Carson Beck ( not hurt more)

Too much Georgia talk/slurping due to it being Georgia podcasters, but good insight into his evolution from Freshman to RS Senior and spring at Miami
I love Carson Beck and think he will have a good season but I liked how the interviews acted like we didn’t just have the #1 QB and #1 pick in the draft just last season

I’m also old enough to remember when UF owned UGA and they were nothing before Kirby Smart arrived, the same with Alabama and Nick Saban. the pompous attitude of these other fan bases

It was a LOT about his time at UGA. The interviewers are clearly fans of UGA and refer to it as “we” and “us” consistently, Lots of talk about specific SEC games and playoff games.

Beck talked about getting hit and hurt and how he went back in the game while barely being able to hold a football. And being told that his elbow was fine when he knew it was not. There was no follow up to this obvious controversial issue. He also talked bout why he returned to college after his third season so he could win a championship.

They discussed seemingly every player on the UGA roster that Beck played with and referred to every single one as a “freak”. The interviewers sounded like Chris Farley from the SNL sketches when he was just a fan of the interviewee and started every question with “you remember that one time…”

All that to say Beck comes off as mature. He seems laid back but he promised his team a comeback against Georgia Tech last season and wanted to show the UGA fans who left the stadium early. He is clearly very competitive but in a quieter way than Cam. I don’t think we will see off season videos of Beck trash talking Shadeur Sanders. But he believes in his ability and seems very happy to be at UM, despite very, very, very few questions being asked about UM. I understand he didn’t go through spring practice but he should have been asked about specific UM players just as he was about half the UGA roster.

Beck comes off well. But I see no reason to ever watch another interview with those 2 guys asking the questions. Too many fanboy questions, but maybe that is their format. I don’t know and will never have another one of their interviews as a point of comparison.

Thanks for the recap, much appreciated. Not having to listen to slobbering UGA fanboys is a good way to start the weekend.

Great interview. Can you imagine TVD trying to function in an interview like this? Whoa.

Oh, and that note about him falling down the stairs within 24 hours post surgery. Double whoa.
My favorite part was them talking about how he got everybody set up. Was in control of audibles and his line protections. How he was always in the right play and him saying hes dedicated to film and the mental part.I feel alot better about him he seems like a laid back dude. Wants to win a title he has alot on the line is he the #1 pick he was in 23 or was 24 on him. I think he is the #1 pick next year 24 and 3 as a starter. All depends on his health too. The biggest thing about Beck i think hes going to play more structred than Cam did. Before yall trip thats nothin bad about Cam hes good at scrambling around making of the script plays! Big year for us. Go Canes

Ok, podcast is an hour-plus. It’s worth listening to as there’s more to him and the perception may be a bit off. Says he prefers avoiding the limelight, which may explain why his influencer girlfriend is in the past. Also may be the reason behind sitting for this podcast.

Podcast is called Built 4 More . . . faith-based and out of Jacksonville. Co-host is big UGA fan Pastor Joby Martin – also coaches football at the Christian school Beck first attended and Beck’s mother was kindergarten teacher to two of his kids; other host is Denny Thompson, a QB trainer out of Jacksonville who is extremely close to Beck – attends all his games, accompanied him to LA for the elbow surgery . . . So, these are Beck’s guy and this is first lengthy sit-down since leaving Georgia . . . podcasts typically focus on athletes’ faith and adversity – guests have included Anthony Richardson, Brock Purdy, Kirk Herbstreit, etc.

Cliff notes:

  • Lot of Dawg talk to get through and rehashing big games against Bama, Auburn, Texas. Roster loaded with #1 picks, Kirby is the master of preparation (though says Miami practices just as hard and follow the same script). The good Pastor (Dawg fan) forces the reliving of glory days.
  • Rehashes last play of half in SEC title game against Alabama. Trying to wing a Hail Mary and got crushed, felt something in elbow pop, slammed to ground and also messed his back up. Doesn’t offer details, but implies folks tried convincing him nothing was wrong, even though in locker room he couldn’t grip a ball. Assumption being someone thought it was a temporary nerve issue. Stood on sideline during second half. Gunner Stockton get blown up on game’s next to last play and Kirby screams wanting to know if he can go in and take a snap, hand off. So does it with just one hand and win the game.
  • Elbow rehab started 3 days after the injury – required to get extension and range of motion back before medical team would perform surgery. Gets to LA and surgeon says not good enough. So 4 days of painful, hard rehab before doc agreed to do surgery.
  • Denny Thompson, his QB coach, is the person accompanying on the trip. Xmas Eve, day after surgery, leaving to fly home and Beck slips and bounces down a flight of stairs. Fortunate not to ruin the elbow repair.
  • Unfortunately, he’s not asked about his parting ways with Georgia or his Miami decision. Or specifics of the elbow injury and repair procedure.
  • Likes the freedom he sees in Miami’s offense, but then says everyone runs the same plays – just get the best player the ball. Says guys are fun and Miami has players.
  • Prides himself on preparation, mental aspect of the position, check downs, ability to process after the snap, etc.
  • Spring practice was awkward, new setting/players and he couldn’t throw. Worked on chemistry and connecting with teammates, mental reps, picking a player or two to focus on each practice . . . came away thinking he might like to be a coach down the road.
  • Not sure when this was recorded, but says he’s doing good, tossing a ball around.
  • Big on leadership abilities. Says careful to be respectful, but go ahead and lead - i.e. follow me. Serve teammates and make them better. Just cares about winning. Build trust and respect.
  • What he might tell Miami fans -- Feels he is a misunderstood person. Lot of stuff is made up . . . Claims he is a ferocious worker and will exhaust self till nothing is left. Has big plans.
  • Young man is bright, articulate, seasoned in the college game and quietly confident.

I found it interesting when he said that he had been convinced there was nothing wrong with his elbow, when in fact he knew it was blown out. Can we assume by that point his arm had been shot up and coaches/doctors told him his elbow was fine?

Shannon Dawson made the joke about Beck having played in multiple SEC championships while our biggest game was the Pop Tart Bowl. He wasn’t wrong

Yes. Georgia hid the injury and ran him back out there for another game.
