Free Safety is DEFINITELY not the position for a guy who is bad on the deep ball. At least at CB could conceivably be hidden as a Tampa 2 corner or always receive help over the top.

Free Safety is the last line of defense. Ask the Denver Broncos about having a guy with bad ball skills as the last line.

Deon is decent. Not all world. Rayshawn isn't bad either.

Never seen Corn on a deep ball so I wouldn't know, but he was an offensive stud in HS and a punt returner which is another gig reading the ball in the air.

I think Tracy is probably our best guy in that circumstance, although that isn't saying very much at all.

Everybody else is terrible.

Uh did you not watch him in highschool? He has elite speed and range that would be great to have in the middle of the field along side bush. He is athletic but has stiff hips IMO for a corner. So safety would be his best bet. And when does he get beat on the deep ball? Only corner I remember getting beat on plays like that was Antonio Crawford and he is gone.

I doubt that, I believe he has an even higher ceiling playing safety than corner. Regardless he is a beast at corner and locked down rashad green last year

He might be a good in the box/SS type. He can cover TEs, get physical in the run game, play underneath zones, blitz, etc...Playing the deep ball isn't just about speed and range. Remember, at FS you're essentially a zone player on every play that's not cover-0. You have to be able to think and read 2-3 guys in your zone, not get caught up looking in the backfield, make calls, and be good able to track the ball in the air. I'd rather have Artie be an athlete and run with his receiver and not have to think.

Interestingly, for the SFL Express, it was T. Howard that played safety. Guess who's shown to be our best corner at playing the ball in the air?

I actually like him in the slot. He has the speed to match up with the slot WR and backs and the size to handle TEs and bigger WR. I'm not sure how good he would be as a cover 3 safety unless he was playing SS where he would still play in the slot and play more hook/curl than deep third. I just don't like his instincts with the ball in the air. Don't mistake athleticism for being a good cover corner. Artie is definitely athletically gifted enough to play match up man, but he has a hard time locating the ball. It shows up when he plays deep 3rds in cover 3, too

Everyone remember that 10-quarter stretch last year (@ VT, vs. UNC, first half vs. FSU) where we actually looked like a legitimate team again for a brief period? With what would've been this program's biggest win a decade hanging in the balance at halftime against the Noles, Golden went right back to his comfort zone and became the soft-shouldered, unwaveringly conservative, program-ruining ******* we all know and loathe. It cost us everything.

He'll run all the corner blitzes and press-man coverage imaginable against 20+ point underdogs, but will revert right back to having McCord and Owens dropping 20 yards into coverage against slot receivers for the FSU and Clemson games. Anyone getting their hopes up that the most stubborn coach in CFB history is willing to become ultra aggressive and essentially admit how wrong he's been for 4+ years is only setting themselves up for disappointment.
