Connecting the Dots

Call me pessimistic after 15+ years of ineptitude, but I just do not see Cristobal or Kiffin choosing to come here. I’d actually be shocked. I have the full faith and confidence in this university to implement half measures with the next AD and coach that yield middling results.

No one is making the leap. I think the consensus view is UM will try to make the job as attractive as possible (firing James, making a commitment to sports, large budget, etc) and make an above market offer to Cristobal. Ball is in his court. Many reasons to say no. If he declines, UM will move to other candidates (my guess is Stoops would be #1).

Thing to keep in mind for Mario is though is UM is going to try and give him everything he could possibly want and a clean slate to rebuild the program. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity as I don't think we'll ever see the school push reset and clean out the Athletic Dept. ever again.
Should have fired Strawley too. That would have really showed commitment.

No need. She is going to leave anyways. Why get feminists all riled up and tweeting "UM is firing Strawley because the sexists don't think a woman should be in an athletic department!" Not worth the PR headache when it's already known her bags are packed.

Cristobal was vetted by Miami in 2010 and 2015. There were moves to bring him in 2018, and he was very interested. He’s kept his connections with former players and knows the landscape down here very well. If he wants this job we’d conclude the search pretty quickly and he’d be inked to a deal in 48 hours at most. IF (and it’s a big IF) he was interested he wouldn’t be hired until January probably. Could also decide to leave Oregon before their bowl game. Hard to say but the point is that he’s a real candidate and is #1 on the list.
I'm all for Mario. Would be a no-brainer.

But what happens if Oregon makes a Natty run? They're 3 wins away from being in the CFP. If that happens, doesn't Nike / Oregon make him an offer he can't refuse?

We can't have him as our only candidate - especially if he suddenly becomes a long shot.

There are probably less than 7 really good experienced AD candidates in the country right now.

Not sure we’re going to be able to pull one of them. If we can, awesome. I’m all for it.

If not, experience is far less important than competence.
And they are all at large universities with huge athletic departments, except for somebody like Mack Rhoades.

Idk why Mario would leave Oregon. Even with a new AD, he has plenty of resources at Oregon with less scrutiny and lower expectations.

I hope it happens but I can't see why anyone would make that leap right now just as a reality
Have you tried cafe con leche in Eugene?

I’d prefer Mario stubbing his toe one more game. That qb is capable of going off the rails any game ( in a bad way).
But we would have to deal with porsters who will analyze the loss and use it as justification not to hire him. Fvck em... Whatever it takes to get Mario, sign me up.

He’d also have the longest leash ever. Which may not be a benefit to us but if you wanna jump here he’d be given at least 5 years I’d imagine.

Interested to see when Miami asks OR for consent to talk to him. Mario is on a direct line to the playoffs. He will not want to create a distraction for his team. I don’t think there’s any way he’s going to interview with Miami, much less accept an offer, while OR is still in the playoff hunt. Lots of back channeling I guess.

No one expects the ADs at every school to hire coaches that will come in and win championships. Plenty of things beyond the coach determine who is capable of winning it all. More than 7 ADs who are currently employed make solid coaching hires across their sports.

Yurachek got the Arkansas job in 2017. Since then he's hired Eric Musselman who made an elite 8 in his first full season and Sam Pittman who is 7-3 in year 2 in the SEC West. Yurachek was second in command at Houston beforehand. So competency and experience is all around. Just gotta look for it and not default to the nearest Miami guy.

The vast majority of ADs are snake oil salesman who worked the good old boy network to get a promotion.

I’m not saying there isn’t any young talent. I’m saying it’s not easy to find it… the established guys are hard to get… and the university admin doesn’t exactly have a very good track record.
