Hypothetically speaking if both of these guys play absolutely amazing year one lets say freshman AA level at left tackle and right tackle does the need for Matthew's decrease? Let's say they both are starters. I think they both are coming in ready to play and I think we're going to be absolutely amazed at how great they play.

It’s a fair question, that people won’t want to consider, because of NIL allocation.
Let’s say hypothetically they both start at the money positions on the OL, Tackle, as freshmen. If they are actually that good then it means UM will need to pay a lot of NIL money at that position, and likely won’t be able to allocate to Matthews what he will definitely receive from another school. NIL has to be considered like a salary cap league. No NFL team is paying top dollar for 2 offensive tackles and then drafting another in the 1st round and paying that amount of money to 3 players when only 2 are on the field.

But there are lots of hypotheticals floating around here with the biggest being that Cantwell and Cogdon both start as true freshmen. But if that happens, I think your question is extremely valid. Of course the “move one to guard” or “it’s not my money” arguments will be made almost immediately. But players like Cantwell and Matthews are not moving to guard. They know how much an NFL tackle makes compared to a guard and its very, very different money. And Cogdon sure doesn’t look like a guard to me at 6”7” or whatever he is.

Cantwell / Ervin *

Also I don’t think matthews is a day1 starter so realistically he would probably be waiting a year? Probably rotate in some before he’s an official starter

If that happens there’s a chance the kid doesn’t want to come here anyways since he doesn’t see an avenue to the field year one. Short sighted but you never know

Play Matthews on the punting team. He has to block better than Bauman...

How much money would we pay to have that punt-block back?

You sign everyone and let the cream rise to the top. Competition breeds success. Even if we only sign Matthews at T this year, there is a log jam with Cantwell, Cogdon, Ervin and Matthews in back to back classes. Guys will either have to wait, play another position or they will transfer.

Until they are here and competing, we don't know what they truly are capable of at this level. Not to mention you have potential injuries. So you always constantly stack talent.

And money is not an issue. It wasn't before and it sure as **** isn't now after our recent run in the playoffs.

While top tier OT's in the league do make more than top tier guards, both are well paid. Personally, I loved that Samson sat and STAYED rather than transferred while he fought for reps at guard. He was a 5 star OT prospect coming out of HS at 6'6" and 330. If an OL prospect isn't willing to play another position other than OT, pass. Samson may end up at OT at some point in the future, but he was not going to see reps behind CiCi and Markel. He manned up, slid inside (pause) and gained valuable playing time.

I wrote all of that as a back drop for Congdon and the guard commentary. In time, I think Congdon will be a stud. Great size (pause), family, seems to have his head screwed on correctly, etc. However, last I heard, he was up to 330 after being listed at 285 on his recruiting profile. It will take him some time to learn how to play with that new size (pause) AND how to play at this level. I hope he redshirts and follows the Samson plan, not necessarily shifting inside to Guard, but being flexible enough to play multiple positions. OGs are getting more and more athletic and seem to be tracking more into the old leaner OT frames we used to see and less in the Navaughn Donaldson slop mold.

Now that you've suffered through two paragraphs of nonsense, the answer is simple - you take Mark Mathews no matter what. Dude is somewhere between Cantwell and CiCi and Lord knows, you never pass up dudes like that. If one of Cantwell, Congdon, Ervin, or Mathews ends up at guard, so be it.

I generally agree with what you wrote but there is one key nfl/college difference. Players are "cheap" for their first 4-5 years in the nfl. I could see a team with a top tier tackle on roster drafting another one.
