Can't let players pick a coach...

I know the players wanted continuity with Coker, but does anybody really think a new coach could have prevented that 2001 team from winning the NC?

That team was so loaded with talent and Ed Reed's leadership, it masked the fact that Coker was bringing nothing to the table.

IMO the decision to keep him is what cost us that 2nd NC. If we had any decent coach, that game against OSU wouldn't have been close.

I also find it interesting that the PI call was on Sharpe, who was Coker's player (in his first true class) . I know it was bad call, but if the coverage was cleaner, it would have been harder for the ref to call that. You could already see the cracks in the foundation with Coker's player evals.

I just kinda mentioned this in the Donna/Barry Alvarez thread and agree. I doubt the players would have followed through with any threats as it seems like not everyone was in favor of bringing Erickson in prior and that turned out okay. Had we gone a different route back then instead of Clappy it's pretty probable we'd be in different spot today. Kinda feel like the choice in the new president is one of those moments or at least maybe a last chance.

coker started the downfall. Butch would have kept winning, those kid respected him. I remember when i didnt like Coker as a OC and was surprised he got it.

I agree with everything, but insinuating it was Larry Coker's "fault" that flag was thrown is a little ridiculous. Someone said it best in an earlier thread when they said we should've hired Barry Alvarez when Donna wanted to. Had he been our coach, we still get that 2001 championship; more than likely we repeat in 2002; and regardless of what happened afterwards, we're in no worse shape now than we are currently in. I feel like we're actually better off had the Coker hire never happened.

I'm just saying that Glen Sharpe wasn't a good player; who was a Coker recruit. The coverage could have been better. To me he shouldn't have been on the field.

Well if it makes you feel any better Glenn Sharpe is currently in jail on a murder charge, so there's that.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that at all. I just meant that the flag wasn't anyone associated with Miami's fault. Not Butch's, not Coker's, not Sharpe's. MAYBE Golden's.

Receivers in the program said at the time that Sharpe was actually a really tough player to go against, and on the play in question he had great coverage.

He got hurt like three years in a row, so by the time he wrapped his career he was a shell of what he used to be. But make no mistake, before that he was every bit of a Miami-caliber corner and as tough as you expect someone from Carol City to be.

OP is **** skippy...there have to be adults in the room. I understand the position that the seniors put Paul Dee in when they lobbied for Coker, but Paul Dee was paid to make tough decisions and plan for the long term. The fall of this program began the day Coker was hired.

All these coaches seem great in hindsight, but the attitude that Coker let infect the program still hasn't really been scrubbed off.

I don’t question his toughness, but you need more than that to be a good player.

That decision by Dee was the start of the demise of this program. A great hire would have kept this train rolling on

this. my friend says the same thing no matter how much success the 01 team had. u cant let the players decide the fate of ur program if ur Paul Dee. u call their bluff to be honest bc a good hire then would have us in a better position than were in now. Romberg even said it on the radio that Coker didnt coach a single play at Miami while he was there. he said they just wanted someone who would let em do w.e. the **** they wanted to do bc they had this in the bag. same was said in the fox sports article posted a while back concerning the events surrounding those teams.

LULZ at this dude trying to link the recruiting of Glenn Sharpe to the downfall of the program. Before he got hurt a dozen times he was a phenomenal prospect who anyone in the country would have been happy to sign. And he did nothing wrong on the criminal Porter heist play.

Makes me think back to Jan of 2002. Just got back from the game and was on the boards reading up on everything and someone posted that Coker was throwing up in the locker room before the Natl Chmp game and Portis put his arm around Coker and said don't worry about it we got this. As soon as I read that I knew we were in trouble. If Butch had stayed, Miami had enough talent to at least get thru the 2003 season and play for a 3rd straight title game.

Also found it funny that Coker admitted to asking Reed what he should say in the locker room at halftime up 30-0 on Penn State

Not trying to link anything...pretty obvious to me. Did the program not start to decline with Coker? How many hyped kids he recruited ended up doing anything? Ryan Moore, Greg Threat, Eric Moncur, Kyle Wright, Lance Leggett., Willie Williams...

He defended that WR awkward man. He made it look like his arms were wrapped around him. Still wasn't a flag, but if Butch was there I can't say he wouldn't have taken him, but I don't think he's on the field.

Didn't players want some other than JJ too? It is dangerous to let player pick, but clearly it is also dangerous to let administration pick too( Remember Butch was the only one who would take the job.)

if we had a competent admin, we wouldn't have this issue of picking terrible coaches but when constantly picking from the assistant pool/midmajor pool) ur gonna hit and miss. UF missed on the last few assistants they hired (machen hired urban not really foley). it happens. my choice for the next HC should be one that has had real success though. cant afford to miss on another hire now.
