Cory Johnson 2014 JUCO NT mid-yr highlights

It is my belief that CJ and Pelon would put us right with Oregon, TAMU, FSU and OSU as the prohibitive favorites to win the National Championship next year.

They would give us the best defense in the country.

You think TAMpon is a favorite next year? Did you see their defense? What about if Manziel leaves?

aTm will be well regarded early on. Their defense has a ton of young talent on it and, while they will struggle this year, will be much improved next year...sound familiar?

As for Manziel, I think if he goes early the whole team takes a major snap back. However, they bring in the #1 ranked QB and the pollsters will love to hype him up in Sumlin's offense.

I am going to STRONGLY disagree unless Manziel stays. Even if he stays it will still be EXTREMELY difficult.

Stuckey will be the nt next year. He is already 310 and he is a strong run stuffing type of dt. He is enrolling early and the staff will have 6-7 months to get him up to 320-325 like porter who was 312 last year. Johnson will likely play the robinson roll he is 295. Pelon can play the pierre role as the dt/de. Valentine and jenkins will play nt and moten will play pierre role.

If that is the way it shakes out I still have a problem with it. I like Stuckey and absolutely think he is a NT but we need more behind him

Stuckey/Moore/King/Valentine/Jenkins isn't good enough IMO. Almost impossible for a true FR to make an impact at NT. Moore and King to me are small niche rotation guys.

I'm not that worried about the Pierre spot since I think Kamalu and/or Hamilton can do a nice job as a backup (like Robinson) in that role. A JUCO like Pelon would be a nice addition. Moten would be a perfect guy to groom behind those guys. Pierre/Pelon/Kamalu or Hamilton/Moten would be a nice rotation.

IT is pretty much impossible to have 2 stud nose tackles in college football. The only team that consistently seems to stack them is Alabama. Even NFL teams struggle to find personnel at that position. We need one guy to be the main NT and then a bunch of guys that can contribute behind him.

Cory Johnson is committed to Kentucky, but he plans to visit Miami and Arizona State officially before signing. He actually graduates this month. His visit to Miami is currently scheduled for Dec. 22.

@JEdwar247

Wait, his visit is Dec. 22? Wouldn't he start school pretty soon thereafter? Not sure if that's bad b/c it seems late or good b/c we get last crack. This guy could potentially make a real difference for our team next year. He'd also give Valentine a year buffer to develop at a normal rate. Even if we don't get Cory, we need someone "like" him.

By the way, Cory Johnson reminds me of Randy Starks' attributes.

Its universally desired by coaches to get last visit. So there's that.

Give me C Johnson and Pelon, plus what we already have, and I wont give two ***** about Cook, Lane, Rudolph, etc....
Add in Moten also.

Even when the last visit is 2 week before you move to the city and enroll in the school? I'm all for it if it gets him here.

To think before the Valentine verbal I and few fans or most thought to worry about DT. Now looking at OP and Wilkerson in the pros and Johnson here man oh man does AG know what hes doing at DT. I want this kid but Im not worried about the future for this position anymore. To me this kid is the most immediate impact player next year for us....hes a stud that AG found and hopefully his loyalty to this staff resurfaces and is to much to pass up when its all said and done.

Don't be a dummy Cory. Choose wisely.

The mere fact that he committed to Kuntucky makes me question his intelligence and will to be the best. Who the **** would ever commit to Kuntucky when they have a UM offer? It's absurd. Hopefully, he'll come to his senses.

My God would this guy be a perfect fit for us and a perfect situation for his future draft prospects.

Cory, you stand to make far more money if you come here, play on a 2014 defense packed to the brim with talent, and are drafted to do exactly what you'll be asked to do here: thereby lowering the risk for an NFL franchise and increasing your draft stock ($).

Let's do this.

How do you project Cory Johnson fitting in along our scheme? You alluded to it in the bold above and with the Randy Starks comparison, but I'd appreciate it if you'd spell it out. I love his talent but have struggled to put a finger on exactly how I think he would best be utilized.

Yeah, I saw him slipping a lot of blocks and that is exactly what LuRob had a falling out with the staff about.

He also showed some raw strength, but I wonder if he'd be better used as a nose or a 3 technique.

Robinson had issues with not following his assignments and abandoning his gap. The only thing the fans remember on plays like that is the tackle for loss that they see. All the other times when he's not doing his job and a RB blows right through a wide open gap they just blamed it on D'Onofrio and his busted scheeeeeeeme.

Many JUCO guys do that especially if their recruitment heats up late so it's not a big deal especially with the relationship the staff has with him and his family from the past

TX A&M'S defense looked horrible...i mean it wasnt one guy on their d i think that i would take on ours...not one would start. They made Bama's tired offense look legit...an offense va tech who is void of talent at spots corralled fairly easy. In other words they aint winning sh&t

I think Kevin Sumlin is a pretty good offensive mind, in fact probably one of the best in the college game. As for defense, he leaves a lot to be desired. I think they are going to try to win in the SEC the non-traditional way (playing defense and pounding the ball), don't know if it will work unless they have a Manziel there.

Theres a reason why this guy committed to KY. Call me Chicken Little but I dont see us flipping CJohnson. I think this is a guy that is gonna play us in the end like buddy who committed to Baylor last year who was married who came on the last minute visit.. Cant remember his name. But we all thought we would flip him. In the end, he stayed in Waco. Like we all have been saying..Why commit to KY? And so early? Not getting my hopes up.

Lets try to reel in CPelon, Moten, and another "waiver wire" special. Get Moore and Kamalu in another year of UTough and see where the cards lay.

it's a bit of a stretch to say prohibitive favorite for the natl title when you're breaking in a new QB, and plugging in two JUCO DTs.

If he comes on the visit he has scheduled (12/22) then we have a chance. This visit will also be his last visit. I am sure the staff will recruit him till he reports to a school, I am sure they will tell him that at least 2 DTs (Porter and Robinson) are gone after this season. Let us also not forget that he was recruited by Al Golden at Temple and committed there before JUCO.

As for committing to Kentucky, he may be one of the best players on the team NOW. They are garbage and will be garbage. They will finish the year with 4 wins at most.

Is the player your thinking of Terrell Brooks?

We need at least 1 more grown man (JUCO or 5th year guy) to play NT for 2014, it would be a great fit. Probably the most important position on this defense and one of the most hard to find.

Currently we have Stuckey/Moore/Valentine/Jenkins at that spot for next year. Maybe King as well. That is very worrisome but I'm sure the staff is all over this. The Renfrow pick up this year was beyond big.

DT Chickillo part time, Pierre, probably Moten, Moore, Hamilton, King. NT Jenkins,Valentine, Stuckey and we will land someone either Johnson or 5th year guy..

Kid HAD to have gotten paid. Why in gawd's name else would anyone commit to play football at Keeeeeentucky?

Maybe he can give them a refund?
