DAILY DEBATE: Which freshman plays the most snaps this year?

Lyle? Did you all forget that Mario already has his bellcow on the roster in Martinez?

I’ll say a db. I think we’re a little thin there.

Top 3 RBs under Mario total touches (Rushes + Catches)… so snaps is going to be probably at least double for each of them given a general 50/50 Run Pass ratio (I don’t have pff to see snaps by player/yr)

2010: 182, 144, 96
2011: 261, 142, 21
2012: 186, 117, 56
2018: 229, 152, 60
2019: 211, 122, 94
2020*: 74, 73, 24
2021: 257, 86, 65 BUT Qb Anthony Brown had 151 rushing attempts.
2022: 147, 87, 55
2023: 112, 111, 99, 74

The “Bellcow” RB A) Isn’t really a thing anymore B) Probably isn’t even really what Martinez wants fully - he wants majority obviously but he’s not getting like 80% or something crazy, and C) Mario has almost never done that anyways.

Most likely Martinez will get like no more than 55% of the snaps. We ran like 876 offensive plays last yr. Martinez won’t play any special teams whereas the other RBs might/Will. Plus Martinez hasn’t even exlipsed 200 touches in a season. So Martinez probably getting no more than like 400-500 ish snaps. Still at least about 400 snaps to go around.

Allen got like 170 snaps last year. I could see Him getting like 125-150. Chris Johnson matching that. Maybe outdoing it if he plays special teams. I mean there’s a pretty reasonable path to Lyle getting 200 snaps without all that much difficulty, especially if we are going to be a high powered offense that runs more plays than last yr and likely puts subs in more often…

…Anyways I specifically stipulated IF Fletcher was hurt most of the season for my choice of Lyle being in the top running

I’m assuming Fletcher is missing at least half the season if not more. Injuries almost always seem to be much worse than originally determined with this staff.

On defense, it'll either be Patterson or Mack. We only have 1 proven safety in Powell. Jaden Harris has yet to breakout. Isaiah Taylor is just depth. Brian Balom is a non factor. Markeith is really inconsistent.

Currently at CB, the top 3 are DPJ, Hill, and Brown. So we're 1 injury away at CB from slotting Mack in. All Mack has to do is be better than Jadais Richard and Robert Stafford, who both haven't really shown anything to boast about or feel comfortable with that they're better options than Mack.

On Offense, it's probably Lyle if he really shines in the summer and Fall camp. There's absolutely no need to rush Fletcher back if Lyle can really be consistent at RB2.

Cole Mac isn’t gonna play that much. I know he impressed but he’s got Bain baron Alston and our guy from wvu who I’m blanking on. Plus Bryant

I think Patterson and Lyle probably most likely with Jojo and Lofton next up with leaders in snaps

Either Zaquan or Lofton, has to be. Trader might get lots of burn, but I think Ray Ray will play a lot. Maybe Blount plays a lot, or Justin Scott.

Blount just turned 17. I know he's a prodigy, but I honestly don't want him playing a lot. .... I could be wrong, but of the 3-4 DTs in the 2024 class we landed, Jones is the guy who I believe will be most plug and play. Dancing bear plus weight lifting champion means he should be more durable out of the gate. JMHO.

Call me crazy and just a hunch but I believe Blount will play DE in 2024 and plenty of it.

You definitely have a great point, didn’t know Blount just turned 17, and I am aware that jones is a amazing athlete especially for his size

Good stuff

Also I would just add that it’s year 3 and in general the snaps by freshmen should be down quite a bit in general. I don’t see a lot of freshmen playing a ton so it could be a lot of different people

Part of why I picked Cole. He’s down the depth chart but we rotate a ton and he will play extra snaps in blowouts and against crappy comp
