Cold, Harsh Reality in Charlotte(thoughts on Clemson)..

What a miserable night, never one opportunity to cheer. Reminded me of the Sugar Bowl v Bama and the Peach v LSU (attended both of those as well). We were just outmatched. This wasn't because Richt can't win the big one, we just don't have the talent yet. Now if in year 4-5 we're still getting stomped by the Clemson's of the world then it's time to talk about Richt's ability.

"I still think the best is ahead of this program(they probably over-achieved to a certain degree) but Richt still has a lot to address moving forward. Who knows, maybe this here is his version of the 66-13 drubbing Butch Davis and his team took at Syracuse in 1998....."

Perfect comparison... we hope. Now we know where we are and where the championship teams are. I will tell you though that in 2018 we aren't going to get any "Miami is back" benefit of the doubt. No one will give us props, no one will cut us any slack. We are gong to have to earn every bit of accolade. And that's how Hurricanes want it!!!

Question; how much of a momentum change would it had been if Bagley hit that FG, and we recover those two gimme fumbles? Do the game outcome change? I felt we had a defeatist attitude after a whole w blown opportunities

Rell, that's hard to say, was it deflating? Absolutely. But again, Clemson was just THAT much better. But our Diaz-led unit was in a fog for the first 20 minutes of that game.

And speaking of that drive, once again 'the TO Chain' comes out and we have to settled for a FG.

I never thought Miami had a real shot to win the game unless they took an early lead. Once it was 7-0 you got that sinking feeling

I had the exact same pit in my gut at that point. This game was a bit different than the loss at Pitt....at least in that game, our defense kept us in the game well into the second half, where if the offense had pulled anything together, we could have won. This game, the defense failed the team from the start. It's not an excuse for the offense, which as we all know was putrid, but bottom line, the defense was supposed to keep us in this game. Instead, it allowed Clemson to basically kill us off in the first quarter. What happened to us would have been asking a lot for even a far more accomplished offense than ours to overcome.

Let’s change it up this time.

good write up @k9cane

Perhaps there are some lessons that can be applied to 2020.

I was re-watching this game earlier from a schematic standpoint.

We still do a lot of those same things we did in 2017 defensively.

That first offensive series with the play to Jeff Thomas that Rosier couldn’t fit in was beautiful. I hope we run that play or similar this season. Mark Pope or Harley would make a house call on that with King throwing.

Whatever gameplan we had, burn it.. We let freakin kelly bryant start a record 15-15 or something silly.. if you let him pick you apart, trevor who is actually a great passer will just be toying out there

Also how comical Etienne played in this game and is still here in college, wtf

I dont think that game is the best to look at in order for us to learn something. The 2019 unc clemson game is. UNC held them to 21 points. And that clemson team also had ross and higgins. and on defense had simmons and terrel. 2 first rounders. UNC forced a turnover which helped. But they are beatable for sure

I'm seeing a lot of blame on the Q, but the receivers (two of the best didn't play) didn't help, dropping balls. He was hurried because of a lack of running game. Last week it was on him overthrowing. But this week he threw well enough to get in a rhythm and get his confidence going had the receivers not dropped so many of his early passes. I was in the upper level and that long ball to Thomas looked very catchable - his reaction afterwards showed he thought it was too (loved the call but you have to execute and make the catch). The throw to Barrios at the 1st down marker was right between two defenders and hit him in both hands. Then Thomas makes a catch and fumbles - make those plays and the Qs confidence goes up, the defense isn't right back out of the field.

On the other side, hitting slants and outs, before Clemson's QB had an incompletion, he was exuding confidence and was already up 21-0.

Also when your team is starting slow how about not trying to pour gasoline on a fire with field position with that ever present sub-par punt, in this case 16 yards. The kicking game needs a lot of attention this off season. I watched ten weeks of high school games in SW Florida this season with punters on both teams more consistent than I saw with the Canes. Inexcusable to continue to get hammered in field position in key situations because of it.
I was there too and mentioned how we dug that hole we couldn't climb out of. First, you need to remember, we were on the down slide after those end of season losses. Now the Canes trajectory is on the upswing.

I'm confident King is too good a QB to repeat those early offensive gaffs. King has the ability to get us in a rhythm and play with confidence early - even if its with the TEs and backs. Plus, we now have a punter who isn't an automatic liability.

I was there and what a miserable experience. Just getting into the stadium was a nightmare.

Our Defense gave up 3 TD’s on the first 3 drives. If that happens again next Saturday, guess what? It’s over. Miami needs to figure out a way to hold Clemson under 30 and pray the Offense can score on their Defense.

They are going to put up points and fast judging by the way play defense. Sideline to sideline at LB we at too slow. Outside zone and misdirection kills us. Double screens have also been effective against our aggressive D.

Baker better come up with something

I agree. I think Clemson is about to embarrass Baker and Diaz, once again. This time, fans won’t be able to blame the Offense for their ****** scheme.

****, someone dug this up!! And yes, there was a ticket snafu with the paper tix and it was a huge nightmare, lol

Oh yeah. Look at Diaz soft zone in this game. That’s how he started so hot.

I bumped this because we run the same schemes and Clemson is running the same o. Obviously we’ve got a much different offense.

But schematically Clemson is still doing all the things they do. Those designed QB runs and everything just goes to Lawrence.

I think when evaluating the two teams you can learn a lot from the mistakes Miami made defensively this game.

My bad G. I was just looking at the schemes. Clemson offense and defense.

How Clemson has attacked us in the past offensively.

Also looking at their defensive schemes and the way Miami chose to attack the Clemson offense.

Clemson got all them same coaches and schemes.

Miami we only added Baker and run similar concepts to what manny ran this game. So I feel there’s some things to learn from this as well.

And yeah the ticket **** was crazy I was at this game as well

the wild card in 2020 is King/Lashlee.. that gives me hope

Same. I’m betting Miami to pull the upset. I don’t think it goes how most of the world is thinking. I just wanna see Miami tighten up on defense.

FSU was a good start to get the confidence rolling. Maybe they take momentum into that game.

I’d love to get a D/ST touchdown in Death Valley.

I'll say this again: getting first downs and piling up the number of plays, will be key early on. that's how Cuse beat Clemson in 17 on that Friday night. I remember watching that game with @DMoney at a dive bar in Miami. And in the second half, Clemson was gassed.

IMO, for a team to beat the Clemson's and Bama's of the world, you have to have a mobile QB, or it's nearly impossible to have sustained success versus them

If King can get 5, 6 drive extending runs, I think that will be huge

That’s how Clemson finally got past Bama in that championship game the first time. They ran like 100 plays. Bama couldn’t get off the field and was absolutely gassed.

Even if we score 21 on our first 3 drives?
