CHASESMITH 6th Year? Rumors of return?

Love how everyone knows better than the coaches. Yeah, played the lesser player cause didn’t want to play the better. Wanted to simply keep other teams in game rather than blow them out. Last 7-8 games of season were big boy games, so not the time to go off script.

You LD? Cuz I never said a lesser player. But 100,000,000,000% lesser potential.

If your think Wiley and Popo have the same ceiling you should never ever respond to any of my posts again.

****, potential. We’re trying to win games. Played in national championship game & along the way won at TAMU, best Ohio State & Ole Miss, so whatever coaches did worked.

F potential... OK brainiac... just say you don't understand how critical developing players is and move on...

Two things can be done at once - win & develop. Believe we’ve done a decent job at most positions. Popo got significant snaps. Left because he wasn’t going to be handed starting job. Wiley was a true freshman who played special teams. Rare that a freshman gets many snaps at LB. In this case, trust DC to know what he’s doing over folks on a message board.

Now that popo is gone. Do you think that the coaches wished they got Wiley more reps?

Coaches always second guess things like this.

Getting him enough reps for the game to slow down and so that you know how much you want to count on him this year should have been his goal for the year. I don't think they came close to doing that. Greentree has fooled us more times than we can count. Remember Lyle and JoJo were our best players before the season began. Roster foresight and evaluation is more critical with NIL than ever.

Believe we had four LBs in rotation for two spots. We played a lot of close games & can’t just throw guys in to get their feet wet. That’s why you play them on special teams & it’s how Canes have developed players dating back to Jimmy Johnson. Wiley seems like a great kid & prospect, but trust the DC on how he decides to develop him.

Come on man... we had the 6th largest margin of victory in college last year...

Popo wasnt great.

Yeah, maybe should have started Wiley & gotten him ready for ‘26. Surprised didn’t get Nickle more snaps. How do we know what we got. Pringle, Moore . . . Day should have all been logging more snaps. Forget about trying to sneak into the playoffs & then a row of Top 10 teams - play & develop the kids, **** it!

Marcelin played a lot on special teams as well.

Chase Smith really came in second half of season. Awesome that he is coming back. And the last two seasons he seems to have avoided the injury bug.

Why do you think Wiley won’t be developed? We have had only 1 year of Hetherman as a LB coach, in that one year Wes was named 3rd team ALL ACC and Toure was named honorable mention All ACC. Miami hasn’t had two All ACC LB since 2019 with Shaq and Pinckney.

Did you not see evidence of player development at LB during the season? What’s the true issue here? Is it you just believe Wiley will not be give a far shot to play at LB because you believe Mario will not allow Hetherman to start a player at LB who is not a senior?

Do you believe Wiley is the only dynamic athlete in the LB room and the only hope of having elite play at the position?

Have you not watched Bonner play?
I think the staff very stupidly backed themselves in a corner of ONLY having 1 option that actually truly can elevate this unit from last seasons performance. It was a very bad decision not to hit the portal at LB. And it was also bad decision to not have developed Wiley more during the season imo.
And they are risking what will be 2 of our 4 highest rotation LBs on possibly two of the most often injured LBs in all of CFB (would be tough to beat them for this honor given nobody else is likely starting a 7th and 8th yr player). And no I've already said I don't expect Wiley to substantially out snap Chase which is what we need. I absolutely feel they will default to age.

Last yr DB was the major weakness. We went out and brought in like 8 portal DBs. This yr LB and TE were the major weakness. We went and brought in 0 portal TE/LB. That's my point.

LOL... No one said start him. No one said play him in tight games. That's just you being dishonest and pretending that getting Wiley more snaps equals starting him and losing which means you know your argument is weak AF.

I understand your concern, but I just don’t see them starting Chase at WILL. In an interview D Money said the staff wants to trust their development and evals. Being there investing substantial NIL into Bonner and Wiley, who both actually play WILL, everything tells me it will be one of them as the starter opposite Toure.

Sounds like they really like what they have at the position you believe is weak. I get it, you think Toure is not good in coverage, not athletic and you wish this staff upgrade, but the reality is Hetherman and the rest of this staff love this guy and they trust him to lead the defense. Toure elevated his game as the season went on and actually made some solid plays in coverage, the hit and game winning pass breakup against Texas A&M as well a similar pass breakup against Ohio State.

Your comparison of the 24 DB room and the 25 LB room is a major stretch. 24 literally had 2 total playable DBs returning on the roster in OJ and Brown where at least 8 players see the field every game. They only play 4 LBs in the rotation and they are returning 4 who they clearly believe in, two of which helped lead the team to the national championship and a top 5 defense.

I see this situation very similar to the receiver and DT position last season. No one expected Tony to have a real impact before the season started, and at DT everyone cried about not bringing in a big body DT and the DTs on the roster were not good enough to make a run. Both of those fears were proven to be just class CIS overreactions.

Now TE I can understand your concern, I would like to add one more guy, but I don’t think a starter is necessary. Seems like the staff trust Luka Gilbert and are giving him the keys.

We added 3 WRs in portal and 1 DT in portal entering last yr though….

It also ignores that LB was actually genuinely pretty loaded in portal. And there was a reason everyone was hoping hard for Biles/Uluave/others…

I am pretty sure Chase Smith played Will Lb this season. I mean hey I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure. He was mainly the sub for Wes, and Popo was the sub for Toure. Idk why it’s such a certainty they wouldn’t go Toure and Wiley at Mike and Chase and Bonner at Will….

No, just trust DC & staff.

Or at the very least can't get caught by surprised by the Aguirre transfer, imo should have been out in front of that situation.

Chase Smith isn't a modern Lawrence Taylor but he's valuable. Need some experience at LB and he played fairly well this season.
I was so pleasantly surprised with how he played this year. Whenever he was in there he was around the ball and arrived with force. Its great to see how he has stuck to it and developed and has made himself into a very good contributor to a great team.

It seemed like Chase n Mo got better as the season went on. Both have had injuries they’ve had to recover from. Both should benefit from a healthy off season of reps.

I did hear a lot of positive about Wiley. At least in terms of he’s a specimen that really pops at times. Hopefully he gets mental side and communication side down with another off season as well
