This is how I know that people don't read a **** thing, nor understand history. People have NEVER, EVER played college football solely for fun. EVER. From the moment money got involved, teams started adding ringers and paying athletes to attend certain institutions. The only difference between NIL and what was happening back when Teddy R. was POTUS is that now, you don't have to hide that your starting tailback is getting paid.
The entire myth of amateurism is just that, a myth. Amateur sports were invented in the late 19th century, as a way to keep the working classes out of sports, to eliminate competition. A man working in a factory can't afford to go out and risk injury for free, because if he can't work, he can't survive. Never in human history before that point, was there such as thing as amateur sports. The Greeks and Romans didn't expect athletes to compete for free, athletes received land, military exemptions, and other things of value.
College football is a BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS and there is no reason why the labor shouldn't be paid accordingly. By the way, if it was truly about education, then schools like UNC would have received the death penalty for widespread academic fraud, because they stole the one thing of value the student athletes of the time could receive. Then again, considering that the academic standards for student athletes are so incredibly low, even the NCAA doesn't believe that to be an equal exchange of value.
