With Ole Miss on the horizon I wanted to circle back on a thread I started last year when Heatherman was hired

Ole Miss is the #1 offense we will play all season so the timing was on my mind

One thing I usually look at with DCs is how their defense does compared to the other teams average

There’s no perfect stats out there but always found this exercise handy and Heatherman overwhelmingly held teams under their season averages last year

So how has he done so far this year leading up to the toughest test of the season?

(Spoiler: this **** is absurd)

ND 459 314 42 24 -145/18

TAM 445 326 34 3 -119/31

OSU 423 332 33 14 -91/19

Takeaways:

Average -109 yards per game
Average -17 points per game

We faced SIX Top 30 offenses in those games:

Average -102 yards per game
Average -20 points per game

Read that again

-20 points per game against the top 6 offenses we faced

We allowed ONE team to gain more yards than their average the entire season (VT without Scott and Thomas)

ONE team gained over 400 yards (FSU had 203 in the 4th quarter)

ZERO teams scored more points than their average

SEVEN teams averaged over 100 yards less than their average

ELEVEN teams averaged over 10 points less than their average

Whatever happens against Ole Miss this dude is without question the Broyles Award Winner this year and should be absurdly compensated this offseason

If Heathermans agent wants to compensate me I’ll send him my email

Just amazing that we held every single team under their scoring average. Especially when beating a lot of ranked teams.

Keeping these 2 coordinators for as many seasons as possible maybe the most important recruiting Mario/Rad ever do.
This is a great point. I genuinely wonder that if coordinator compensation creeps closer to 8 figures, do guys really want to shoulder the burden of roster management/talent acquisition in this age? Isn't it a luxury to coach under Mario and be handed the tools every year?

Yeah they won’t score more than 20 on us. And as long as our normal offense shows up we win comfortably. (I would love for our offense to use their trash D to get going tho)

Posted this in another thread.
1 full yard per rush better than Indiana.

That’s sick, but we have to wait one more season before giving this guy the world- *see Lance Guidry*. The year before, we have a top rated defense and then he lost some big time guys and next season we flopped on defense! That was on Mario and Guidry, because ain’t no way IN **** we should’ve gone into last season with the DB’s we had! I’m saying all this to say that the guys we have back there on the back end and the backers make it easier on the DC. Especially after he finally decided to let the CBs press. Had he done that in the first half of the season, Bain and Mesi would’ve had 15 plus sacks each! One more thing.. People are talking about Ole Miss’ offense saying their quick passing game is going to get us.. However, we are not playing the corners back like we were VS Louisville and SMU.

I’ll see if I can find the thread but he also did the same thing last year at Minnesota

Not this level of ridiculous but he held almost every team under their averages despite being on a very mediocre team IIRC

Most of them were held 100 under on rushing: fsu, nd, Pitt, atm, OSU

If we can take away the run, it will force their QB to have to pick us apart. He can do that but I expect the defense to bend not break. That still means Ole Miss will score 21-24 just due to the kicker who has a leg for 60 yarders.

Ole Miss runs a 3-3-5 which is similar to FSU and SMU. If our OL continues to play like they have the last 4 games, we out perform on the ground keeping their offense on the sidelines. We want TOP to be 40/20 in our favor.

If we hold the trend Ole Miss gains about 400 yards and scores 18 points

We hold them to under 20 and yeah it’s a wrap

Kill them all, let them sort themselves out on the couch come Jan 19th. That being said, this defense is a Cane defense thru and thru. Let Heatherman COOK!

How many of the other teams had kickers with legs from 60? Now I do think if we get up 14-17, they will be forced to go for it on 4th which could keep their point total down.

I also see a tempo offense and we all know Miami has gotta gassed at times vs uptempo offenses. This is when our offense has to do its part and stay on the field!

If we can hold them to trend at 18, we win 31-18.

This is a fair point, but it holds better if we were a top 15+/- defense.
At this time, we're one of the 2 best defenses in the nation. Arguably thee best.

Personnel got us on par with the big boys.
Coaching got us to the top.
