Miami Hurricanes Football Scrimmage Report: 8/11

One of the things that was overlooked during the scrimmage was Bubba Baxa's performance.

According to CMR "• K Bubba Baxa struggled kicking at Hard Rock Stadium during the scrimmage, but Richt did say he has been good in practice leading up to the scrimmage."

I'll chalk it up to freshman jitters. I'm hoping he gets better and its well within his capabilities to do so. ( A 57 yarder that just missed )

So for now I'm not worried.

We desperately need for Bubba to become our "Automatic" 3 points and XP

I’ll take anyone over bagely. He the most overrated kicker in UM history, and dude would always miss clutch kicks.

He was good when there was zero pressure, but clutch kicks???? Awful

Bagley was overrated. He missed crucial kicks throughout his career.

He’s going to be fine .. I’d be more worried 3rd scrimmage in we have the same report ... same with the tightends

Bubba missed a 57-yard FG, long enough but wide. I read Richt’s comments where Bubba’s ‘eyes got wide his first time in a half-billion dollar stadium’. But Richt didn’t elaborate except noting the one long miss.

I REALLY wanted to read he was a beast. Baxa worries the **** out of me because he has always struggled with accuracy. So.. Technically.. This is already a trend. His junior year he made 5/9 (55%) & followed that up with a 4/10 (40%) senior season. If it's a 3 point game with 5 seconds left & we send him out there for anything longer than an XP.. Smh.. We just need to hope it never comes to that.

BUT from what I was able to find, he was money on his xp attempts & is a monster on kickoffs. He just needs to keep the ball in bounds.

I just can't believe there are/were no other options out there to play until he's ready. Dealing with Feagles is bad enough. We're about to send out a true freshman, with known accuracy issues, agsinst a top tier defense, in a nationally televised game, to attempt his first career kick. The pressure in an EMPTY stadium already got to him. I need to point out again that over his last two seasons in high school he only made 47% of his kicks. This is some seriously concerning ****. I'm all for having patience. But if we have to start going for it on 4th downs because Richt doesn't trust him, we're in trouble.

High school kicking stats are tough. Always have been. The snappers and holders in high school F up all the time.

Bro do not count highschool stats against kickers ... there’s some artards snapping holding and blocking for field goal and punt

Can you post the distances of those kicks in his Jr/Sr year?

All reports have had him performing well thus far so will chalk it up to 1st real action jitters.

Idk for sure, but IF he only missed the 57 yarder, color me not concerned at all. Regardless, if he's still inconsistent the next 2 scrimmages, that would be alarming.

Having a reliable kicker can't be overstated. Otherwise, that **** can lose you games.

I think FSU having really good kickers has us over thinking the position.

Bama’s missed kicks have seldom actually mattered

Alabama has won five national championships in nine years. They have done that with average kicking at best. At worst, the Tide have been downright bad in the kicking game since Saban’s gotten things rolling. Here’s how they’ve ranked year-by-year in field goal percentage:

2008: 67th
2009: 21st
2010: 61st
2011: 85th
2012: 45th
2013: 90th
2014: 97th
2015: 82nd
2016: 57th
2017: 90th
They’ll just beat you like a drum seven points at a time.

I definitely agree with that. But then.. He didn't miss one extra point. Again, I agree that his attempts could've very easily well been affected by his teammates poor play. But I would've thought it would've also caused a couple misses on extra point attempts. U know? He made 26 of 26.
Don't get me wrong.. If he can be a beast on kickoffs & make all his extra points, I'll be happy as ****. It's the attempts from 40 yards out when we're down by 2, with 5 seconds left that I'm concerned about.

* The kicking situation coming out of the scrimmage?

Freshman Bubba Baxa was much better after missing both his field goal tries in scrimmage one (from 50 and 57). He made all three field goal tries and hit his extra points.

A side story line to keep an eye on is the guy who has emerged as the No. 2 kicker this fall - he's a graduate senior transfer from Fordham who is doing well ... Alejandro Cardenas. If Baxa falters he'll be the guy UM turns to. He hit his only field goal attempt last night. Here's Cardenas' bio from Fordham.

One thing I sort of don't understand is why college coaches don't take a delay of game penalty when they elect to kick a FG from either hash inside the 5. Makes for a near impossible angle. Badgely struggled with this his whole career.

I like it...Plans A and B...both seem like solid options. Just hope nothing in the LasSU game comes down to his leg...let him get the butterflies out against Savannah State/Toledo instead.

Under some of our past regimes, we'd be looking at a kicker worse than Baxa coming in, and his backup pulling a reverse Brian Monroe (aka - coming over from WR to K)...like one of the walk-on WRs flipping to K.
