Clay Helton update

I hear and agree with your points but also want to add this: the portal is a great way of adding talent at talent deprived areas on the team. It's also smart because it helps bridge/defer an area of weakness. It allows player who aren't ready to continue to develop. I'm all for adding 3-5 players from the portal every year. Bama who annually has a stacked roster has utilized the portal to bolster their roster as well. Two of their starters are transfers.
The transfer portal is a thing nowadays. If you ain’t participating, you’re going to be left with your dyck in your hands. Even Baga has a 2/3 starters from the portal. If a P5 team is adding a boatload of transfers, then that’s a problem. But adding a few talented players to enhance the roster is smart roster management. If nothing else, Manny has been adept at using the portal to enhance the roster while still bringing in a good class of HS recruits.

What an ignorant post. Transfers have existed for decades, and Miami has targeted transfers and JuCos for decades. And the only reason that Miami "started targeting transfers", as you mistakenly call it, is that we were only able to sign 18 HS kids in Manny's first year, so we had a pile of ICs to hand out.

The Portal is merely an announcement mechanism to allow contact, when transferring (and an informal "transfer portal") has existed all along. Not to mention, "immediate eligibility" is something that has only been around for one year.

So, yeah, Miami has not "developed" any HS-recruited DEs into first round draft picks in the last year or two. Wow, what brilliant insight.

You win. You and your selective stats and dates. Yes, even though the "Transfer Portal began" and "Miami started targeting transfers" in 2019, we cannot possibly credit Rousseau's development to his playing time during the 2019 season (and 2019 coaches), as everything he ever learned happened in Fall 2017 while he was still in high school and Kuligowski was conducting secret sessions with him.

Sure, Kuligowski did all kinds of volunteer coaching, in addition to his day job, to develop Rousseau while he was still in high school. Sure. Happens all the time. Position coaches are always doing pro bono work with 3-star recruits.

Good lord, the absolute NONSENSE that gets porsted on this board, and you think you have credibility because you have a relative who went to UM. Yep, Rousseau's roommate knows everything that Kuligowski did while Greg was still in high school. Hilarious.

At least your log-in name is accurate, since you are full of it.
@TheOriginalCane ....Credibility because he had a relative go their??....You do realize @Poopscoop played & started for UM??....He forgot more about UM FB than anyone knows about UM FB on this board....I've known this Man since he was a Freshman at UM....My advice...Listen to him...If not...Please don't discredit him....and by the way..before you start the proverbial "I'm a UM Grad"....so is he...actually he has 2 Degrees...one from UM...and one from another school....successful businessman, with a Son who is as successful, if not more...

Jokers forget how bad our D was under Golden and who we had lined up out there.
Our D literally gave up 16 points, that’s not the problem.

This is why firing a coach at this point in the season makes no sense. Fickell is obviously not leaving Cincinnati two games into their season and it just gives Cincinnati more time to negotiate with Fickell for more money and a longer contract, especially now that they are moving to the Big 12.

I don't get how u say this things as if thats not gonna be an indictment of the 6th year coach. He can make excuses for the Offense but he has been on charge of the defense. He had 2 4 year LBs, 4 years to bring in proper under studies, not only look at the state of the position now, look at the state of the recruiting. If you remember it was Golden who target Shaq and Mike etc. They chose to stay, but since Diaz them had the opportunity to scout and recruit, we see the result. You don't get championship players hy magic, its all on the coach, and in his 6 years, terrible depth everywhere if not for the Portal. Bad evaluation, even worse development
He’s been here 6 years..first 3 as the DC..defense was not the issue. LB play was the issue last szn. And that also coincided with our Front four not playing well in the run game..along with replacing 2 4 year starters. go look at the rushing stats the first 2 games (small sample size I know) and that wasn’t the issue either. Definitely a drop off from what shaq was while here. But if you asked cis in 2019, shaq wouldn’t be missed..a couple career ending injuries also…along with injuries the past couple szn..all that said we have to recruit better at that spot.

They get months to do a proper search instead of a few weeks. With the early signing period its more important. U hire a coach near signing day and the kids change their minds late. Also they give themselves the chance to go after every available qualified coach and pick someone they want, not someone they get backed into because of time running out.

I aint making any excuse for a coach after being a school for 6 years. He has none. No one gives a ****. If he cant fix something in 6 years, how exactly can he fix it in 7,8,9? Not only did he have recruiting to do it. He had the portal. I remember everyone making excuse for Golden for getting smashed and disrespected by Teddy Bridgewater, only to watch the 4 1/2 year procession to 58-0 v Clemson. We are watching the same thing. Saturday we will be arguing about the same exact thing we saw last Saturday. Nothing changes for good, it only gets worse

Other than Bob Stoops, who are they interviewing right now, let alone hiring? They have to sit on their hands for the next few months doing exactly what they would be doing anyways - analyzing other teams during the season and gathering information. Every AD worth a salt has a list of 10 coaches they would want to interview and can do backdoor queries during the season. How did firing Taggart early help FSU one bit during their coaching search?

You quite literally made that entire paragraph of situations up. Somehow every year coaches get hired and fired, and USC is going to be one of the most coveted jobs this off-season. The reality is they would be analyzing every coach during the season anyways, doing their due diligence, and at that point do interview. Do you think Fickell is going to leave Cincinnati midseason or announce he is after leaving to USC in the middle of the year?

You may think you can save the season. At least be respectable, and see how the team and staff respond. You can also start back channel converations.
They could do back channel conversations regardless. They know they are not hiring one of their coordinators so what is the value in how they respond to a substitute teacher? There will be a new boss and culture anyways.

It’s about pulling the band-aid, not having a lame duck all season. No reason to wait, IMO. For Helton, too.

And, believe it or not, there are coaches and agents who won’t discuss a job that isn’t open.

No doubt our D is better now than under Golden, but my man if it wasn’t for App State having an atrocious quarterback they would’ve hung at least 30 on us.
I mean we can ‘what if, but if’ all day, we left a lot of points on the field too. They may not have a great QB but having a defense that brings pressure does influence the QB whether they get to him or not. That internal clock will force you to make errent throws.

The guy played at Clemson, how many better QBs are we going to face. I wouldn’t be surprised if we went on a run and ended with 10 wins. Playing tougher teams at the beginning of the season could benefit us later. App St win will look better down the road.

Coaches are not leaving mid season. Have you evee heard of an agent or no? U think they have to do the negotiations themselves? I remember the reporters asking Saban week after week, are u going to alabama? How do you think they got wind of that, you think Saban did the talking himself? Get real.

I won’t be arguing at all tbh..this quit sad

No one will win there, there is a california leak that bama has. The only one who stops a bit of that is Mario Cristobal hes the only one that battles bama out there.

I understand that, and that is my exact point. They can reach out to agents or intermediaries through backchannels during the season regardless of the coach being fired or not.
