I understand your concern, but I just don’t see them starting Chase at WILL. In an interview D Money said the staff wants to trust their development and evals. Being there investing substantial NIL into Bonner and Wiley, who both actually play WILL, everything tells me it will be one of them as the starter opposite Toure.
Sounds like they really like what they have at the position you believe is weak. I get it, you think Toure is not good in coverage, not athletic and you wish this staff upgrade, but the reality is Hetherman and the rest of this staff love this guy and they trust him to lead the defense. Toure elevated his game as the season went on and actually made some solid plays in coverage, the hit and game winning pass breakup against Texas A&M as well a similar pass breakup against Ohio State.
Your comparison of the 24 DB room and the 25 LB room is a major stretch. 24 literally had 2 total playable DBs returning on the roster in OJ and Brown where at least 8 players see the field every game. They only play 4 LBs in the rotation and they are returning 4 who they clearly believe in, two of which helped lead the team to the national championship and a top 5 defense.
I see this situation very similar to the receiver and DT position last season. No one expected Tony to have a real impact before the season started, and at DT everyone cried about not bringing in a big body DT and the DTs on the roster were not good enough to make a run. Both of those fears were proven to be just class CIS overreactions.
Now TE I can understand your concern, I would like to add one more guy, but I don’t think a starter is necessary. Seems like the staff trust Luka Gilbert and are giving him the keys.
