Colbert moved to CB officially per PBP

Has the makings of a move that could work out. He's got raw tools that are hard to find. Quinton Dunbar played well at CB in the NFL this year with almost no experience. Sam Shields had 1 year of experience and contributed from day 1 pretty much. Athleticism is usually more important than anything else, and judging by his track times he's got athleticism (also seems to not be afraid of contact).

I like it he's athletic enough to be a very good corner for us.... We could move Elder inside as a nickel some times with Colbert and Redwine on the outside

Out of every position in the NFL, CB is the one position you can excel primarily on athleticism. I have done study on what events at the Combine are meaningful for each position and contributes to success in the NFL. I have found that a players weight, 40 yard time, bench press, broad jump, and 3-cone times are statistically significant in projecting the success of a player into the league. (Believe it or not, the bench press was only statistically significant for OC, DT, CB). If a team had simply chosen players at the position based on measurables, and nothing else (game film, interviews, medicals, workouts), they would have been as successful as the NFL teams have been in drafting.

The top players for these athletic metrics in my database are:

Byron Jones
Josh Robinson
Patrick Peterson
Vontae Davis
Marcus McCauley
Antwaun Molden
Jimmy Smith
Darrelle Revis
Stanford Routt
Jalen Ramsey
Justin Gilbert
Dwayne Gratz
Eric Rowe
Antonio Cromartie
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
Jamar Taylor
Craig Mager
Jordan Lucas
Chris Houston
Carlos Rogers
David Amerson
Leon Hall

That's a pretty **** good list of players to be drafting simply based on metrics in athletic testing. I say all this to say that Colbert has the athletic profile to play CB. He has the athletic profile to play CB in the style we want to play it. He even has the athletic profile to get a shot in the league if he wants to work for it.

Both Colbert and the other Texas grad transfer DB Echols have talent. Both actually played a significant amount 2 seasons ago.

Last year when Texas got off to a terrible start, Strong and the DC made a decision to bench the upperclassmen and try to develop the young players.

We'll see if Colbert can be effective here, but don't write him off before he's played a game.

At worst, he will be a good special teams player, and another body that will prevent the awful duo of Mayes and Henley from ever seeing the field

No brainier. Big tall thinly built veteran who can run.

Rumph needs to prove his worth by coaching a guy like this up because this dude has the physical tools and the urgency of being in his contract year.

Yep. I didn't know he has such a track pedigree. State 200m champ in Texas? That's blazin. Long kid with speed that can play corner? If he can show up, that would be huge.
