Corey Heatherman: Year in Review by the Numbers

With Ole Miss on the horizon I wanted to circle back on a thread I started last year when Heatherman was hired

Ole Miss is the #1 offense we will play all season so the timing was on my mind

One thing I usually look at with DCs is how their defense does compared to the other teams average

There’s no perfect stats out there but always found this exercise handy and Heatherman overwhelmingly held teams under their season averages last year

So how has he done so far this year leading up to the toughest test of the season?

(Spoiler: this **** is absurd)

OSU 423 332 33 14 -91/19

Takeaways:

Average -109 yards per game
Average -17 points per game

We faced SIX Top 30 offenses in those games:

Average -102 yards per game
Average -20 points per game

Read that again

-20 points per game against the top 6 offenses we faced

We allowed ONE team to gain more yards than their average the entire season (VT without Scott and Thomas)

ONE team gained over 400 yards (FSU had 203 in the 4th quarter)

ZERO teams scored more points than their average

SEVEN teams averaged over 100 yards less than their average

ELEVEN teams averaged over 10 points less than their average

Whatever happens against Ole Miss this dude is without question the Broyles Award Winner this year and should be absurdly compensated this offseason

If Heathermans agent wants to compensate me I’ll send him my email
This is bananas and fantastic research, you maniac.

Even in our two losses, we were able to keep SMU and UL below their average. Yes, the margin wasn’t as large as many of the others, but it goes to show that Hetherman’s defense will always be consistent and have us in the game, without fail. That is key.

this is your best post of the year

Outside of the numbers I think if we get up by 2 scores early they pack it in and start portaling at halftime.
Chambliss is a gamer and crazy talented

But still it seems every team we face now with Scott back and fully healthy is on their heels from how violent and aggressive we are

Cool matchup on paper

Toney is due for a big game
Yeah and he won’t have Caleb Downs shadowing him all over the field again. Downs is that guy, and he’s older and more physically developed than Toney. But being that guy means there are not more of you and Ole Miss doesn’t have one.

Thanks. Guy has been amazing.

Bit off topic but I charted something similar (which I deleted by accident) with Ole Miss's defense against P4 foes and IIRC their defense gave up more points than their opponents averaged against P4 teams except for Miss St and South Carolina.

Their offense can be very explosive, but at times will get behind the chains and hand the ball back to us. A lot depends on what type of game we try and play. Do we look to control the pace and limit possessions, or be aggressive? I’d hope for the latter and take some risks ourselves. Not sure we do, but…

**** of a stat pull. Good stuff man.

Ole Miss 490ypg 37ppg

Vs Miami 398 27

Ole Miss was only held to less yards ONE time this season (against UGA the first time)

The were held under 30 THREE times this season (they won both other games against LSU/WAZZOU)

I think we all know this coulda been a lot more of a beating if we held on to some INTs but that’s neither here nor there

Thanks. Was a super performance by the defense. There was 1 bad run fit on the long TD, but Ole Miss didn't scrimmage in the red zone until 8:00 left in the 4th quarter.

Our offense did a lot of self inflicted stuff but they definitely helped the guys on defense out by grinding the **** out of the clock

Ole Miss averaged 6.63 yards per play (on quick check) and they average 6.68 on the season so the ability to keep their offense on the sideline definitely helped here

70+ on one play doesn’t help but…

Yes the time of possession was important.

Ole Miss also moved the ball with ease after Lucas got the b.s. targeting call. Averaged 8.4 ypp on their final 14 plays and scored 10 points. They went after Antoine a lot - whether in man or in his area in zone, and had a fair amount of success.

Outside of after Lucas targeting and the run fit bust (pause) they averaged 4.6 ypp on 45 plays, which is really, really good against that offense.

Good job Hetherman. One more time you psycho
