This is just based on the games left and # of possible losses.
Of course I was originally trying to figure out a way that UM could still possibly win the coastal.
In this case with the head to head match up advantage over Duke.
UM - 5-3
Duke- 5-3
Ga Tech- 4-4
Pitt - 4-4
Va - 3-5
VT - 3-5
UNC - 3-5
Remaining Games and Current Rankings
#1. Duke (6-1, 2-1 ACC) — Looking back on it now, the victory over the Blue Devils doesn’t look so bad. With wins over Georgia Tech and Virginia, Duke still plays @Pitt, @Syracuse, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, then Wake Forest. If David Cutcliffe’s team pulls off a victory on the road at Pittsburgh, it will be an extremely difficult lead for UM to overcome even though they own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Duke.
#2. Pitt (4-3, 2-1 ACC) — The Panthers did UM a favor by beating the Hokies. Or did they? It seems Pittsburgh has some sort of spell over Frank Beamer’s teams when playing at Heinz Field in the Steel City. Their mark? 0-4. Georgia Tech and Duke at home, then @UNC, Syracuse, and @Miami. Anything can happen.
#3. Virginia (4-3, 2-1 ACC) — Their remaining games? UNC, @Georgia Tech, @FSU, Miami, and @Virginia Tech. That’s a tough stretch for a program in the Coastal. Fasten your seat belt folks, it’s going to be a wild finish.
#4. Georgia Tech (5-2, 2-2 ACC) — The Yellow Jackets didn’t help themselves by dropping last weekend’s game to UNC, 48-43. Just a couple of weeks ago the Ramblin’ Wreck looked like Coastal frontrunners and had total control. They have @Pitt, Virginia, @NC St., Clemson, and @Georgia.
#5. Miami (4-3, 1-2 ACC) — The Hurricanes must hold up their end of the deal by winning every remaining Coastal game; it’s the easiest path without inserting fuzzy math and tiebreakers. If the Canes can finish 8-4, 5-3 in the ACC (that’s projecting a loss to FSU), they would need Duke to be tripped up along the way, twice. Miami owns the tiebreaker here but also needs some help. A loss Thursday in Blacksburg and UM is all but done. Remaining games: @Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Florida St., @Virginia, and Pitt. It’s maddening to point out that UM is capable of winning all but maybe one or dropping the rest of their schedule.
#6. Virginia Tech (4-3, 1-2 ACC) — Miami, Boston College, @Duke, @Wake Forest, and Virginia to end the season. The Thursday night showdown with the Hurricanes will determine whether the Hokies vault themselves back into the race or fall like a rock to the bottom of the standings for 2014.
#7. North Carolina (3-4, 1-2) — The Tar Heels won a wild one over Georgia Tech, keeping themselves mathematically alive for the Coastal Division crown. A surge by UNC is unlikely because they can’t stop anybody on defense. @Virginia, @Miami, Pitt, @Duke, and NC St. make the Tar Heels an underdog moving forward.
