Cross one off the list - Butch to retire

I don’t think his ego allows for it. Not saying that’s a bad thing or good thing, I just don’t think he would accept something like that. Just my opinion.
I'd say it depends on how much he loves football. I don't know about here, but I can see him contributing somewhere because he has a lot to share and can't walk away from it.

That’s a fair point. Pride may not let him do it here, but he may do it somewhere else.

You're god**** right I was there. "How much kids loved the U back then"? Like when LaVar Arrington was scared out of picking Miami by Chuckie Amato's secret FedEx package of articles related to the Marlin Barnes murder?

Look, man, I try to be respectful of your opinions, I know you are a fan. But you are mixing and matching metaphors. You are trying to empty your bowels on Butch's COACHING by acting like his RECRUITING was some incredibly easy job.

But break this down into parts. Recruiting is not just about "convincing a guy to pick your college". If that was the case, then Eric "Otter" Stratton would have been the best football coach ever. Butch had to make the most out of his limited scholarships, which meant nailing a "hit rate" on his recruits that was almost unprecedented. I don't know how many millions of times it needs to be repeated, but the system that Butch and Pete developed to scout, compile information, and track recruits across multiple years was unbelievably successful and fruitful. And the DEVELOPMENT of those players followed. You MISTAKENLY try to compress and minimize all of those efforts into one word, "recruiting", and then dismiss it all because "kids loved the U back then".

As for Butch's COACHING, which had its strengths and weaknesses, you act as if "coaching" cannot (or should not) be impacted by a less-than-full roster. So, as I have previously challenged, feel free to name any college coach who is FINE with a partial roster. Who relishes practicing and playing games with a partial roster. Who is not disproportionately impacted by injuries when playing with a partial roster. The reality is that Butch was doing a GREAT job of coaching and developing the players he had for ALL years he led Miami, but the OUTCOME OF GAMES was certainly pre-ordained when you play 11 to 12 games WITH A PARTIAL ROSTER.

But I'll set aside all of your incorrect OPINIONS if you would just be honest ON THE FACTS.

"He didn’t win a **** thing while he had them. He was average to awful until he had a full roster."

UNTRUE.

In 1995, we finished TIED FOR FIRST IN THE BIG EAST. Self-bowl-ban.
In 1996, we finished TIED FOR FIRST IN THE BIG EAST.
In 1998, we finished TIED FOR SECOND IN THE BIG EAST.
In 1999, we finished SECOND IN THE BIG EAST.
In 2000, we finished FIRST IN THE BIG EAST.

That means, in 5 of 6 years that Butch coached, Miami finished first or second in the Big East.

Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.

And, YES, I would have preferred to beat East Carolina twice instead of losing twice. I would have wanted to have scored one extra TD against VaTech in 1995 and 1998. Everyone already knows how I feel about the Chafie Fields game, and I would have loved it if we had a couple of extra minutes on the game clock against Washington in 2000.

But 3 firsts and 2 seconds in 6 years is pretty impressive, when weighed against 31 lost scholarships.
I would also add that the refs did us no favors during those years.

Never got a chance to finish what he started here but he did get his sweet revenge. What better way to retire than to grab a gig on some sports network doing college analyst stuff and hanging with Jimmy in Key West in the offseason? Should have let that FIU thing go years ago.
Jimmy resides in Islamorada

Make Miami great again!
This can happen easier than you think.

Fire James and Diaz.

Hire Cristobal. He is a great recruiter and offensive line coach. He will bring the tough physicality needed to compete with the SEC and Big 10 in big games. Our roster will be stacked with more talent than all but maybe three teams. This would likely make us a consistent playoff team.

Have Mario bring Alex Mirabal with him. He is another great offensive line coach. This will solve our biggest issue on offense. Retain the other offensive coaches. They have done a better job than this board generally gives them credit.

Hire Butch Davis as his Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. Butch is another great recruiter and one of the best in evaluating and developing talent. Keep TRob. Butch can pick the rest, including possibly hiring Kevin Patrick to coach dline and Mike Barrow to coach linebackers.

Hire Alonzo as the AD.

Are you trying to tell me legend Bortch Davies who's only lost less than 3 games in season once in 15 years is being fired again? Why would UM settle for just Christobal when we can have 2 FIU failures for the price of one? With a combined W/L record of 147-140 how could we go wrong? We're talking about being the PINNACLE of mediocrity here folks. Once in a life time chance.

You forgot to add Ray Lewis as linebackers coach, Ed Reed as DB coach, and Ken Dorsey as OC.

Great, let's hire Nevin Shapiro as dorm monitor.

That has to be it. The retirement talk must’ve just been bullshlt from the athletic department at FIU, he had no intention to retire. They were probably trying to get him to retire, but he didn’t choose that. He wants to get his buyout money I’m guessing. I believe you’re right.
This is much closer to the truth of what's going on. Butch has played this intelligently.

Would Pete Garcia appease us if he was AD? I don't know much about him, other than hearing how Butch loved him when he was here in the early 2000s.
Garcia is retiring too...it was announced on Wed. Looks like FIU is doing a house cleaning.

Cross one off the list? ****, I’d rather keep Manny than have Butch. And that’s not an endorsement to keep Manny.

I thought after Diaz gets fired he would be a DC but with FIU job open that would be a great place for him as a HC there would be no expectations.

I won’t judge Butch off FIU, Mario has taught me that. Butch did win the most games in a season while there, but FIU is definitely a bottom feeder G5 job. I’m not sure who can succeed there.

With that being said, I couldn’t think of Butch getting another coaching gig, b/c perception is reality. Perception is he got fired from UNC due to cheating, despite what came out after the fact. He then couldn’t get a decent P5 or G5 gig, goes to FIU & after seeing progress, have steeply declined, winning 1 game in 2 seasons. His best bet is to retire, b/c at his age, w/ these two baggage under his name, he’s not going to sniff another coaching gig, unless it maybe a FCS job.

At this point, I’m not sure why he would even want the headache. I’m sure he’s got plenty of money stashed away unless he’s got some vices we don’t know about, or a bunch of women on the side he has to pay off. And I doubt he has any of that so I don’t get it.
