Eh, I think it can be a combination of both. I wouldn’t say Duke or Pitt or Syracuse have better players on defense and yet they gave UNC more trouble than we did.You know it's an emotional fan board when people are claiming that everything comes down to coaching. Like the #1 team in the country doesn't have coaches who know how to teach high school-level tackling.
It's okay to say sometimes that the players just aren't that good.
lol listen…coaches coach and players play..if the same things keep on happing it’s ether you are coaching it or allowing it…..great players will make a lot of coaches look good….when that’s not the case can the coach help his players look better….
This is depressing to readI don’t know if he’s good, bad, or drunk. But, the data says he is playing entirely too much Cover 3. And, while the narrative seems to be that ol’ salty Petrino put on a master class tonight, what is the evidence? He threw to his TE and backs.
Nothing crazy or fancy. He identified our weaknesses - LBs in coverage, a Frosh safety who is getting crazy snaps but sometimes confused, late breaking safeties, Corners who intentionally bail into the ether - and just called plays for them. What he did really was a lesson in self-discipline. Those Safety blitzes are stale. The simulated pressure is predictable. And, that QB had the night of his life because of us; not himself.
Db injuries? What does he need, an All Pro DBackfield? UNC’s QB had almost 3x the incompletions against Syracuse. How many of Cuse’s defenders see the field in our jerseys?
Corn Elder would be huge for this defense right nowThat secondary was way better and were phenomenal tacklers
Robert Burns, former Cane, said it on Friday on Pete's podcast that Belichick would target the middle of the field with the RBs and TE. Film is out on his tendencies.......I just think that Heatherman is predictable on defense, OC's know his tendencies
i dont think they have a te as good as thurman. they have better backs , ol though...im not impressed by their wideouts but hey if guys are running scott free anyway they should have a gameND is going to attack us the very same way. Why wouldn’t they? They have all the same pieces with way better personnel. We can stand at the podium and preach “execution”’or the coaches can be accountable. Change up the fronts, make ND process some more and see what happens.
What should concern you the most is the tackling. It’s horrific. It’s almost impossible to get off the field when every 3 yard pass turns into a 10 yard gain bc the first guy never brings down the ball carrier.
We are in the elite category when it comes to stopping pass plays over 20 yards, but are **** near 100th in allowing pass plays over 10.
Was saying it last night…Film don’t lie.
Neither does the best edge duo we’ve ever had here. It’s the reason I was “down” on the defense all summer. Although I didn’t think it’d be this bad. But a lot of people don’t understand, if you can create constant pressure with 4, calling defense is literally easy. It just is. The secondary is awful but all of this is predicated on not being able to get pressure with 4. 5 and 99 are insanely strong and never get moved off their spots in the run game, but they don’t get a ton of pressure on the middle. And Lightfoot has been good, but the edge group is MILES worse than last year. How could they not be, the two we had last year were literally the best we’ve ever had.
The DL can’t generate enough pressure. He’s not really able to generate it in other ways. We can’t cover anyone with our nickels and backers. And we are poor tacklers. All that adds up to a mediocre defense. Teams know how to attack us and they have the time to do it.
I’m almost inclined to say let’s start playing some odd fronts and get more DBs on the field. If nothing other than getting different looks out there. Sacrifice something in the run game to help these kids cover. Again, yet another team who did **** in the run game, their backs had 21 carries for 68 yards. But it doesn’t matter much if you’re gonna let Billy Edwards get 10 yards every time he throws it.
28/34 for 341 yards is flat embarrassing. Thank god for our offense, I’d bet a QB with those numbers wins about 98% of their games. Give up something in the run game if you have to and just get on the edges. 10 yards a throw to that group is gross. Tight end and backs ate our lunch.
