I'm lukewarm on the prospect of Mario.

He will at least make us respectable again and hopefully he's gotten all of his gameday blunders out of the way but I'm not sold on the offense. I know that the defense will be solid bringing in some elite 5* talents and OL is his specialty so I have no concerns there. Talk me down from the ledge regarding skill positions and the plain vanilla offense he's been running on the offensive side of the ball.

We've got two studs in TVD/Garcia and what I saw out of Oregon with Herbert scares the fvck out of me.

I'm no recruiting expert but it also seems like they are NOT loading the boat with elite skill position offensive talent .... mostly defense and OL.

I understand and share your concern. I don’t think anyone can know the answer until/if he gets here. I tend to think he’s been around enough smart football coaches to understand he needs to mold his offense to the talent in the area, which would mean a high powered offense like Lashlee sometimes runs. But anybody making any definitive statements at this point is just guessing.

This is why LCE prefers Lane over Mario. If Mario’s going with the same offense, that’ll take a lot more time to get up and running and we’ll win less games in the interim whereas Lane will literally be plug and play/win quickly with our players and what he does as an offensive coach.

I believe the one who fixed the OL quicker will be the one who wins more games
I have no horses on this race..I like them both but neither will do much with current OL affairs

How so? Lashlee came in and improved our offense day 1 with a transfer and no spring. It’s no secret Lane is one of best college offensive coaches but this is far fetched to believe another high quality OC can’t come in and be successful with TVD.

He has had some of the following offensive coordinators...

Joe Moorhead. He's good.
Marcus Arroyo...now a head coach.
Scott Satterfield...now a head coach in the P5
James Coley...on again, off again P5 offensive coordinator.

He can find an OC to do the job.

His offensive lines have been good and they play well on both sides of the LOS at Oregon.

Unless it's Kiffin, the next HC woild he wise to at least consider keeping Lashlee around. The O isn't without its faults but we struck gold with TVD and Lashlee has shown a willingness to adjust the offense to suit his skillset.

We've seen QB's like Kaaya and KW struggle in part due to a revolving door at OC. TVD has immense potential, and the O is putting plenty of points on the board as-is. Bring in some plug and play starters along the OL via the portal and its only going to get better.

That’s his opinion as I recall from a post yesterday but I don’t have his photographic memory so I’d have to direct that to @Liberty City El.

I think it’s based on Mario doing what he’s always done on that side of the ball. I don’t know that he won’t have a Saban moment and change to a spread offense. He might and that would be ideal.

If Mario is coming in, Lashlee would keep a certain type of offense that will work here now as opposed to having to go the slow total remake and rebuild route.

I think I go back and forth daily

Part of me goes back to the old if he can recruit then he won’t have trouble finding skill players in Miami

But I don’t think it’s that simple either

Last class their WR haul blows out Miami’s. And it’s not even close. Plus they got TMac from Servite coming in another border line 5 star guy.

TE they’ve been snagging 4 stars

RB Miami has them beat

This is what happens to me as well and it seems like we’re not alone. We’d all feel better seeing Mario come in and go with an offense that better suits us than what’s being run in “Lumberjack Land” to quote @Ispyin

There’s obviously pluses and minuses with any candidate. I’d prefer a CEO type that can competently manage the day to day operation of the team, set the vision, and hire great people to help carry out that vision. Ultimately, it’s about the people the new HC brings in from the coordinators to his personal assistant (preferably a 10).

My gut tells me Mario. There’s surely some game day red flags but he’s clean as a whistle, demands excellence and accountability, has enough experience to manage the task at hand, is an excellent recruiter, and would stay for a while (can you spell stability).

Lane is the **** hire but gives me the heebie jeebies due to his past indiscretions and his tendency to bolt for other opportunities. No doubt he’s an O wizard but can he play defense? Risk versus reward?

Aranda is a proven D commodity but obviously a short timer as a HC. Another risk versus reward.

I just don’t want to be stuck looking for a head coach again in two years. I really hope to think he hires an up and coming OC and handles as a CEO.

I support the premise of this thread. I posted similar comments in other threads. I really don’t think it matters who Mario hires as OC—he wants a simple, run first offense built around a stout OL. Moorhead was considered to be a very good OC and had great numbers at Penn State. But his offense at Oregon looks very similar to the offense Arroyo was running there. I don’t think a run heavy offense dependent upon an elite OL is a good fit for our recruiting base. I’d prefer an air raid system—especially with our current QB room.
