Cincinnati WR Transfer Tony Johnson Commits to Miami

Miami and coach Mario Cristobal have just secured another experienced wide receiver from the transfer portal, as Cincinnati slot receiver Tony Johnson has committed to the team.

Tony is a three-star transfer portal wide receiver. Although he was not rated out of high school, he hails from Ocala, Florida, which is about five hours away from Miami's campus in Coral Gables.

Tony is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver who recorded 48 receptions for 449 yards last season. Johnson was a key player for Cincinnati during his lone season with the program, having transferred from FAU last year.

During his time at FAU, he recorded a total of 669 receiving yards over two years, catching 60 passes and scoring seven touchdowns.

Tony now joins a huge transfer portal class by Mario Cristobal.

Welcome

Unless he returns kicks or some sleeper type transfer.. why spend on this dude versus developing your young talented WR’s and avoid losing them to the portal.

If a guy isn’t a difference maker not sure why a take like this is worth it
I think with the roster expansion they are just bringing in guys.

We don’t know if he is better Than Toney. For all we know Toney Starts day 1 doesn’t look back. Right now Toney is Slot 1.
Even more reason to bring him in, if Toney is slot 1 then RayRay ain’t good. This guy is def better than RayRay, which means u r gonna have competition.

Simply put, the staff swung and missed a ton in the Spring portal. It definitely wasn't for a lack of effort, but man what an ugly result.

It appears to me that guys who left their situations were looking to be “the guy” at their next spot… and were looking to be told or recruited as such. And with a few exceptions we like the “by committee approach”. Seems these dudes want some guarantees both financial and snaps.

Why would Mario take a FAU cast off? Someone much smarter than me needs to explain it to me in simple terms.

I read somewhere that we aren't close to the scholarship limit. Assuming that is the case, we shouldn't have any issues bringing in guys like this. If the young guys can't beat out an unheralded Cincinnati transfer, then maybe we are weeding out the deadweight.

I think everyone on the board agrees that this is a make or break year for Mario. We crucified him for standing pat and not improving the secondary, so we should give him so kudos for working to fill in the gaps this season.

Mario doesn't have the luxury to wait and see if the freshmen are ready to go. He needs to win this season, so I appreciate that he is raising the talent floor, even if I don't think Johnson is much of a difference-maker.

All the Big 10/SEC WR1s decided to stay put for now.

BUT, under the landmark case of Lucas v. Wisconsin, any of those guys can "unenroll" from their current institutions and enroll at Miami any time they like.

Of course, our players could do the same.

Maybe...just maybe...certain WR1s are doing their due diligence on Carson Beck's recovery.

Posted in another thread in case you want to see production profile compared to a few guys last year…

He had 48 receptions out of 73 targets - 65.7% with an aDOt of 6.3. So he doesn’t stretch the field and isn’t efficient.

For comparison, Restrepo had 69 (nice) receptions out of 100 targets; 69% with an aDOt of 11.27 yards. Even JG was more efficient with a 9.4 ADot as one of our primary screen catchers.

Either he’s not as fast as 4.3, can’t catch, can’t get open or the QB couldn’t throw the ball that far because he’s really inefficient and is 2.5 yards less per target than our lowest WR last year. Restrepo and JG averaged over 9 yards aDot even with TVD…
His longest reception last year was 23 yards 🤮

No, I was definitively told that Lofton is the best RUNNING BACK on the team...
Running Back…Wide Receiver same same. They both block, run, and catch.

And is Jeremiah an elite human being? Because Lofton helps grannies cross the street and gets kittens out of trees

Grown men on CFB rosters win. We’ve seen that story play out countless times at Miami. You open with ND then UF..you need experience guys. Especially in the slot. Ray & Toney beat him then u know they’re special
