CFP moving to 24 teams

“Since expanding to 12, the only team benefitting from expansion was Ohio State.”

Easily falsifiable. Miami benefitted; as did: Ole Miss + Alabama getting revenge for regular season Ls, JMU + Tulane, Arizona State, Boise State, ND who was ranked 7th in the playoffs in ‘24, SMU, and IU got better transfers for ‘25 by going to the playoffs in ‘24.

BTW this ALREADY HAPPENED TWO YEARS AGO…….JOG YOUR MEMORIES….THEY RANKED A 9-3 ALABAMA OVER A 10-2 MIAMI FOR THE LAST PLAYOFFS SPOT …… NO ONE FELT BAD FOR MIAMI OR WERE EVEN MAD @ ABOUT IT….

They would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for Clemson beating SMU in the ACC-CCG. So since it literally already happened, that shows the potential for it to keep happening, in various ways, if they were to stick at twelve.

Then everybody, including dumb ND fans so most of them, let themselves get caught up in a ND-Miami debate meanwhile Alabama jumped ND for barely beating an Auburn team—a move the committee explicitly made to avoid Miami jumping Alabama if Alabama got crushed by UGA like they did. ….. because a 10-3 Alabama WITH A LOSS TO FSU on the road — who miami beat on the road — was inexplicable if the two teams were next to each other. They sacrificed ND at the bubble altar.

Two explicitly corrupt moves to benefit Alabama, after they did the same thing the year before to benefit Alabama instead of FSU LOL. So it can happen w/ 4 or w/ 12 and w/ the BCS it’s just lunacy bordering on football astrology

Just some more info on how previous years have played out, at least with AP poll
If they put a few 10-2 or 11-1 G6 teams in the 20s instead of 8-4 P4 teams, there will be little issue and everyone will come to enjoy it is my stance. The floor will end up being 3 losses 99% of the time.

9-3 (7-1) Clemson winning in the conference championship game already got themselves in the playoffs. Three to nine 9-3 teams every year doesn’t sound so bad to me if it means that we’re done inflating records w/ FCS opponents.

Could not help but notice that both this report as well as Thamel yesterday did not say “exclusively,” broadcast. Reports on back to back days w/o details is super sus

Especially considering that they seem much further away than 95% done like was said yesterday; and the exclusive negotiating window ended last Friday.

Looked it up out of curiosity. Only one 8-4 P4 team was ranked in the top 24 in the past two years heading into the playoff.

2025 Iowa was 8-4 ranked 23rd.

& they could’ve been bumped out for 11-2 North Texas or 9-2 (soon to be 10-2) Navy if that spot actually had real stakes.

Boooo, as long as we’re in the ACC at stay at even 80% of what we are, it’s almost inconceivable that we could lose 4 games, which is basically what we’d have to do to drop out of the top 24. All this does is even further strip out meaning from the regular season. SMU in all honesty should’ve been the end of our season last year and we deserved it, but we got saved by the 12 team format. Now you want to double it, regular season officially has no meaning. Might as well have the whole year be a March madness bracket, because nothing before the playoffs matter.
Yeah I mean aside from the money, we are at an advantage playing in a weaker ACC. Just handle business and we are a playoff lock every year. Can even rest players with this schedule. Not full games really but a lot of games will allow Miami to sit starters in second halves.
I mean we should be a practical lock in a 12 team anyway. If we stay good, we shouldn’t be losing two ACC games as long as FSU stays down. This isn’t good logic at all.

And now we see what Fox is getting paid. Still don’t see the word exclusive, wonder how the sub-licensing will all workout

Though there is still significant work to be done on paper, and everything is still subject to board approval across all involved parties, the agreement is a major step closer to doubling the postseason path to the national title for next year.

The CFP and ESPN have been negotiating a new deal for the network to remain its broadcast partner in a seismic move that is also expected to eliminate the lucrative Power 4 conference championship games and start the season a week earlier.

Though final details have yet to be announced, discussions about the 24-team field have included 19 at-large bids, the Power 4 conference champions as determined by each league, plus the highest-ranked Group of 6 team.

Also on Friday, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel that the average additional payment that ESPN will pay for the expanded playoff is $345 million annually for the next five years. That is in addition to the average of $1.3 billion annually over that time ESPN is already paying.

Of that new $345 million, ESPN will only essentially be paying $205 million, as they are getting back $140 million annually from the cancelation of the three power conference championship games that ESPN owns the television rights to broadcast.

Sources also told Thamel that the amount Fox is expected to get back for the cancellation of the Big Ten title game -- which it owns the television rights to -- is in the $50 million range annually.

We really valuing a couple rounds and WEEKS of CFP games that would be deemed “exciting” yet devalue the other 14 weeks in a season as if most 1st round playoff games aren’t blowouts anyways lmao

I mean **** even in the 12 team playoff there have been some really really lopsided wins and the top seeds always win anyways. Miami was an outlier and it was because everyone wanted to trash us for losing to Louisville and SMU, we were WAY better than 10th last year.

