With these threads about our best players , Cortez Kernnedy what a load he was for some reason he just seems to be left out of the stud conversation , well not this time :)

Just figured I keep this Cane studs name alive, yes I'd put him on our all time D front seven would anyone here disagree ?

Only played 2yrs...Unvelievable Talent...But would I put him starting over Jerome or Sapp at DT??....No....Better than Maryland??..Yeah...

I think Cortez was every bit of the player as Jerome was. It is at least a conversation.
Not at UM....I can't put a Guy who Spent only 2yrs at UM...Over Jerome or Sapp...in the Pros I put him over Jerome (only because of his untimely Death) but he's Neck and Neck with Sapp in the NFL....And I Love Tez....I do put him comfortably ahead of Maryland.

We have had so many stars at so many positions it’s hard to rank them. Jerome and Sapp probably our top two with Tez and Big Russ right behind. All four were great players both at UM and the league. 2 HOFs another guy with HOF potential prior to his untimely death and Big Russ being the first pick on the NFL draft and multiple SB rings with the Boys.

Maryland was Notorious for taking plays off at UM...It wasn't a Huge deal...because of that vaunted UM DL those yrs..
Jimmy liked him enough to draft him as the first pick in the NFL draft. Big Russ was the team leaders on that defense and was highly respected by every room and coach on that team. Only reason he got to UM was a scholarship opened up after NSD because of a prop 48 kid not making grades. Russ Signed a few days later. The only reason Jimmy took him #1 is Rocket Ismael went to Canada. Rocket was the Boys original target.

1A Sapp
1B Jerome
2 Tez
3 Maryland....after that it gets alittle fuzzy with Vince....etc...

Back in 98 I was sitting with Butch at Hecht (I'll never forget because He was holding a Kids Camp at Greentree) and this same discussion came up about who was the best Interior DLman he had seen at UM. Since he coached Jerome...and a plethora of other DL Greats, I immediately thought he'd say Jerome...since he never really coached Sapp etc...But without ANY hesitation he said Sapp was the best...kinda caught me off guard...I remember Erickson said that he'd have to take Sapp outta practices, so the Off could move the ball past the LOS.....

Good group! OP is correct, Tez doesn’t get enough credit here and probably has to do with a short UM career. He was dominant. I feel the younger guys here were cheated not getting a chance to see these players from the 80s and 90s in action. As you kids say “savage” these dudes were savage!

Longevity (2yrs) is the ONLY reason Tez is #2...nothing to do with Talent....

Yep. Sapp was a freak athletically. He was almost inserted at TE when he first arrived! Gino begged Coach E. Looking at him you wouldn’t think. The dude dunked in an intramural BB game, boys from the team lost it.

Hate him as a Human...but Good Lord..on the field it wasn't fair...

When you have to put the likes of Kenard Lang...Kenny Holmes...Pat Riley and others down the list...that tells ya all you need to know...

I used to Pick Butch's mind all the time....
I Loved talking Defensive FB with him. He always was Happy to share his thoughts on whatever subject we were talking about. And you could tell he enjoyed reminiscing...I don't think people realize how much he Loved UM.
He Absolutely Loathed the BOT...except Paul Di'mare..who he's still close friends with. He's also still close to Stu Miller...I won't throw any BOT names out there...but there was a few that simply didn't like Butch..and the feeling was mutual.

In this very Pic we were talking Defensive FB...for a solid hr...my Late Wife took the Pic...it was the day before the UCLA game.
He was so accommodating...and treated my Wife like Gold...
