Hypothetically speaking if both of these guys play absolutely amazing year one lets say freshman AA level at left tackle and right tackle does the need for Matthew's decrease? Let's say they both are starters. I think they both are coming in ready to play and I think we're going to be absolutely amazed at how great they play.

It’s a fair question, that people won’t want to consider, because of NIL allocation.
Let’s say hypothetically they both start at the money positions on the OL, Tackle, as freshmen. If they are actually that good then it means UM will need to pay a lot of NIL money at that position, and likely won’t be able to allocate to Matthews what he will definitely receive from another school. NIL has to be considered like a salary cap league. No NFL team is paying top dollar for 2 offensive tackles and then drafting another in the 1st round and paying that amount of money to 3 players when only 2 are on the field.

But there are lots of hypotheticals floating around here with the biggest being that Cantwell and Cogdon both start as true freshmen. But if that happens, I think your question is extremely valid. Of course the “move one to guard” or “it’s not my money” arguments will be made almost immediately. But players like Cantwell and Matthews are not moving to guard. They know how much an NFL tackle makes compared to a guard and its very, very different money. And Cogdon sure doesn’t look like a guard to me at 6”7” or whatever he is.

Nah you do everything to secure Matthew’s man. That dude has too 5 pick written all over him and he’s the future LT. I’m sure they are telling him that’s spot is his and obviously he has to earn it. But that spot is open for him.

Also I don’t think matthews is a day1 starter so realistically he would probably be waiting a year? Probably rotate in some before he’s an official starter
