CFB is more balanced

The only credit I’ll give Mario is he has always made the change for what was the weak link. But now the weak link is the identity he wants his offense to have. Idk if he will be able to let go of control and let who ever the OC is score points. Cam Ward changed to a lot of pass plays last year seems like Beck doesn’t

Unless he changes himself.. it is all moot

than at any time in history, coaching and scheming are at a premium. Which leads me to the glaring weakness of this program right now: offensive X’s and O’s. Everyone today has talent, but it’s more spread thin because of NIL. So the issues we have can’t be fixed by simply out-recruiting the competition. The days of loading your roster up and out-manning teams are over — just like thinking you can line up and out-physical opponents all game, winning 20–17.

Teams like Indiana out-scheme their talent by consistently creating open receivers and easy touchdowns through smart play design and mismatches.

Somebody needs to get ahold of the head caveman and explain how offensive football works in 2025. There are times in a game that call for physicality and simply beating the man in front of you — but there are also plenty of plays that require creativity and outthinking the coach on the other sideline.

Which brings me to my final point: Mario is a CEO-type coach who brings value mainly through recruiting and teaching offensive line play. That makes his hires enormously important. The first rule of leadership is to hire people smarter than yourself — and then let them work. On the offensive side, it really feels like people who lack the intelligence or understanding needed to run a modern offense have far too much input in the game plan.

Even Nick Saban realized he had to evolve a decade ago when offenses kept advancing and becoming harder to defend. On top of that, the game today is slanted toward the offense — yet we continue to run 1980s smash-mouth football, the exact style any defensive coordinator in America would prefer to face.

Like Al Golden, one side of the ball could be Mario’s undoing — ironically, the same side the head coach has the most input on. I really hope Mario can recognize this and get it through his thick cranium. The greatest coaches are always adapting and evolving. Fired coaches die on the hill of their identity.
I’m sure we agree on this with everything you’ve said. You think we should run an offense like Utah with their OC BECK? Idk if that type of offense would work here.

How many analysts are on staff? Who are they? What do they offer and does anyone listen to them?

I would love to see a real breakdown as to what Cignetti is doing there and why it looks so effortless. Mendoza is obviously a solid QB but come on lol they are pummeling people.
Well for starters they don't play their athletic equal. Yes they're good except Oregon they've had an easy schedule. Same with Ohio state

I agree conceptually, except he’s not a good CEO. He has no vision or appreciation for the nuances of the game. @k9cane said it best, teams with more talent need extra possessions, not less. Mario’s likely response would be, “But if I have more points I win, right?” He will never see that the parity you’re highlighting makes him vulnerable in closer games. As great as an OL coach as he might be, he can’t teach how to block 11 guys with 6 with any meaningful probability of success.

Go look at the NFL on how qbs/offense struggle in certain places and then magically they get rehabilitated under McVay, Shanahan, and O’Connell. Those offenses are the most creative/scheme friendly and the coaches are always adapting. No one plays caveman football in the NFL anymore. There is zero scheming guys open in our offense or creativity.

I get the point and I'm not here to defend him because what we have seen recently is not defensible but he is the CEO a coach in charge of a program problem is he's also putting himself in charge of the innovation department to use an example and thinks he still selling CDs. He's built the store it's strongg. He's got a really good HR department. He has a good security department I can't get out the way of innovating they will declare chapter 11-

He needs a couple of senior executives to call his bull**** and give a different point of you and if you can recognize that as a strength, not weakness, the turnaround can be complete. If not the board needs to recognize that their CEO has raised the floor and built a foundation that cant be allowed to crumble, but the ceiling is only 2 inches higher and they need to come on and build upon that foundation with somebody elseHe needs a couple of senior executives to call his bull**** and give a different point of you and if you can recognize that as a strength not a weakness the turnaround can be complete. Perfectly said Cribby. I made a comparison to Jim Harbaugh‘s 2020 season at Michigan, which was a complete failure for them. After that season, Jim did some serious inner thinking and changed his whole perspective and approach at Michigan, and of course that led to three straight playoff appearances and the national championship. It’s that type of true inner thinking and change, Mario has to do here if he wants this to be successful because the current path, isn’t working.

It seems we don't care what our opponents do on d. We are gonna run the same **** no matter what. Same plays, same speed, same old **** to shorten the game. Same predictable rb rotation. Same predictable ****** QB throws. Same predictable illegal motion, holding, unnecessary roughness. ******* ground hog day every week. We say "come and stop us" and everybody laughs and stuffs us in a locker.
This is it right here, I never see us scheme, the opponents, defense. I never see us attack the weaknesses shown by the opponents defense versus everyone attacking our weaknesses, which is what football is. That’s what Louisville did all game, but we never do that and that’s what’s starting to turn me against Mario. Smash Mouth football is a good thing when it’s needed or when it’s there, but other than that, you also have to scheme against the weaknesses of the defense. It’s mind blowing to me that in 2025 we aren’t doing that. It’s arrogant play calling at Best and it has to change!

Its so funny how all off season people hype up the roster then when the players show they are mid a coach has to be fired lol

All off season this board brushed off us losing literally every starting offensive weapon we had and now dawson is just trash lol

Mario is a mid coach but what everyone is missing is how in year 4 this roster doesn’t match the elite recruiting status people give him. We should be way more worried about his evaluations than his Xs and Os, one was expected but his supposed strengths is whats really failing us to me

Evaluations or getting the guys through the door? We've missed some very good players that we wanted, at positions of great need.

We need to get them signed.

The roster is worthy of hype but I said 10-2 / 9-3 because of the Mario effect. I know this movie too well.

I'm in agreement with both of you on this.

In the offseason, I singled out the lack of depth at WR, and that we needed Daniels to be healthy and Trader to be productive. I also mentioned that the RB room has good- but not great- players.

As far as the LBs are concerned, I've thought they've sucked for years, and that this year would be somewhat better, but that they would struggle in the mid-range passing game.

That being said, the roster "proved itself" to a large degree by winning against good competition. With injuries piling up, poor execution, and nearly non-existent in-game adjustments, we just laid a massive, unmitigated egg.

How do we fix the penalties? How many of our drives have been killed by them?

I think our offense has issues. But we’re trying to run a power based offense that wears down opposing teams but are constantly getting put behind the sticks due to penalties which kills all momentum.

Always felt playing with more pace/tempo would help fixing penalties and tightness as the game wears on.

It's what I have been saying. Pure ARROGANCE
