Look at the underachiever list. 3 SEC teams and 4 Big10 teams. Only one school from the Pac12, ACC and Big12. This shows the effect of conference affiliation on recruiting. A team like Vandy, who is dead last in their conference almost every year still recruits better than half the ACC.

Problem with that list is it doesn’t look at the recruiting class rankings of the teams you play.

You can bring in an average class and have a lot of success, as long as you’re in the Big Ten West where everybody else also has average recruiting classes. That isn’t overachieving.
 
I always debate if the “overachiever” coach is really that great. On one hand, you can say “he’s doing more with less” on the other hand, recruiting is probably the most important part of being a college coach so if he’s not signing good players, is he really that great?
