Daily Debate: Who will start at Middle Linebacker in 2025?

With Popo I think he was playing slower than he is based on not knowing his assignments fully. You can see film in season on certain plays where he was decisive and he looked plenty fast. If he wasn't taught properly or had issues grasping Guidry scheme that will make you look slower, less explosive. Hetherman has a good rep as a teacher and Popo is a great project to test that out.
I think our old LB coach was over rated. LB play was Meh his recruiting was solid but we need teachers. Mario will get the guys

I was told Washington is a freak, but couldn't pick-up the playbook. WTF kinda scheme were we running that our secondary couldn't line-up and a 2nd year LB couldn't execute the plays? 🙄

Hopefully with Hetherman things are simplified and all the kids get a clean slate. We need an infusion of athleticism and explosiveness at the LB spot. We're too slow and stiff.

I'm not going against you on this @Coach Macho but man, we heard with Al Golden too, mind you his DC was not very good, but Al Goldens defense at ND was good. Randy Shannon ran Cover 2 man under all day, Diaz let the DL do whatever they want and blitzed all day to simplify things and it worked for 2 years then turned into a spit storm.
What's going on really? Why is it so difficult to pick up a playbook? And a consistent problem? I got to lay a bit of blame on the local high school coaching up (not you, but generally) cause we keep hearing they're behind on financials and the coaches get poached, and the SFL HS runs simple stuff and just out athletes you, yes there are school that are outliers, but I mean, the proof in the pudding a guy like OJ Frederique comes in doesn't seem to have a problem, physically and mentally as a Fr, but came from a high school where they have a typically a higher level of coaching (i.e., Chaminade, American Heritage, Central to a certain degree)

The bigger question is Hetherman the goldilocks find, where he can simplify it enough where the young guns can get it, but still not run a vanilla defense every play, while still developing the talent?

My have missed your post, but how did it go w/ the coaching clinic Heatherman spoke at? Think it was LB focused you had mentioned.

I don't disagree with you bro.
A lot of coaches aren't sending these kids to college with a knowledge of the game.

Hayes or Popo need to be ready to go at MLB. And if they arent ready give Wiley Jr a shot... There is no reason we should be going to the portal for a MLB.

They aren’t reliable for whatever reason. Popo didn’t take over a game once when he was in. Maybe that was injury but you want your MLB to force DCs to have to change their playcalling and QBs to panic and get happy feet. That was not Popo in year 2. And Hayes couldn’t get any more than garbage time so you can’t count on him or true freshman Wiley either IMO.

One of those three better emerge not just as a Green Tree AA, they need to be be talked about as GT HOFers or we need to go shopping.
