Coach Hayes Show

Love all these guys but it's a flawed concept. A real AD wouldn't need and absolutely wouldn't want a "Football GM".

I think Zo is in the mindset of an NFL team structure with a GM, President of Football Operations, etc. I don't think that translates at all to a whole college athletics department. The "Football GM" could exist as an Associate AD but there would still need to be the hierarchy where the actual AD is above him on the organizational flow chart. Otherwise who would the "Football GM" answer to? Random boosters? Frenk? Football alum?
The AD needs to be GM of entire department

I think sometimes we can get caught up on titles/roles. Theoretically, you could have an assistant AD (you can call him a "GM" let's say) under a general AD responsible solely for the football side. Technically he would report to the AD but may have some control and power as it relates to that sport. Could make recommendations in the hiring/firing process, advocate for coaches in terms of needs, recruiting, and general football operations etc. How much power would be dependent on the AD. Roles/responsibilities would have to be clearly demarcated. I would have a feeling Zo would demand complete control on that end. But he still has to answer to someone. Don't think Zo wants to be a general AD, nor would he be necessarily qualified for that.

Will definitely take a listen. Did they give a sense that their ideas had any chance of coming to fruition or just wishful thinking?
The story is that a group led by Mel and Zo have put together a significant amount of $ to donate to the athletic dept for a new staff, as long as they approve of the new staff. Part of the deal would be either a new AD, or removing football from Blake’s purview and installing a football executive.

If a Torretta/Zo combination come in James is out it would seem to me. He can still have some fund raising role though. Torretta would fill the AD role and Zo be heading up football. Maybe as an "asst. AD" for football. Lamar brought up the example of the Louisville Athletic dept. having an AD and various asst. ADs for each sport. So the model is not unique.
We have this model now. Jen strawley.

We don’t, but who else will walk into this mess?
Maybe wishful thinking, but there’s got to be some solid ADs at G5 schools that have built solid athletic departments, or a really qualified associate AD at a strong P5.

The AD job here is filled tho, and it’s not going to open up. The only way this works out well is if football is split from the rest of the department, in which case Alonzo does have the qualifications we’d need.

I love these guys. But holy sh*t. If you think ANY university would ever hire someone that's publicly stating their goal would be to make this university a "football" school....then I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

You can officially cross Zo's name off the potential AD list.

I watched it too. They talked about a lot of stuff including recruiting, the culture etc. discussed the UVA game too.

Their structural changes included getting rid of Blake and installing some like a Gino Toretta to be the traditional “AD”. There would be a new position they call “GM” which is where Alonzo comes in. He would have sole ownership of every aspect of the football program.

They talked about what Saban did at Bama- his structure behind the scenes that affects not only operations but details of guys watching film with just a couple of players. Lamar also talked about Kentucky’s AD structure - they have an assistant AD who attends every coaches meeting, team meeting etc. that person reports back to the AD. At Kentucky, where basketball is king, there are two assistant ADs just for that sport.

My take was their vision for the future and the way to success is to start with the structure both within the athletic department and specifically within football. They aren’t necessarily saying it has to be a “Miami guy” but it has to be someone who understands the culture, and city of Miami. Someone who is “a bigger personality” than the football program.

Alonzo specifically said there is “plenty of money” to do what needs to be done.

How can it be flawed when the AD is responsible for all other sports. Bring a football person to deal with only football. Other schools have that. Some schools have AD's and they don't care anything about other sports except football as that is the money. Miami treats it like a red headed step child. We are a joke

These players almost talk like part of the delusional fan base. NFL GM and AD jobs are completely different animals. They sound like the bring Dorsey to HC or OC with Ray Lewis linebacker coach. Sorry to break it to u delusional fans that **** won't work. It would be a monumental disaster of epic proportion ruining our legacy of players because of fan negative feedback (I would be leading that charge of course)

Bring me SEC type experience at AD and HC....alpha's who do all and anything to win and give them the budget to make any move they please. Gut the hiring committee and hire goons....no more Vilma trying to hire Strong or Richt.....bring in guys that are good at those jobs and have work under successful SEC guys. It's that fuqin simple yet UM seems to be stuck in the mud along with numerous fan who drool like Diaz.