This wasn’t even for the FBS. It was for the P4. More P4 schools will make it in and the exact same amount of G6 schools will make it in (1) so the P4 has a 23/64 chance (more than 35% chance!) to make the playoffs while the G6 has a 1/78 chance (less than 1.5%)

I would be in more agreement if it was something like:

- each team that finished as #1 in their conference gets an automatic bid (P4 schools guaranteed a Bye/Home field) (10 spots taken right there), each P4 school to finish 2nd in their conference will also get an automatic bid. (4 more spots taken)

- 10 at large

If it stood right now: automatic bids would be

- UGA + Alabama (SEC)
- Miami + Wake (ACC)
- Indiana + UCLA (BIG10)
- Boise state (P12)
- UNLV (MWC)
- Western Michigan (MAC)
- liberty (CUSA)
- BYU + Texas Tech
- Memphis (American)
- JMU (sunbelt)

10 at-large is still too many but at least this gives equality to conference representation, it would make sense a P4 school would get 2 in with the size of conferences now.

It would CERTAINLY be better than 23 at large bids for the P4, which is just disgusting. I don’t care if a G6 school would get their *** beat by Oregon or Bama or whoever, the chance to represent should still be there and that should be why the playoff is expanded. If only the P4 is essentially eligible for this then this expansion was a waste anyways “oh well 12/138 teams making the playoffs is the lowest % in sports” stfu, most misleading numbers in my lifetime. We all know it’s essentially a 11/64 chance right now (almost a 1/6) and what’s wrong with that?

Who even cares about big matchups at that point ? A BIG matchup implies high stakes, not just two name brands that everyone has seen a million times playing eachother ain’t ****. “You’ll still watch it though!” Yeah and I watch the NFL too but I know that when the ravens beat/lose to the browns that there’s a bunch of games remaining and the win/loss barely even matters outside of just me not wanting my team to lose. “Well there will be more high stakes matchups in the playoffs with 24 teams!” Yeah and that will last all of 2 weeks and then you’re back to the same elite programs remaining and you had to wait til, what, end of November to see a meaningful football game ?

This sports issue stemmed from money (richer programs taking advantage of NIL loopholes and gouging smaller programs for their 2-3 good players, agents creating bidding wars to drive up the prices for players, guys sitting out/opting out to transfer the following year to a program with more $$$) and it is being now being further diminished for additional money at the expense of what’s college football has been ABOUT for 100 years, corporate profit and greed should’ve never made its way into the sport and now its taken over and it’s decaying this sport quicker than anything else could.

I’ll never understand the appeal that the powers that be to turn CFB into the NFL at virtually any angle they can.

I don't know how anyone can consider themselves a MIA fan & simultaneously be against CFP expansion; MIA making the NC as a #10 seed, & OSU winning it as a #8 seed 2 yrs ago, is enough evidence for why CFP expansion was necessary. We don't know yet if a 24-team CFP is too many teams; it will take a few yrs after its implementation to figure that out. If lower seeds are routinely getting blown out in the1st rd. then maybe it's too many, but right now it's just speculation.

The notion that CFP expansion is what led to the CFB regular season getting devalued is also insanity; the wheels for that were set in motion decades ago, when college athletic depts first began to adopt destructive spending cycles.

Resource imbalance was the main catalyst for unequal media rights contracts & revenue distribution amongst the conferences; which then was further compounded by player salaries. The logical conclusion was conference realignment & the regionality being removed from CFB in favor of a duopolistic P2. This helps to explain why teams from the P2 are reluctant to schedule anything but cupcakes for their OOC schedule & have playoff or bust expectations. It's also debatable whether the quality of the regular season is being preserved if a team's season is over in Sept. or Oct. because of injury, weather, or some unforeseen circumstance; this is especially true in the transfer portal & NIL era, where the avg P4 team undergoes roster turnover at a 40% rate, yr over yr. Using MIA as the most recent example, even if Beck had a full offseason, it still would've taken close to half the season for the team to fully gel & become a cohesive unit. Denying a team that ends up playing its best football late in the season a chance at the CFP would be a travesty.

It's also misguided to expect the ACC & BIG12 to have equal representation in a 4-team playoff; those days are over. In a sport that has consolidated power in a P2, they would possess the ability to shoehorn their teams into the CFP regardless of whether there are 4-teams or 24-teams. The only difference is with more teams the ACC & BIG12 are now competing with 2nd & 3rd tier teams from the P2, instead of 1st tier, which is obviously more favorable.

In the last 4 decades, CFB has undergone significant structural changes; some of those changes have been beneficial to MIA, & some have not. CFB today, is more like the pro game than it's ever been, & it's only natural that it's postseason eventually reflects that. Clinging to a purist's perspective in light of these changes, is refusal to accept reality & adapt.

Doubling the playoff spots and increasing total playoff games from 11 games to 23 games (>double) for ONLY a 26% increase in revenue from ESPN - $1.3B/yr to $1.645B... and technically all it ACTUALLY does is take away conferences control of conference championship week and hands it to ESPN. Technically the conferences TODAY could announce a champions and choose the 2nd-4th best to compete in their "champ week" game and try to let one of them earn/solidify their CFP spot.... So yeah not a lot of sense being made

However I'll just continue to say Conference Realignment is THE critical need here. This setup at 24 teams is ****ed BECAUSE there are two "elite" conferences, two mediocre conferences, then everyone else (G6) with extremely unequal quality of scheduling and conference strength. If you move to like 7-8 smaller divisions totalling 56-72teams, you can make the 24 team playoff make a lot more sense. Like just simple match could be 8 divisions that are equally strength and regional with protected rivalries in CFP competition, top 2 per division get playoff spots and 8 more "at-large" like you can make this far better

Alabama was the biggest scam job ever! They shouldn’t have been in the playoffs last year but neither should OU the way they were okaying
