Canes Spring Practice Report: April 4

I think heatherman manufactures pressures very well but nothing can replace how mesi and bain can straight up win on their own for 4 quarters, that level of physicality, technique, mentality, motor is planted, watered and grown for years then you get the final product

So we have talented guys but there will be a drop off, it reminds me of people saying no drop off on offense from cam and those weapons to beck and the replacements. Like yea we will have good moments but we shouldn’t expect the same level of dominance, that was a rare superpower for a college team
Screenshot it, Lightfoot will be an 1st team all acc MINIMUM this season.

I think we all knew OL would’ve a bit of a struggle to start. But they’ll figure it out.
plus let’s be honest, this DL could be one of the best in the country. Absolute freak shows on the two deep even though it’s impossible to replace 3 and 4

OL is going to be in games knowing how easy it is compared to practice like the good old days

Some believe Lightfoot can play 3 downs right now. I have to see a 230 lbs DE doing it because I don't believe it. Maybe he can set the edge against someone outweighing him by almost 100 lbs. Chase and Wiley outweigh him by 10-15 lbs. We shall see.

A healthy damari for me is the best in that room. At the very least he's on the same page as oj & Lucas. That's being generous to them. Damari being healthy makes this secondary ELITE and allows the line time to develope.
What exactly is/was Damari's injury?

You trippin. Jakobe thomas was our glue. That's not taking anything away from the other three. But bryce proved he can fill the position worst case and we recruit at a high level on Edge and oline. Safety we gonna have to see. Thornton looks like he's gonna take nickel more than likely. No clue who's gonna play strong cause potser definitely can't and neither can bryce. Don't think Thornton has the range for it.
This is extremely interesting to me because I know that you know what you're talking about. I have always seen Thornton as the Strong Safety type more in the Jakobe Thomas mold that in the Keionte Scott mold. It's going to be fascinating to see how the safety and Nickel positions shake out by the time we fly out to Palo Alto. Do you put Bryce Fitzgerald at Free Safety to better take advantage of his elite ball hawking skills or do you put him at Nickel to take advantage of his versatility? In the event of the latter I thought it would be a no brainer for Poyser to move to Free while having Thornton at Strong. JJ Dunnigan is the wild card here and depending on how far along he is, he could change everything. Dunnigan could likely play either Safety position or Nickel.

There isn’t really a question in my mind if Lightfoot can play 3downs imo. The question really would be in what role is he playing 3 downs vs how we want to run our scheme… if he was always lined up at 9 tech that like always maintained outside gap integrity every down, then why would anyone really question that… so it’s about how Heatherman chooses to use him that would make you wonder if he plays 3 downs…

For instance we could run much more hybrid 34 this year with Lightfoot and Damon Wilson on opposite ends (well technically 34 OLBs) and having Scott-Moten-Blount as the 3 interior players. And we can move to more of a 43 when Lowe is in…

Last year with Mesidor and Bain we were clearly a 43 DLine… but today, I feel with Lightfoot and Damon Wilson you can absolutely say we are a 34 team more. Like Lowe seems the most pure 43 DE on the roster.

Like in a 43 setup Lowe and Damon Wilson is probably the closest to Bain+Mesidor. Blount imo should be SDE but he’s much more of a hybrid DT/DE than Bain was…
