Chris Simms edge rankings

A few guys that need to have the brakes pumped on'em (no pause)...

Jeremiyah Love.

In the most important game of he and his team's season...10 carries, 33 yards, add another 4 catches for 26 yards.

He scored more multi-touchdown games than single touchdown games. But in the most important...the biggest...no touchdowns. He might be a good pro...but he'll never be that good. He's also a nerd.

Another one. Arvelle Reese.

This man has made six solo tackles since Mario Cristobal last regular season loss. SIX. It is April 1st, and he has six tackles. Three in the game his team lost...0 in the B1G Title Game...and 1 in his final game in the Big House. Get lost.

All I know, is that our guy...

Sack in the Natty
Sack against OSU
3 against Texas A&M
2 against Pitt to close out the season and assure us a playoff appearance.
To kick off the season, in the biggest regular season game of the year for both teams...sack.

Get out of here with Arvelle Reese.

re: arm length.

The GMs that take players for measurables over production - in this case, arm length as a deciding factor - guys like Trent Baalke taking Travon Walker (very good player) over Aidan Hutchinson (top 100 NFL player and going to be an All-Decade player) are no longer employed. I don't think Bain is waiting long, but anyone taking Arvelle Reese above him is not going to have a job for very long.

In addition to Bain's large sack (total), he also had an interception in that big game.

I could not agree with you more with regard to your last paragraph. I see so many GMs overthink their way out of a job. Just take the best players available (within reason relative to the roster of course) and let the coach adjust the system to fit the players. Whatevs....Arvelle is a stupid name to boot.

Bain #2, Mesidor #3

I don't have issue with Bailey at one I guess. It's a legit conversation. For me I can acknowledge the best first step at the position is bailey. Without knowing his arm length I'd imagine he's more prototypical. I can acknowledge at times reubens arm length has been an issue with finishing plays. You'd see it at times where he'd be in position for a sack or a tfl and he'd bounce off the player. It wasn't a common issue at all. But once in a blue it would occur. That's an arm length issue. All that being said Reuben is by far the better overall talent. Bailey is basic against the run and struggles in space while reuben is dominant in that category. Mesi is definitely 3rd. But when it comes to the league I can see Mesi having a better career then Reese and bailey quite possibly. To me reese looks like a jag. Screams Dion Jordan...

I agree with you and @BoxingRobes 10000%.

I wish I could remember who made this point recently, but the point was that 2/3 of the NFL GM’s make draft decisions based on which player will keep the GM in a job. To us that means winning is how you keep the job, but to this former player it meant making the picks that can be sold to the team owner as “smart” or “safe” picks. Needless to say the best GM’s are drafting to win, not to just keep a job. But that is less than half the GM’s in the league.

All that to say that selecting Love and Reese, who have NFL measurables, is safe for the GM. Then if/when the player flames out, the GM is able to blame the coach for not developing Arvell Reese, as opposed to the truth which is that he never should have been picked that high if anyone watched their most important games. However, taking a player who has shorter arms or is 3 inches shorter in height, is a risk for the GM and his job.

And when looking at production, only the important games should matter because those are the games when players face off against future NFL players. Who cares about 3 sacks against Univ of Toledo (just as an example), or 190 yards rushing against Northern Illinois. if I was a GM those games, and therefore inflated season stats, tell me nothing. But getting your a*s kicked by Markel Bell, or being help to 33 yards against a future NFL defensive line, or short arming a pass over the middle against UM in a playoff game (looking at you Tate), well that means a lot.
