DAILY DEBATE: What should be the Canes’ top priority in the Portal?

Linebacker might be the worst position on the team in current form, in terms of guys ready to play quality snaps. Popo isn’t it, at least one guy is apparently portal bound, Patterson was almost moved there, and the younger guys aren’t ready. When you start hearing Chase Smith’s name, you know the position group isn’t in good shape.

That and safety, we need for sure. Throw in DTs, we are too reliant on a Justin Scott that didn’t do much to earn a starting spot and was seen sucking wind in drills. Aka even if he becomes a dream DT like we all think he can be, we need more quality bodies behind him. Just common sense

I would go after two LBs, another starting-caliber safety, pay the mother load for one elite DT and one rotational one, and lastly add an outside WR. I understand funds aren’t limitless, but ND will absolutely run right down our throat with our current defense. We will lose that game. Have to beef up the front 7 for them and beyond.

Top need is a true blocking tight end.

Second need is a good depth piece at defensive end who had minimal production at a smaller school.

If we nail those two things, we are set.

But for me it's:

S
LB
WR
RB
DT
QB
TE

S: If Lucas isn't moving to S, this honestly may be the #1 Need. Luckily I doubt it'll be the most expensive. If Lucas moves to Safety Like I believe he should (and possibly Damari) this moves S down the need list to like 4th.

LB: If this staff thinks going into this season that Wes, Chase Smith, and Alderman are 3 of top 4 in the rotation, this MUST be addressed and is a major need, probably 2nd to S tbh. If however the staff really likes where we are at with like Popo, Wiley, Pruitt, Hayes, and maybe Bobby returning sometime in Summer... then this drops to like 3rd with the exception of adding a true difference making MLB. I really like our young LBs potential, it's just about whether they've earned the jobs or not. I'm fine going with them, but am not fine with going into next season expecting Smith and Alderman to be heavily in the rotation.

WR: We really should go for one of the top WRs available. Our WR depth is complete garbage, even if the actual players on the roster I quite like. But we need someone that we can absolutely count on. Don't want to be in a position of reliance on 5 guys we literally have basically never seen in live action - Toney, Carr, Moore, Robinson, Upshaw... 2 WR additions is actually Ideal, but we need one top guy. Doesn't neccessarily have to be an elite like X type or anything. We just need a legit guy that significantly raises our WR rooms floor. The 2nd WR is probably need # like 5 or 6.

DT: We absolutely need another DT. But the question is how much to spend. I think that is directly proportional to how much we need to spend on S and LB. If we need to add starters at S and LB, then imo DT spend should get pushed down and we should target a rotation DT4 type. If however Lucas moves to S and the young LB earn starting jobs, well I think one of the top DTs in the portal should be targeted.

RB: Need a depth RB. Probably want a young guy coming from a smaller school who can compete immediatley with Pringle for RB3 job. Gotta be Cheap

QB: I'm assuming Emory is portalling out at this point, and QB becomes a need. But we seriously can't spend much. We're ****ed if Beck is injured, and honestly theres maybe 2 Qbs in the Spring portal I'd even want to play multiple games here instead of just giving the keys to Nickel and seeing what happens...
