Another week in the books for college football -- are we almost halfway through already? -- some thoughts on week 5 of college football...

- OK, so it's going to take a unreal game to unseat what we saw in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night between Bama and UGA. The Tide held onto to win 41-34, and based on what I saw, I wouldn't drop either team from the top 5. You can switch their rankings, but neither squad deserves to drop out. I expect both to be in the playoffs in December

There had been some talk of just how important this game was with a 12-team playoffs. It's a legitimate question. There is a chance that they could meet 3 times this season (SEC playoffs, national playoffs), but honestly, this possible dynamic did seem to impact the intensity or importance of this game

- So Georgia has lost only three games since 2021 -- all three to Bama. It reminds me of when Oklahoma from 1985 to 1987 went 33-0 versus everybody in the country who wasn't Miami, while they went 0-3 versus the Jimmy Johnson 'Canes.

- Right now, you could make an argument that Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams will make strong arguments by the end of the year to make some All-American teams. They are true game breakers and future first round(top 10) draft choices.

- Colorado is making real progress as a team. They are making a commitment to the run game and it's helping to balance out their offense. There dominant win over a heavily favored UCF team on the road was their most complete performance of the Coach Prime era.

- As of now, the Heisman race centers around Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe, Ashton Jeanty, and Travis Hunter(in any order you prefer)

- Terrible loss for Ol Miss at home versus Kentucky. It turns out the blowouts against overmatched OOC foes was a mirage. This is a loss that may really impact their ability to garner an at-large playoff big should they not win the SEC

- Did UNLV actually upgrade at QB with Hajj-Malik Williams in place of Matt Sluka? And will he ask for an u upgraded NIL package after passing for 182 yards and rushing for 119 yards (4 touchdowns)?

- Cam Rising isn't an NFL prospect, but Utah simply isn't the same team without him. You could make an argument there isn't a more valuable than he is to his program. Right now, the Big12 is WIIIIIDE open

- Lastly, I don't know how you folks on the East Coast do it. Im was up past 2 am watching the late window games. I really wonder how many people outside of of us die-hards are staying up for these games. And speaking of which, Miami plays Cal with a 10:30 pm, ET start time. By the way, ESPN College Gameday will be in Berkeley for this game. And no, with that 6 am local start time, don't expect a huge throng to show up.

General, way too early playoff look-ahead:

Looks like the Big 12 is heading for 1 team in the CFBPO with the Utah loss last night.

ND would have been officially bounced with a UL L, but won it with a whopping 275 yards and 11 first downs.
NO team should be considered for the CFBPO after losing to Northern Illinois but the ND effect is real.
They'll be 10-1 when they head out to USC on the final week of the season.

USC should be no worse than 9-2 and have the BIG #3 spot (going into ND),
or BIG CG if they beat PSU.
MEEchigan is a solid team but have been very mediocre on the road.

ACC #2's fate hinges on Clemson/UL and Miami/UL given the ND/UL result.
Clemson has interesting games with UL, @VT, and @Pitt (back to back to back).
UL has us at home, @ Clemson, then Pitt.
Speaking of Pitt...big player here if they can split the UL/Clemson games.
We just need to beat flucking UL.

The Ole **** loss was nice, but given how the SEC teams are ranked, they'll still put in a 5th team.

Playoff Spots:
SEC-5
BIG-3
ACC-2
BIG12-1
GO5-1

Some dude with the same name is...

There is only one spot left after the 4 champions, ND, G5 and SEC slurpers get in.

1 Texas SEC
OSU B1G
Miami ACC
WTFK Who the F knows from the Big 12
Tennessee SEC at large
Oregon B1G at large
UGA SEC at large
Bama SEC at large
Penn State
10 Oregon B1G at large
12 ND
Boise State G5
Ole Miss
Michigan
Missouri
Clemson

Last week in this thread I gave Utah and their coach kudos. This week they lost a game they should not have. Big 12 up for grabs.

My hot take is that UGA will not make the playoffs. I can see them losing a couple more games. I do not think a three loss team will make it but if they do select a three loss team they would be the one to have a chance I will admit.

There is waaaaaay too much football yet to be played to make a lot of these predictions and generalizations. I’ve become interested more in the overall contradictions and double standards that are applied, which I realize is sort of baked into CFB fans’ makeups. Things like what’s the storyline if Ole Miss makes the FG at the end and wins in OT? Is the narrative that their team is flawed, got exposed, was poorly coached, has a crappy secondary, can’t tackle and just got lucky? Or would it be that they gritted out a tough win on a day they didn’t have their best stuff, yet overcame adversity….all while maintaining/improving their rank because, you know, $EC?? Those things didn’t happen and they lost the game, however they have the same record as Georgia who likely won’t fall far in the polls.

Someone posted that the $EC will likely get 5 playoff spots. I could see them getting six, with a loud clamoring for more. Once it is conference champ game time, the 2 and 3 loss non participants will be yacking away at how they deserve a spot. That’s when the awful loss to Kentucky by Ole Miss will be written off as a tough loss to a conference opponent and the annual $EC FellatioFest in the media will reoccur yet again. This falls right in line with comment from the OP regarding the diminished importance of last night’s game. It’s a shame, but I’m not so sure that wins and losses matter so much in the regular season if you’re an $EC team. Best conference or not, I’m tired of the preferential treatment that conference gets.
