Cristobal was Way Better Than Lanning at Oregon

Yeah, imagine getting 17-21 points put on you quick, then getting smashed with the run game while the other team is trying to catch their breath. Next thing you know its 31-10 late third and all you got left is explosive plays to catch up.

Not a boxing guy but kind of like getting hit with handful of haymakers, other dude is disoriented and then gets pummeled with body shots. Before you know it, it's too late.

As Michael Jerome Irvin says -- hope...dictates effort. So if you buzz a team early (score a few knockdowns in boxing parlance) and jump them, a lot of teams will flat out fold a bit. And at that point, their effort and intensity will wane. And then running the ball becomes a bit easier

Bill Walsh believed this. He never ''established the running game'', he established points --- and THEN ran the ball late and games, while allowing his pass rushers play freely in the 4th quarter. That was his general game plan

Ah got it..I think the caveman labels were kinda overblown if you look at his history. He just hired a bad coordinator with Arroyo and a solid but limited one with Moorehead, then another bad coordinator with gattis, who i think was gonna be his hire at oregon if he stayed there.

I think what everyone is describing with Mario is just the natural growth of a coach. Oregon was his first p4 job. His style at Miami still has the same foundation as it was at Oregon but with mistakes you get growth
This era is better for Mario because guys with no QB development expertise can just go grab elite QBs.

The Mario Canes have had better QB play on average than Riley USC which would be shocking and improbable in the old recruiting and transfer era.

It is harder to portal in elite trenches talent so the Mario/Mirabal combo is now better added value than a QB development guru guy.

Riley is no stranger to transfer QB’s either although he typically has them for more than one year.

Mario's culture is "the standard is the standard" type ****.

No cutting corners. A hundred percent business every time a player steps on that practice field or enters the weight room. Players need to be all in or eventually they'll need to get out.

Lanning, on the other hand, is a back slapper and a bull *******. He'll tell a recruit whatever it takes to get the signature. He'll let half-assed stuff slide because he values talent and being friends with his player.

Here's Lanning yesterday referencing the loss at Okahoma State:

"It really looks very similar to what it felt like on the field," Lanning said. "We did not perform at any level that was winning football. ... Sometimes you've got to learn hard lessons through hard performances, and this is -- you know, this is by far the worst performance that we've had since I've been here."

This was a non-conference game in September. A embarassing defeat for sure but not necessarily that consequential in and of itself.

Meanwhile, Oregon trailed 34-8 at halftime against Ohio State in the CFP quarterfinals two seasons and 35-7 at halftime against Indiana in the CFP semifinals last season.

Both those blowout playoff losses (against teams with which the Ducks had comparable talent) were much, much worse. Two straight years on the big stage and Lanning's team was completely unprepared.

Did he or his players learn from those hard lessions? Apparently not.

The boy is a con artist who hustled his way into working for Saban, Mike Norvell (lol) and Smart because he could get after it on the recruiting trail

The utah games aren’t even top5 worst losses imo. The worst one is the blown game vs 6-5 arizona st when they were ranked #6
Here's the rub. Better roster, better ranking. Same beating physically more than once. Slice it how you want. All I'm saying it's not like Mario was know for big game wins. That's a fact. I love his maturation to the coach he is. He took his lumps, help he still does. The culture at Miami is 100 times more intense and serious. Took a few years but to me he took all his negatives and turned them into a positive. One school was beating down his door. Lucky it was Miami.
