The Defense was not the problem and if you think that you are not very bright. L'ville had less than 250 yds going into the 4 the qtr. We had multiple sacks, TFLs and forced TOs. That's good enough.
I didn't like the 3 man rushes, soft zones or Kirby being out there at all but we didn't yield much. The problem is when they moved the ball it looked easy but that doesn't take away from the results through 3 qtrs.
The problem is the offense. 4 consecutive 3/4 play drives coming out of the locker room sucked the life out of the D. Game over, this is on two men, Al Golden and James Coley.
It was good enough for yesterday. It is not good enough against better competition and certainly not as we expect to move forward toward Championship (Conference, at least) success. Louisville is not a great team and they made a lot of mistakes last night - dropped balls, etc.
I don't disagree that the offense is a problem. I simply disagree that the defense we saw last night is good enough going forward. At base, it lacks sufficient disruption. That's like looking at last year's UF game and saying "hey, we got TOs, some sacks and made plays when we needed to - that's enough." Yep. For that one game. It is a reaction to a specific game rather than a look at whether the concepts will hold up in future scenarios.
The perception that last night was a pretty good night for our defense is what scares me, since many people thought the same thing after the UF game last year. We didn't get continually gashed, and we caused some turnovers and we generally played more solid defense than we had, but there were still some glaring issues. Their QB, starting his first game, completed almost 75% of his passes. There were the same huge gaps in our zone coverage in the intermediate/middle that they exploited. We still didn't get a consistent pass rush. We still had our OLBs/rush DEs isolated in space on slot receivers, which obviously creates mismatches in coverage but also hurts us in defending the run. We couldn't stop the run in the 4th quarter when we knew it was coming. Our secondary, which is supposed to be the strength of the team, still was a non-factor. The last point is something that is a real concern, as that group was supposed to be the strength of the D. Other than Crawford's pass break up (which was borderline PI), were there any plays made on the ball?
I think that we are looking at a defense that is still vulnerable to being carved up as the season goes on. The system looks to be exactly the same. There wasn't more aggressiveness and attacking, even with an experienced secondary behind the front 7. Our D certainly wasn't the reason we lost, but I didn't come out of the game feeling like we could rely on it going forward.
