CMR on the playbook

There are going to be a lot of upset Georgia fans this year when they see Richt winning at Miami. Some will say, "I told you so", while others will say, "The ACC is just easier than the SEC." I don't think Georgia upgraded they HC position, while I think Miami, as you say, got a blessing from God.
A lot of people on here don't understand that getting CMR is a blessing from God.

I fully hope and expect Richt to win at miami. I (and any other UGA fan with even a few working brain cells) have no ill will whatsoever towards Richt. He is a class act, excellent coach, and gave his all to us for 15 years. I love the man. With that said, 15 years in the SEC is a long time, especially considering we win the last 10 without an SEC title. It was best for both parties to move on. I truly believe that we are going to take the next step towards playoff contention, and also believe that MIami is going to get itself headed in the right direction as well. I think this move was a huge plus for both schools.

Probably accurate, at least I hope.

UGA is definitely trading winning at the highest level over integrity, and this is coming from the mouth of quite a few UGA alums I know. Will Kirby do that? Who knows, but I'm not sure time spent under Saban teaches integrity, while you do learn however, so many other facets of operating at the highest level.

Really a catch 22 for us. Many of our fans did not want Richt since they believe he is not cutthroat enough to get us back to prominence, and given our private school disadvantages....the belief is that we need a renegade willing to stand up to what the SEC and other state institutions have become.

Personally, I'm excited to have him and can't wait to see if he can parlay his "doing things the right way" style with the loads of South Florida talent now even more at his disposal. That would be a coup if he can. Regardless, it is just nice to finally have a real college football coach and operation in Coral Gables after so many years of taking the cheap way out and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

Working under Saban has not proven to help guys become good HCs on their own. In fact, it's pretty much been the opposite. Same with all the Belichick disciples.

How insightful!

Why did you fire al golden? Because you weren't winning enough? Because he didn't have Miami where it should rightfully be? See where I'm going with this?

Numbers are cool and all until you see what they really mean. Richt averaged 10 wins a season over his career. WHOA! We'd be stupid to give that up right!? Well...we haven't won the SEC since 2005. That's a problem. We've won our divsion twice in the last 10 years, over a time that UF and UT have hit historic lows. This is a problem. Did you watch us last year? We went to overtime with georgia southern. We beat missouri by 1 score. GT won 3 games and we barely hung on. We lost to UF the last 2 years when they weren't even very good.

At some point you have to decide if you're content with 9 or 10 wins and the outback bowl or if you actually want to win titles. Richt had his time but it was time to move on. And I was very clear earlier that I have nothing but love, admiration, adn respect for Richt. So this isnt' sour grapes. It was simply time to move in another direction.

You fired Richt because he put your program in a position where the fans thought your program should be winning more than it actually should be.

We fired Folden because he was a loser. Our program has shown what it can do under 5 different HCs. Yours had 1 moment of glory because of one generational player--Herchel Walker.

Kirby Dumb is Will Muscrap II. You'll be crying in your beer when he flops.

That's how I feel as well. They went out on a very limp limb in hiring a guy HOPING he's the next Saban.

Why did you guys hire a guy HOPING he's something he's not? Georgia is taking a HUGE risk hiring a guy that hasn't proven anything as a head coach. This can backfire in a terrible way for Georgia. I get firing Richt and emptying the bank to hire an Urban Meyer, Nick Saban type. I'd say that's a move Georgia fans can get behind. Firing a quality coach for a risk? Right now all Georgia has is hope. They HOPE this guy can be the next Nick Saban. I'm sorry, but he's not.

"You fired Richt because he put your program in a position where the fans thought your program should be winning more than it actually should be. "

Tell me then, what should we expect? You clearly know more about UGA than I do. In my eyes, UGA is historically (as in all time) the 3rd best SEC program behind bama / big gap / UT /small gap / UGA,UF,LSU/AU in the next 3rd tier together. Seems fair yeah? Since Richt took over at UGA, bama has won 4 national titles, UF has won 2 national titles, LSU has won 2 titles, and even AU with that bum chizik won a title. UT hasn't but they did win one in 98. So basically we've been passed up by most of our main competition the last 15 years.

