lol they were audibling into direct defenses to s top certain plays. literally.like what?.

if it didnt matter all that much they wouldnt have had that guy going to the extent he went to do what they did..dude was on the sidelines of games an sh*t.

Im not sure people understand how much of an advantage it is to know what the play is when calling a defense

This is a good hire by Michigan for sure. Whittingham always won at Utah.

But I’m sure he had Michigan over a barrel and has created a very favorable contract. Probably a huge buyout.

Good for UMI. Whittingham would never have fit at Miami. But he's an exceptional coach who has 10x the brain power of Ryan Day. I can see UMI being a tough opponent under KW and winning big games similar to Cignetti over at Indiana, even if they won't have quite as good overall talent acquisition as Taint

Just knowing whether its a run or pass play is enough to create an incredible advantage.

It’s just like the Houston Astros. They were telling each other just two things with their sign stealing; fastball or off speed pitch. Not exactly which pitch it would be, or inside/outside, but just fastball or off speed pitch. And that was an incredible advantage and lead to them winning a World Series.

In high level sports when the margins are slim, any advantage can be very impactful.

I'm feeling this is a huge meh.

Granted, gives Meesheeghan a very stable respected name to right the ship, but he is not their long term.answer.

Kinda slap in face to Utah.

So, not exactly sure how coaching trees work but seeing a lot on Twitter claiming Whittingham is Urban Meyer guy

If so, someone explain how

I believe Meyer was at Utah two years and Whittingham was there a few years already

Whitingham was already at Utah when Meyer took over, and he was already a successful DC.
Whitingham played at BYU where he had several brothers on team and where his dad was an assistant who later coached in the NFL (if I recall, don't sue me).
I would consider him more of a member of Lavell Edwards' coaching tree.
One thing about Meyer, he took over programs that may not have been winning, but were, nonetheless, loaded with good players and coaches who were collectively underachieving. This was the case with Bowling Green, Utah, uf and ohio state. As he moved to each program he brought his top 4-5 coaches and kept the top 3-4 holdover assistants. This is how Whitingham ended up in Meyer's circle but not necessarily his tree.
It sounds like some folks are exercising some poetic license with regards to the Meyer's connection.
