CJ Bailey needs to come home

Bailey would not make sense as the Qb to target in the portal imo. We either should have our sights set way higher or for a higher potential guy.

High ceiling portal targets: DJ Lagway, Sam Leavitt, Aidan Chiles, Drew Mestemaker, Byrum Brown, Lanorris Sellers, Austin Simmons

High Floor (and ceiling for most, these would be top targets all around): JKS (Cal QB), Dylan Riaola, Darian Mensah, Demond Williams, Brendan Sorsby, Rocco Becht, Josh Hoover,

I haven’t posted in this forum in forever but this here might be the dumbest analysis I’ve ever read. Mendoza is a DOG..this take is ridiculous.
Nothing dumb about it at all.

Mendoza is an average game manager QB, his numbers & the eye test back that up.

Indiana is having the same season they had last year with a similar QB who put up the same numbers as Mendoza is now, so what does that say?

Mendoza is "DOG" because he plays on a team that does all the heavy lifting for him. When he was at Cal, he was an average QB.

If Mendoza wasn't from Miami, no one on this board would even know who he was.

But, regardless of that. You want a full breakdown of the film of why I categorize Mendoza the way that I do? Or would rather just stick with hyperbole arguments?

Pick your poison.

Leavitt and Sellers would be at the top of my list. Those two are program changers, the kind of QBs you sign and potentially win a title with. Do I like Bailey? Yes, but I also feel as if he's getting a boost from our fanbase because he's a local guy, much like we saw with Mendoza last year. I know, Mendoza has had a great start to the season, but his flaws are still there and honestly, if it came down to Beck vs. Mendoza, you go with Beck every single time, especially if you are looking at this from a performance standpoint.

Hoover, Becht and Mensah would be a step down from those guys and honestly, this is where Bailey fits in. Even then, I'd be looking at it from a financial standpoint. Do you spend big money for someone in this tier, especially if you have seen enough to Luke Nickel and believe he is the guy? Do you look for a reclamation project like Lagway and bring him in at a lower price point and create a winner take all position battle in camp? Lots of possibilities. I will say this, no matter who you bring in, don't be shocked if they are gone in a year, and you have someone like Coleman ready to come in and make a legit push for the starting spot. I've seen enough of him to know that he could be a solid day one starter at this level.

Nailed it. How do I know that mock drafts are utterly worthless? There are some that have this B- arm talent QB as the first overall pick. Mendoza is a solid QB that is in the perfect system for what he does well. Look at the numbers, most of his TDs and best performances came against Kennesaw and Indiana State.

While he was good against Oregon and Iowa, you also saw a significant dropoff. Illinois is coming back to earth, and that was by far his best performance against an actual team.

Gonna have to do some digging to see if the people talking up Sellers were the same ones infatuated with Milroe 10 months ago.
Milroe wasn't as impressive arm wise as Sellers, but I think that the South Carolina offense is too "Let's have this guy do everything", and doesn't take his development as a passer seriously. It's a very HS looking offense where you know you have a stud athlete and just want the ball in his hands.

@DMoney or anyone in the know! This might be a dumb question, but is going after a portal QB every year eventually going to effect our QB recruiting? I'm not talking now but down the road.

Chiles stinks. I wanted to like him but he just isn’t good. And him stinking is about to get Jonathan smith fired.

I’d take Mestemaker over both Sellers and Leavitt I think. Cheaper and 2 yrs.

If you’re going Sellers and Leavitt price range, I’d rather just get Mensah, Sorsby, Hoover who I’m very confident would fit this offense

Who cares if it does? Bring 2 cheap HS QBs a year if you have to. Tell them our plan is to portal, but if you show out in practice after a couple years of development you can earn the job. It’s up to them to make us not want to portal. But if like Nickel hasn’t shown he’s capable of taking the starting job next yr why would we not portal?

giphy (2).gif

Smith & Chiles walking back into Corvallis like they never left

He started off hot but he’s been *** the last few games. 6 ints in the last 3 and 7 total on the season
I wouldn't want that kid. Knowing we'd lose one if not both of nickle & Coleman, the only kid I'd take is the Washington QB. Not even a question for anyone else cause we think nickle is gonna be VERY good.

He's currently second in Heisman odds. Which Miami person is pulling the strings there?

And which local homer is running the NFL teams that are scouting Mendoza?

You have it backwards. This isn't even a debate outside of the fringes of Miami message boards.

Don’t forget about Trey Lance too
Yall would be saying the exact same thing about Josh Allen had he not turned himself around. Those two players obviously have a lot of talent. Their main problem was the amount of snaps they’ve taken. If Anthony Richardson had 3-4yrs of starting experience with that build and being LITERALLY the most athletic qb ever, and he still went top 5, then it wouldn’t have been a reach whatsoever. Taking QBs who have only started 1 yr in CFB and also barely even did **** in HS, is obviously not the smartest strategy. But the fact they went so high meant they obviously had TALENT. But the NFL and CFB are different beasts in going for a QB. If you ARENT swinging for home runs in NFL you’re an idiot. You take a Richardson and Trey Lance over a Kenny Pickett 100/100 times and just ******* hope they figure it out.

This years QB class isn’t very good regardless

NFL teams overdraft QB's on an annual basis.

The league is literally littered with guys who were 1st round high draft picks, former Heisman winners & runners up, who can't play worth a lick.

As I said before, if Mendoza is who you say he is, Indiana shouldn't lose a game this season given the rest of their schedule.

So no QB drafted high can be a bad pick as long as they’re athletic with a big arm?…

D, you know as well as I that these mock drafts are pure garbage. Unlike a guy like Anthony Richardson, where you could make the argument(and even then, he climbed up the boards because of how he looked in shorts), you can't make an argument for Mendoza. I think GMs are so incredibly desperate for QBs, that they will anoint anyone, even physically limited, albeit talented college QBs, in the hope that they can hit the lottery. Their original chosen one (Arch Manning) appears to be nowhere near ready to lead a franchise, which is exactly how you end up with a guy with okay arm talent that can beat up on garbage being viewed as a potential #1 overall pick.