You don't measure yourself in a vacuum and just say "we won [X amount] games this season, we're good". You compare yourself to your competition to see if you're where you need to be. 01-07 we were winning big, winning the SEC, going to the BCS, things were gravy. Since that time, we've either stagnated or fallen way behind. This isn't opinion, it's fact. Just look around. Richt isn't a variable or some wildcard, we knew exactly what we were getting with richt. At this point it's worth trading the known commodity for a chance to go even higher.

After Vince Dooley, ray goff put us in the tank. After that, Jim Donnan at least got us to winning 7 or 8 games again. He raised the bar a bit. After him, Richt raised the bar even higher to where we were winning 9/10 games on the reg. More progress. But he stagnated. It's time to raise the bar yet again, and richt wasn't the one to do it.

"Our program has shown what it can do under 5 different HCs. Yours had 1 moment of glory because of one generational player--Herchel Walker."

We've won SEC titles in 6 different decades. We've won more NCs than just 1980. I don't typically buy into generic rankings from websites, but for the sake of this discussion let's look at CFBDW's top programs of all time: Team All-Time Rankings

There are 10 teams listed ahead of us. Of those 10, all 10 have won a title more recently than we have. Look at the 10 directly behind us. Of those 10, 7 have won a title more recently than us.

This isn't delusions of grandeur here, this is realizing that we're getting left behind. It's time to fix something.

"Kirby Dumb is Will Muscrap II."

There is, literally, no way to know that. At all.

I don't blame Georgia for firing Richt. To say the relationship had grown stale is an understatement. The problem with winning is that the expectations grow. Richt help take Georgia from an SEC also ran to a pretty consistent contender. I guess they hope Smart can help them make the next jump. I won't crap on their hire as sometimes you need to take risks to win big. The downside is they could end up worse off and right back where they were before hiring Mark Richt.

Funny how expectations work. I can remember a time that if Miami didn't win a national title, I considered the season a failure. Now, I'd be stoked with 10 wins and an ACC runner up finish. Not as long term goals but for the immediate future, I'd more than settle for that.

Also, UGA has (1) AP recognized title:1980. If you want to go back into the 30's and 40's when teams like Alabama and Notre Dame were proclaiming themselves "National Champions" and still claim those titles today, you can. But I find that ancient stuff laughable at best.

"They went out on a very limp limb in hiring a guy HOPING he's the next Saban"

It has literally nothing to do with wanting to be the next saban. Guess what? There is no "next saban". The guy is a top 3 or 4 coach in CFB history. What we DO hope is to be competitive again in our own league (which we haven't for a decade), make the BCS again (which we haven't since the 07 season), and quit getting absolutely stomped out once or twice a year like we have almost every season since 07.

Don't really think that's a lot to ask.

You're exactly right. In the 90s we'd give our left arm to just win the east. Then Richt brought us to new heights where just winning 10 games doesnt' cut it, and we actually need to win something of importance. Your expecations shift over time, which is natural and there's nothign wrong wtih it.

I also don't buy into the "Georgia's gonna be sorry they hired Smart" stuff either. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. Personally I don't really care as Georgia's not a rival and we never play. If anything I hope he beats Florida more often. I will say that I am more than happy that they decided to go in a different direction coach-wise otherwise we'd be *****ing about Mario Cristobal or some other bum running our program even further into the ground.

If I had to pick a second favorite team it would be UGA because I am from Georgia and hate Ga. Tech. WG Dawg, I think you're going to be in for a tough season if Eason isn't the second coming of Jameis Winston and Winston didn't even play as a true freshman. True freshmen don't do well in the SEC. If Lambert is your starter, you're in trouble. UNC, Ole ****, Tennessee and Florida are going to give you ****. Auburn may by the end of the year. You took the OC from Pittsburgh and that's not saying much since we curb stomped them in Pittsburgh last year with a TE coach coaching our team on the interim level. Your D may be OK, but your O is going to suffer. I don't see you winning 10 games this year. Just my viewpoint but it's valid. Kirby is going to feel the heat real quick.

You can blame your AD for that.
