numbers are inflated. They're great numbers and he has done an excellent job but they deserve some context. You look at the games where you think the other team has athletes too and the results have been mixed.

Wisconsin played against 5 offenses ranked below 100 in total offense.

10 teams ranked 70th and below.

He's had a top 8 defense every year he's been a DC for like 5 years now. You are nitpicking b/c you have a bias against the fact that he labels his formation 3-4.

USC is the 28th ranked Offense and they held them to 200 total yards below their per game average. Does that not count? Oh I'm sorry Alabama beat them up, like they do to every single team that isn't filled with the kind of 5 star talent they have.

Honestly I can't think of a single other DC in the country not named Saban/Smart, Narduzzi or Chavis that has produced results this consistently good recently. Three of those guys are now HCs and the 4th is making a million plus and his aTm D is trash right now.

10 teams ranked 70th and below. That level of offensive ineptitude gives his numbers context. Considering the division he plays in the in conference numbers probably aren't all that different throughout his tenure there.

His Hawaii defenses were ranked 51st and 66th in total defense. His Utah St. defense was ranked 14th. So he not been churning out top 8 defenses for 5 years. He got to Wisconsin and improved upon a defense that was already a top 20 defense.

At Utah State his defense went up against he #1 defense in the country in 2012 in La. Tech. Gave up 629 yards. Utah State won in overtime. Next best offense was #30 San Jose State. Gave up 471 yards. Won the game 49-27. Did a great job against #32 Toledo in the bowl game. The defense gave up 315 yards.

BYU at #60 is on the list. They got 380 yards. 20 yards below their average.

Next was #65 Wisconsin. Held them to 234 yards.

He went up against 2 schools attempting to reclassify from FCS in Texas State and UTSA. Also had Southern Utah on the schedule.

4 other opponents who ranked #88 or below in total offense which included three ranked below #100.

IMO Aranda's 3-4 will work here!! I'm sure he will adjust to the savages that Coach Kool gives him! Grand Slam hire if it happens!
Go Canes!

Why are we even talking about this guy? Has there been any legit info about his interest in the position?

I will be disappointed if we don't get him. so, the rumor is wispy hc to eagles? If so, hope he doesn't take aranda with him.

This is literally the only place that I have heard that Paul Chryst is rumored to be the Eagles new head coach and I live in Wisconsin. I would bet the farm that he will not be leaving Wisconsin after this season...especially for a HC gig in the NFL. You must really over value his stock.

So there 5th in the country in yards per play and people are still trying to say Wisky's offense is what causes them to have such a high ranking. This board is incredible at times, if we posted the resumes of Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson before they got hired people would quickly realize they have no clue about how to predict a successful coach.

Idiots still arguing over the 3-4 and 4-3.... Then want to bring up the B10 offenses. What elite offenses does Miami play? The almighty average ACC. Slightly better offenses in the ACC but outside of F$U, we play chump coastal teams. Also the dumbasses saying no 3-4.... So you'd turn down coaches like **** LeBeau or Rex Ryan right? Obviously they're not possible but you get the point. 3-4 works when you have a coach who knows how to run it in an aggressive way. Same goes with the 4-3....
