Clemson vs Duke 9/4 8 pm

Dabo is a good coach but he also caught lightning in a bottle with some early staff hires and his run of QBs. I think he is coming back down to reality as a top 25 type CEO more so than an elite, perennial national championship HC.

His more recent coaching hires and lack of portal use are a bit concerning if your a Clemson fan.
The glaring issue is simple, to me. You can't survive on just recruits when the rest of the country is getting grown men ready to play via the transfer portal. You got to hit on astounding number of your recruits to compete at the highest level that way. If half your class ends up not as good or takes longer to develop than you plan, and you aren't looking for seasoned guys to replace them, you aren't going to compete in this day. Never happen. That is what Dabo is stuck in, this high road moral dilemma.

It’s not about what you got all the time … but instead how you use it ! ……Evaluation over Stars!

He does, and alphas are looking for the next bigger challenge. For some reason, Aranda thought he could win big there. Nice failure, though, in trying to trap me. Maybe work on the content and not try for sick burns.

Bud, just take the L. Not every coach thinks they're going to win every game. They, like us, know there's talent disparities in every sport.

Outwardly, they'll act like they can win and seem to believe it, but that's smoke and mirrors. As an athlete, you learn to read right through that bull**** and you know what, it's okay. You know the guy across from you is faster, bigger, stronger, maybe the best in the country. Across from your teammate, same thing, all across the board.

This board hates talking about morale victories, sometimes that's the goal. Just to keep it close, not get blown out. If it's a close game when you're an over matched squad, that's where a belief that you can pull off the upset sometimes becomes a reality. When Duke kept making plays and it was close, they all started to believe then.

****, in some cases you just hope not to get embarrassed. That a blowout won't derail all the work you've put into the season so far. Keep it close, the team will benefit. See, we're that close, keep working, you're better than you thought we were.

One of my boys I coach hadn't lost a game in 4 (now into 5) years and we finally lost one. It was a fluke, but I had other coaches asking me, did you all really lose. **** the other team was even shocked, completely floored. Even other players I'd run into or play against the next week. Funny thing, I have never been prouder if a game I've coached than that one. They almost all folded and it would've been worse. Instead, I took a timeout, talked to them, they busted ***, and tied it up. Lost it in the last 30 seconds in another fluke play.

I'm alpha as can be. I know how to coach, but there's better coaches out there. Even games we expect to throttle them, I am still nervous before every game, in particular the night before. Play different scenarios in my head, so I know how to address them when or if they occur. I'm never content, but in the same breath, I'm never 100 percent we're gonna win. We haven't even played a close game in that run. I know there's weird things that can happen, so there's some doubt.

Rant off. I may address your reply if there is one, but I've got practice a bit later. Have a good one. I'm okay agreeing to disagree here.

Clemson 247 board is crazy. Seems more than a few of them were predicting something like this loss was coming. Dabo's coaching staff has been under fire.....

Coaching experience prior to Clemson

Wes Goodwin: First coaching job
CJ Spiller: First coaching job
Tyler Grisham: First coaching job
Lemanski Hall: First coaching job
Kyle Richardson: High school
Mickey Conn: High school
Thomas Austin: 2 years at Georgia State

This is where the problem lies for the past couple of years. And that falls at Dabos feet.

Looks like Radio's staff

I think Clemson will be very good by year’s end.
I agree with this. Clemson is going to be a handful the remainder of the season. I think they were overconfident and clearly not prepared at no point watching that game did I think that Duke was the better team.

I thought they looked good on defense for the majority of the game. It’s human nature (especially at that age) to say **** it when an offense isn’t holding up their end. We’ve seen it here for years.

The OL looks rough. Unathletic and weak as ****.
I thought the DL still looked like it has the last few years but the DB’s were so underwhelming physically. The receivers have really fallen off too. The OL was supposed to be one of the strengths and they couldn’t pass block at all.

Their Defense was not bad. Not the caliber of previous years but still solid. Especially their DL. Clemson doesn’t fumble in this game and they win.

That being said, their offense is bad. Not a fan of their scheme at all.
The DL still looks the part but it’s mostly the DB’s that caught my eye negatively. They consistently got beat to the boundary on run plus.

I’m not a fan of the scheme either but it took TCU to the national championship with supposedly lesser players and now with, “better,” players they look like 🚮. They might be in for a long, frustrating season.

The better team doesn't necessarily win against a team that wants it the worst.

That’s not the OC’s scheme.

From last nights game, trying to extrapolate anything other than Clemson played as poorly as they possibly could is meaningless.
Clempson beats dook 9 out of 10 times.
Nope. Clemson maybe wins without the turnovers, but you could also say Duke should have been up 21-0 at the half.

The announcers said it. "Clemson isn't faster than Duke." "Clemson WRs aren't separating."

Their defense is good, but their offense is not. They have an average at best OL. They don't recruit at an elite level for the OL as they do the DL. I attribute that to Venables and I expect Clemson to fall off in DL recruiting over the next few years.

They don't have elite WRs and they're struggling with the offensive scheme.

I expect they'll be a better team by the time we play them, but I have no fear of them. We should beat them based on what I saw last night. I'm not including the poor play. They are just not an elite team.

Dabo got lucky and struck gold with his original OC and DC hires that he had for many years. They had continuity and were able to establish the culture and scheme. Now, he's in the same boat as Mario not being an OC or DC. Completely reliant on finding good hires for both coordinator positions.

I heard today Dabo has only taken 2 transfers ever, is that right? Some qb on roster now and Hunter Johnson qb from Northwestern last year. So you hate the transfer portal but take 2 qbs that will never play.

Confused Joe Biden GIF by CBS News
Hunter Johnson was originally at Clemson for multiple years before transferring and then transferred back as a graduate. So, Dabo has only taken 1 guy from the portal that he didn't sign out of high school.

Of course it doesn't. The two situations aren't the same yet you're comparing them as if they were. Dabo didn't suddenly forget how to motivate players or hire competent staff members.
I disagree. The fact is, he hasn't had to hire staff outside of the Clemson family for over a decade. He had Venables and Elliot for nearly a decade as DC and OC. Dabo has promoted from within until this year when he replaced his OC. He had it good for a very long time.
