Coach Diaz Following Jamel Cook

Saw that. Looks like his first follow after his hire was announced. Have a feeling the staff is gonna go hard after Jamel after the quiet period ends.

Cook and Ahmonn Richards are the two biggest fish, IMO. Superstar talents at positions of need.

What are your thoughts on Diaz?

Don't want to speak for him, but I remember DMoney posting this in a thread when Dan Mullen was being discussed as a head-coaching possibility for Miami a month ago:

1) Can he fix the defense?

Mullen's defenses at Mississippi State have been pretty crappy. Aside from a very good season in 2011 with Fletcher Cox and two NFL corners, here are MSU's ranks in defensive yards-per-play under Mullen:

2015- 54th
2014- 72nd
2013- 70th
2012- 58th
2010- 40th
2009- 82nd

It's not impossible to build a strong defense in Starksville. Jackie Sherrill had some killer units in the late '90s. But Mullen hasn't done it.

Also, many posters have justifiably criticized Charlie Strong for his defensive failures at Texas. Are the same people ready to hitch their wagon to Manny Diaz?

Texas recruiting classes compared to Mississippi state in a mich tougher confrence. Other than vandy Mississippi state is bottom of the barrell

Miss St will never get top recruits especially in their division. Considering all the guys they lost Diaz did very well

I read Cook disappeared in some big games this year. Superstar kids don't disappear. I haven't seen him play personally. Thoughts?

The board is split on him. I like him and think he is a must get. Him and Derwin James roaming the secondary for FSU doesn't bode well for us. We have to find a way to flip him.

We needs safeties! He is a must get! We also need some playmakers at WR so that makes Richards another huge target.

Yep, I have concerns. High risk, high reward candidate. The Coach Kool hiring makes me a little more confident, though.

Sorry @ 01Canes

You do realize that the only two years he was DC in those stats was 2010 and 2015. He improved his defense 42 places in 2010 from 82 to 40 and 18 slots from 2014 to 2015.

not to mention he was doing it in the toughest division in college with sub-par talent. Mostly 30 something ranked recruiting classes.

The same patterns can be seen at his other stints as well.

He actually improved Texas's defense in year one after Muschamp left for Florida as well before the dumpster fire.

Pulling these guys and holding on to what we have and pulling in one surprise DT would round this class out perfectly.
