Canes Weekly: Should the Canes “worry” about App St??

You have to respect this team, 11-1 last year

Respect? absolutely! Worry or fear? Nah Big Dawg…nah! We're a better team top to bottom. I have faith in our coaches and our talent. Everybody take a deep breath, and scrub the Goldilocks off! LOL

Do we need to be on top of our game because we're playing a road game against a scrappy team in front of the biggest crowd in school history? Sure. Is this a "trap" game? Don't see how that description fits.

We're coming off of playing 2 overmatched opponents at home and have a bye week after. This isn't a situation where we played a tough opponent last week and play a tough opponent next week. This is our most difficult game so far, against a team with a reputation as a "giant killer" (even though it was one time 9 years ago against an overrated Michigan team) and a team that should have won at Tennessee a couple weeks ago.

With a real coaching staff and a veteran QB, the risk of this game is taking a young defense on the road in a hostile environment. I'm not worried about us not being focused or ready. Considering that many of these guys, other than our LBs and a handful of other starting players, have played at FSU, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, etc., we shouldn't be intimidated by a crowd of 35k.

After two dominating performances against FAMU (70-3) & FAU (38-10) , the #25 Miami Hurricanes will travel to Boone, North Carolina this week to take on the (1-1) Appalachian State Mountaineers. The Hurricanes are currently favored by 3.5 points this week according to Vegas Insider, and many experts are calling this game a “Trap Game,” but do the Hurricanes need to worry about a team that is (0-4) against ranked teams, since they shocked the world and defeated #5 Michigan in 2007?

Miami head coach Mark Richt thinks differently.

“How can you take this team lightly?” Richt said “How can anybody who knows football take this team lightly? We don’t even have to say that to our guys. They’ve seen the film. They watched them play against Tennessee. They know.

“It’s really almost an insult to have to answer the question. Not being rude to you, but this is a really good football team and everybody knows it and we’re geared up to try to do the best we can to play great that day,” said Richt.

Saturday’s noon kickoff will be the first road game of the season for the Hurricanes and Mark Richt’s first test as the head coach for his alma mater. Many expected the offense to carry the way for this team, but it’s been Defensive Coordinator, Manny Diaz, and his defense who have step-up and lead this team to their impressive 2-0 start.

The Hurricanes’ defense is allowing 205 yards per game this season, and while the Canes have faced two “cupcake” teams, their performance is still very impressive. The Canes are starting three freshmen LB’s in Shaq Quarterman, Zach McCloud and Mike Pinckney, who was the defensive player of the week; with 9 total tackles, 6 solo tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Canes’ defense also ranks #1 in tackles for loss in the entire country with 22.

This week’s opponent Appalachian State won’t be a “cupcake.” This is a App St. team who almost beat #9 Tennessee on the road, and honestly it was a gift from God when Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs dove into the endzone, fumbled the football and somehow Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd ended up with the football and gives Tennessee a 20-13 lead.

The Canes will be playing in front of a sold-out Appalachian State crowd and some are calling this their biggest home game in school history, this game is so crazy that once tickets were released, they sold-out in less than one hour.

Predictions: Many App St. fans are saying they will beat the Hurricanes this weekly and it’s honestly very disrespectful. I think Brad Kaaya leads Miami into Appalachian State and shows everyone why he’s projected to be a first round draft pick and a Heisman contender.

Score: Miami 48 Appalachian State 14

Since when did supporting your team become disrespectful? Quite frankly, I find it interesting that you mention that Tennessee was lucky to win, yet basically say it is a stretch for App to beat Miami, who arguably is not better than Tennessee.

App rolls. 35-13

...App rolls. 35-13

That is a bold statement...moxie if you will.

ESPN programmers notwithstanding (they are clearly expecting Miami scare or loss), with these Hurricane athletes and Richt's staff to lead them...

I don't see how App St scheme or athletes match up snap-for-snap through all 4Qs.

When Miami pulls away, Mountaineers arent built to catch up.

Miami executes...Miami rolls to W...close, so-so, or blow out...Canes arrive Boone 2-0...exit 3-0...

Knew it. This 'billy's been drinking too much of that methanol contaminated shine.

If the Line is 3.5... Yes those guys are always on top of it., so yes, I'm worried.
I know Talent isn't a question, but they have shown they can hang around and beat you if your not playing good

Getting taunted by App State fans

I have seen it all

App St will likely try to control pace by using most of the play clock early-mid game.

X factor for their team is what happens when they start to trail Miami? Through x2 contests, you've shown shaken faith in your kicking game, so you will take TD tries more often than you normally. The App DL, who played lights out against a misfiring Tenn O, averages 255ish...Miami's fullback weights 280ish. Not a good match up with him running downhill, let alone an OL that has shown at least some signs of life in the run game.

Your RB Cox could play scholly ball on any D1P5 team no doubt...LB Law is probably a safety (and very good) on a D1P5 squad...

everything has to go right for App, everything +1 has to go wrong for Miami to stay at Boone with a W...and even then id say only 5/10 contests.

Too many advantages for Miami...they leave Boonetropolis 3-0...ruin ESPN's chances to gloat...

Been doing a lot of research on the spread because I'm debating putting my entire bank account on this game. I honestly believe this is an example of Vegas using psychology to their advantage. People are just going to overthink this because everyone has seen that they beat Michigan, almost beat UT, and this game is at their place.

Trying to make people say, "oh Vegas is always close, they know what's going to happen"

No, they know how people will bet when they set the line like that. They make you second guess taking Miami, avoid them, then cash out on everyone taking App State. Playing games with the betters.

No fear...and if what I just heard is true, that Appy State's coach said our d-line is thin and that Kaaya doesn't like to be hit, then they better fear after giving us that locker room fodder. Can't wait to watch our 280 pound fullback hit one of their 240 pound d-lineman. We'll see who's thin real fast.
