CFP moving to 24 teams

I'm really curious to see how programs handle this as far as coaching decisions. The line between a sh*t season and a successful one is a little more blurred now.
  • Does Franklin get the entire season at PSU if there's still a realistic path into the playoff?
  • Same with Brian Kelly?
  • Mullen probably has three straight playoff appearances at Florida. Does one bad season still get him fired?
  • If Riley makes the playoff last year under this format, how different is the conversation around him now?
  • With Baylor's start, are we talking about Aranda's playoff chances instead of his hot seat?
  • Same for Fickell?
Especially when you factor in buyouts. For FSU, the question shifts from “can Norvell win a title?” to “can we buy another year or two?” by putting more money into the roster. Win eight or nine games. Sneak into the playoff. Let the buyout come down. Fans might still want him gone, but “we made the playoff” gives the administration some protection.

For everyone complaining about the 24 team playoff, saying it's "ruining" the sport and will make the regular season meaningless, you're still going to watch so STFU. I'm all for a 24 team playoff. People complained about the 12 team playoff, but had it not been in place, Miami would not have gotten in and made it all the way to the title game last season. If an 8-4 team gets in, goes all the way and wins it, then they deserved it.

I just don't understand the "But my regular season is meaningless now" crowd.

- A huge percentage of teams in the NFL make the playoffs (isn't it like 40%)?. NFL seems to be doing fine in terms of viewership and popularity of regular season games.
- 21% of NCAA division 1 basketball teams make the March Madness field. March Madness is arguably the greatest tournament in sports.

Moving to 24 team CFP means 17% of FBS teams make the playoff. I have a feeling fans will still pack stadiums, people will still watch televised games, and all will be fine.
I don’t watch the NFL because the games don’t really matter. 24 team playoff takes away meaningful games. Just like the NFL is college going to start resting players the last 1-2 games of the season because they clinched the playoffs already?

One of the reasons March Madness is so captivating is seeing those underdog Cinderella teams making deep runs.

Maybe they’d have no shot to win it all, but watching a 9-3 Kentucky team knock off a couple power programs to reach the semifinal would be pretty cool, IMO.

I don’t even disagree with folks saying the regular season will be less exciting. But the flip side is the potential for some really fun tournament games.

****, look at Miami last year. Every single Miami fan I interacted with walking out of the stadium at the SMU game looked like their mother just died and thought our season was over with. An expanded playoff format ended up allowing us to get in, and that playoff run brought joy to us at the level we haven't experienced in over 20 years.

I understand this means each individual game during the regular season has lower stakes. I still think a 24 team playoff is a net positive for CFB though.

I'm not a fan. I'd rather have conference championships and 12 or maybe 16 teams. 24 teams just seems too watered down to me. We all know it's just a way for them to put more $ec teams in... nothing more than that.

I will say that it will make December more fun. Army-Navy can only do so much.

LOL.....have fun watching Rutgers vs Vanderbilt in the BIG 10 vs SEC playoffs. Some real barnburners on deck.

Those fan bases would be stoked to finally play big games in those places. Atmosphere would be fun hypothetically .

Actual game though might be boring. But who knows?

Anyone feel CFP leaked this to get reactions?

Seems it doesn't have much support..
What "support" does it need?

The only support it needs is the "we're doing it because we get more money" crew that makes the decisions.

Don't worry though because they'll gladly pass the cost along to the fans in the form of higher ticket, concession, and jersey prices.
